What is a Southern Colonial style house? Deep Porches Why do so many Southern Colonial style homes offer gracious front porches tucked in beneath deep overhangs? Because such open-air rooms help family and friends endure the warm air that comes with living in the South. Porches keep houses cooler by shading the structures’ walls. Porches also provide a comfortable place for people to sit and visit—a welcome social nicety. Elevated Foundations Whether built of brick or stone, elevated foundations provide both utilitarian and aesthetic benefits to Southern homes. Building a house several feet above the ground helps protect it against water or insect damage. Plus, an elevated foundation enhances a home’s curb appeal by putting the whole structure on a pedestal. Building a house on stilts (often seen in coastal areas) offers an additional benefit. When all or part of a house rests upon stilts, breezes pass underneath that help cool rooms. Classic Architectural Features Symmetrical forms. Graceful proportions. Stately white columns. Triangular gables. Designers of pre-Civil War homes included such architectural details because of America’s passion for Neoclassical, Greek Revival, Federal, and Georgian-style and Southern Colonial home architecture in the early part of the 19th century. Today, such details give new houses an elegant sense of refinement that calls to mind the genteel lifestyles of the past. Want to see more like this? This Colonial-style home exhibits a soothing visual symmetry could make your heart skip a beat. The classic door and window trim, takes you back to the days of Colonial America, yet this traditional design has a modern edge to it. The exterior wall siding and the colonial fence ornaments the house. The color scheme is kept to grey and white. There is something about the scale of the rooms and the way light comes into the house. The house just exudes charm. A mix of Industrial and Vintage elements are seen throughout. Large floor to ceiling French windows on two walls make the drawing room a sun-warmed space to relax in. The living room adorned with brown velvet sofa, vintage tv cabinets with antique handles. A metallic partition in leaf design painted in white catches the eye. Customized room divider wooden shelf is multipurpose. The burnt wooden texture floor preserves the home's original character. The kitchen's highlight includes huge brass faucet, retro backsplash and handles for the cabinet drawers, kitchen cabinet trim. The wide black pendant lights over the dining table, the vintage wall lamps and the old sewing machine stand converted into wash basin counter gives an industrial touch. The contrast is easily pulled off as its peppered throughout the home rather than concentrated only in one room. The pine wood stairs and the vintage wallpaper are perfect to take us back to the era. All things put together certainly brings a warmth to this home.

The most defining characteristic of a Dutch Colonial house is it’s gambrel roof with flaring eaves that extend over the long sides. The same style associated with barns. The most popular style that is commonly seen today is from the early 20th century and are referred to as Dutch Colonial Revival. The biggest advantage of a Dutch Colonial home is the amount of space you get with less material and the ability to easily add to the home without disturbing the original design style. A porch under overhang eaves, a gable end chimney, and 8 over 8 windows are also popular design elements of a Dutch Colonial style home. Dutch Colonial remains a featured style of architecture in many US cities to this day.

What Is the Difference Between Colonial and Traditional Home Styles? The difference between Colonial and traditional home styles is quite simple; Colonial refers to a specific type of style, while traditional is a broader term encompassing many styles, including Colonial. Colonial architecture and interior decorating are inspired by the architecture and decor of the Colonial era in America, which spanned roughly around 300 years, ending in the early- to mid-1800s. The numerous home styles that fall under a traditional label have timeless designs with historical roots, leaving out only the most modern and contemporary styles that emerged in the mid- to late-20th century. Characteristics of Colonial Architecture Colonial homes are symmetrical, with a centered front door and an equal number of windows on each side. A typical number of windows showing on the front of the home is nine: two on each side of the door, two windows directly above the first story windows on the second story, and one directly above the door. Homes have a central chimney or one on each end of the house. Inside the home, a central stairway leads to upper bedrooms branching off from a central hallway. These characteristics are typical of New England Colonial homes. Variations developed in different regions of the country, according to the dominant culture in the area, such as Spanish Colonial, Dutch Colonial and French Colonial. Other Colonial Sub-Styles Colonial architecture and decorating also varies by time periods. Styles changed during this 300-year-long era. Colonial style starts with the First Period or Post-Medieval English, from 1600 to 1700. Next came Georgian, from 1700 to 1780; followed by Federal, which ranged from 1780 to 1820; and Greek Revival, from 1825 to 1860. Symmetry was a common element in all these styles except early First Period homes, which had asymmetrical doors and window openings. Georgian architecture, named for the succession of English kings named George, was influenced by the European concept of gentility. Federal style also drew inspiration from European trends in the work of architect Robert Adam especially. Greek Revival architecture focused on Grecian doorway moldings and window frames and columns supporting porch roofs. Traditional European Styles Traditional European home styles draw inspiration from different countries, regions and time periods in Europe. Mediterranean style has influences from several countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea including Spain, France and Italy. French styles range from formal to casual, with the elegant furniture of kings Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI, Baroque and Regency styles and the ever-popular French Country. Tuscan and Spanish Colonial or Hacienda styles are also closely related to Mediterranean style, but they are more specifically focused on designs influenced from those specific European regions. English styles such as Tudor and English Cottage are commonly seen in upscale suburbs and quaint country homes. Historical Victorian-style homes feature many Gothic European influences blended with cottage-style elements resulting in unique and detailed architectural features. Traditional American Styles Although styles such as Ranch and Craftsmen seem to embody the all-American lifestyle and can be found scattered throughout the heartland of America, you will still find European influences in this and practically any other style. Country-style homes include sub-styles such as Cottage, Farmhouse, and Log or Lodge style homes. New American, another suburban home style suitable for large properties, borrows many traditional Colonial elements but features largely asymmetrical facades and complex roof lines with multiple gables in varying heights, similar to Victorian-style homes. sources : http://homeguides.sfgate.com/difference-between-colonial-traditional-home-styles-102307.html http://photos.hgtv.com/rooms/viewer/outdoor-space/colonial

What Is a Colonial House? The Colonial home is one of the most popular styles of home in the United States, according to "Better Homes and Gardens." The Colonial style evolved from European influences, which started in the 1600s. Many colonists emigrated from Europe and brought those influences with them. Over time the Colonial style became distinct, recognizable for its use of geometry, and different regions of the United States added their own tweaks to provide relief from the climate. History Colonial houses developed out of the US Colonial period in the 1700s. Colonists settled primarily along the Eastern Seaboard and built homes that became the Colonial style. They started as two-story homes that feature one room on each floor and eventually grew into the stately, four-over-four, two-story homes most associated with the Colonial style. Four-over-four alludes to the style of four rooms on each floor of the home. Characteristics Regardless of the size of the home, Colonial-style homes share several characteristics, according to Architecture for Kids. First, the homes are symmetrical, or square, and feature an entry door that can be found in the middle of the front of the home. The style also features two windows on either side of the entry door, with five windows on the second floor, with one directly above the entry door. Other characteristics include paired chimneys, a medium pitched roof to provide drainage in rainy weather and a stairway that is directly behind the entry door and leads to a hallway that bisects the middle of the second floor. Influences The Colonial style can trace its influences to England, from which most of the US Colonists emigrated. When London burned in 1666, several architects helped influence the city’s reconstruction. Andrea Palladio, an Italian architect popular during the Renaissance, influenced British architects like Christopher Wren, James Gibbs and Robert Adam, who helped rebuild London in the 1680s. Their architecture was based partly on Roman and Greek ruins, according to Antique Home. Those influences can be seen in the geometric proportion of Colonial homes and certain accents, such as Greek-style columns on the front. With the work of these architects popular in the 1700s, their work filtered to the Colonies and influenced the work of home builders in what became the United States. Regions Colonial architecture flourished in two main US regions: New England and in the Southern US. They are designated as New England Colonial and Southern Colonial. As the architecture evolved, the two styles took on distinct differences. In the South, ceilings were built higher in order to provide ventilation during the summer months. In New England, the majority of colonial homes were built with wood siding, as the material was easy to come by. Colonial homes in Virginia, which is considered part of the New England family, were built primarily of brick because clay was plentiful. The style can be found as far west as Ohio and Illinois. Additions As Colonial architecture evolved in the United States, architects and homeowners sought to put their own stamp on the style. These accessories include such items as brass door knockers, cut-glass doorknobs and gilt indoor mirrors. The use of shutters on the front windows also evolved out of the Colonial style. Other Colonial Styles Several other types of Colonial homes have evolved from the original style. The French adopted the style as they built homes in what became Louisiana. These homes have steep roofs, elevated brick foundations and wide porches. Spanish Colonial homes evolved during the time of the Spanish Empire in Florida and the US Southwest. These homes were differentiated by their materials, which were usually adobe and stone to help keep homes cool. sources http://homeguides.sfgate.com/colonial-house-6909.html http://photos.hgtv.com/rooms/viewer/outdoor-space/colonial

One of the things Younger likes about her home is how well it functions for her and her son. “I really think about the space and how I want it to function, and then I set out to find things,” she says. “I typically pool together lots of options before paring things down. Then I make sure my final selects tell a complete story.”

The French Colonial style of architecture has a long and rich history with the first buildings being created in the early 1600’s and it was one of the first architectural styles used when building homes during the colonial period in the United States. Due to their popularity in the once French controlled portion of the south a French Colonial home is sometimes referred to as a cajun cottage. This style is heavily influenced by its geographic location and often designed to remain cool in a warm climate. Common aspects of a french colonial style home are: Tall second story windows A steep, hipped roof Arched doorways Raised basement And iron balconies A french colonial home is a beautiful and historic style that is highly sought after in many US cities.
