Alaska's Epic Northern Lights
During one of our tours last season, the best Auroras we've ever experienced played out across the night sky just as the setting sun was settling into bed on February 18th. This clip is one small glimpse at the show we witnessed that night.

Northern Lights From 100,000 ft!
In April 2012, I was part of a team of scientists, teachers and students who travelled to Alaska to observe the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. Our mission was a unique one - to launch weather balloons up to 100,000 feet loaded with experiments, tracking devices and HD cameras. This is the result of our trip, produced for Catalyst on ABC1 http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/

The most common color displayed is a brilliant yellow-green, but the aurora borealis can also produce red, blue and purple patterns. An aurora, sometimes referred to as a polar lights or northern lights, is a natural light display in the sky, predominantly seen in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions. Auroras are produced when the magnetosphere is sufficiently disturbed by the solar wind that the trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and magnetospheric plasma, mainly in the form of electrons and protons, precipitate them into the upper atmosphere (thermosphere/exosphere), where their energy is lost. The resulting ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents emits light of varying color and complexity. What Causes The Northern Lights?
There are many misconceptions about what causes the Aurora Borealis when it really requires solar winds, magnetic fields and excited atmospheric gases. Learn more at HowStuffWorks.com: http://science.howstuffworks.com/nature/climate-weather/atmospheric/question471.htm Share on Facebook: http://goo.gl/FMuiBa Share on Twitter: http://goo.gl/TR4YyU Subscribe: http://goo.gl/ZYI7Gt Visit our site: http://www.brainstuffshow.com The Northern Lights are beautiful and odd and have understandably inspired many myths. The Vikings thought they were a bridge between our world and Asgard where Thor and the other gods live. In another Norse myth, they are the light reflected of the armor of the Valkyries. And people in Finland thought it was the archangel Michael (John Travolta) battling Beelzebub (the devil). Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. All wrong. It was the famous early astronomer and recanter of science, Galileo Galilei, who gave the Northern lights the name Aurora Borealis, which means “dawn of the North” in Latin. But it wasn’t until Norwegian scientist Christian Birkeland figured it out in 1896 that the true origin of the auroras was understood. In the center of the Earth, the molten iron core generates magnetic fields that extend through the crust and into space around the planet, creating what’s called Earth’s magnetosphere. It’s a pretty great thing that Earth has it, because the magnetosphere protects us from all manner of charged particles spit out from the Sun. The Sun is so hot that it produces plasma (a fourth state of matter) where positively charged atoms (ions) and negatively charge electrons flow freely around one another. These highly charged particles have enough energy to escape the Sun’s gravity and fly out into space, barreling toward Earth at 1 million miles per hour like a shotgun blast of solar hate. This is called solar wind. When they encounter our magnetosphere, most of these ions and electrons bounce harmlessly off and Earth is saved. But some of these particles make it through the magnetosphere where it’s weakest (at the north and south poles), and when they do the light show begins. The electrons that make it into our atmosphere interact with some of the elements there, particularly oxygen and nitrogen. The electrons transfer energy to them, exciting them in the process. To calm down, the excited atoms must release some energy, which they do as tiny packets of light called photons -- beautiful, beautiful photons. Depending on where in the atmosphere the electrons interact with these other atoms, different colors are produced. Oxygen emits a yellow-green color up to about 150 miles in the atmosphere. After that, it turns red. Nitrogen emits a nice blue color about 60 miles up. And don’t forget these colors can blend, which can create glowing pinks, purples and whites. It’s like Miami Beach up there. This interplay is most vibrant during solar storms, which depend somewhat on the Sun’s solar cycle. And, although these lights can be produced at all hours, they aren’t visible during the day, since the sunlight outshines them. Fairbanks Alaska: My Solo Weekend Adventure ~ Chena Hot Springs, Northern Lights, Fairbanks Tour
Check out my weekend trip to Fairbanks! It was a busy weekend all by myself. Not much time to eat or sleep. In fact, I had 13 hours between Thursday morning (due to work and packing before the trip plus the early flight!) and Monday! The trip was totally worth it! I went to Chena Hot Springs, the North Pole including sitting in Santa's chair, the largest ice museum in the world (Aurora Ice Museum), I saw the Northern Lights, went ice fishing and dog sledding. I experienced so much of the area and enjoyed my time SO much! I can't wait to go back later this year! (Real time) Amazing Northern Lights! Fairbanks, Alaska (Sony A7s testing)
A beautiful aurora made its way through the interior of Alaska last night, catching us a bit off guard! luckily I had my camera with me and was able to shoot this on a turn off on my way home from Denali! low Kp and full moon is normally less than ideal, but its the north so expect the unexpected! Enjoy!! All shots are with a Sony A7s plus Rokinon T1.5 24mm with shutter speeds ranging from 1/4th to 1/20th and iso 20-100k! Also, it was a VERY windy and 12 minutes of loud wind was a little much.. so I needed to add some stock music! If you don't like it, mute it! :D

Aurora Borealis / Northern Lights in Alaska (Timelapse)
Timelapse video compilation of the aurora borealis (northern lights) taken in Fairbanks, Alaska, during the evenings of March 21-22, 2012. 1,705 still frames were captured using a tripod-mounted Canon 5D Mark II and two lenses: EF 16-35mm/2.8L USM and EF 14mm/2.8L II USM. On March 21, the aurora was faint: we were only able to see it by naked eye for half an hour or less during the evening. On March 22, the aurora was searingly bright, and lasted for over 2.5 hours, spanning most of the night sky (leaving only a dark hole to the south). We shot for hours each night in temperatures ranging from -5ºF to -20ºF. The 5D2 was a champ, and I was able to shoot around 600 pictures on a single battery charge, even in those temperatures! The Canon TC-80N timelapse remote also worked well, although the settings LCDs on both devices became very slow in the cold, sometimes taking a full second to refresh when I changed settings. The still images were processed and exported in Lightroom 4. Individual clips were assembled in Quicktime 7 and then brought into Final Cut Pro X for editing into a sequence. Special thanks to Julian and Ildi Cohen (http://juliancohen.com), my photography companions during the trip, to Casey Thompson, a local aurora photographer (http://caseythompsonphotography.com/), for his tips on shooting locations, and to mobygratis.com for music.

The Northern Lights | Anchorage, Alaska
Despite all the light pollution in the city of Anchorage. There're still many places here that are great for viewing the Northern lights. We spent a few hours in two location gathering these footage. I really wanted a longer time lapse, but the northern lights only lasted for such a short period of time. So until next time... Enjoy, Share & Subscribe. Northern Lights in Fairbanks, Alaska 9 October 2018 - shot on Sony a7rii ISO 10000
The Aurora Borealis was clearly visible tonight in Fairbanks, Alaska. I headed up to the very popular Murphy Dome to catch some of the action close to midnight. The light show was amazing and this video does not do it justice. One main reason - I am *not* a video guy, I am a photography guy! I will need to learn a bit more about my camera to shoot this better next time. Hope you enjoy!

Explore Fairbanks, Alaska During Aurora Season | August 21 - April 21
Fairbanks’ location is ideal for northern lights viewing because it is under the “Auroral Oval,” a ring-shaped zone over the far north where aurora activity is concentrated. Additionally, Fairbanks’ low precipitation and distance from coastal areas contribute to consistently clear nights. All combined these variables make the Fairbanks region an outstanding destination for possible aurora borealis viewing.

Aurora Borealis Northern Lights Fairbanks Alaska 11 December 2017 4K Time Lapse
Fairbanks was experiencing an Aurora draught when I arrived. So I checked the clouds and KP reading (only up to 3 in the following nights). Decided to plan for a trip out of town on the on the 3rd night. Unexpectedly she appeared and it was spectacular! No words could describe the magnificence of the dancing pale green lights illuminating the entire sky seen by the naked eye in Fairbanks Alaska on the night of 11 December 2017. Extremely happy! Top item on my bucket list ticked. Alaska Trip: Northern Lights & More | Coldfoot Adventure (Part 2)
Join us in appreciating the beauty of Alaska, specifically the Coldfoot Camp! This oasis in the middle of nowhere has so much to offer (aside from giving us the perfect honeymoon!). Among the things we enjoyed were dog sledding, Aurora viewing, and that gigantic pancake! Coldfoot Camp and the nearby Wiseman Village are definitely among the places to visit in Alaska. It's so beautiful we can't wait to go back. *All Aurora Borealis pictures were taken by the friend we made in Coldfoot, Quo Ging (Mark). Thank you, Mark! The Aurora Borealis, Fairbanks Alaska, March 2016
I've been fortunate the past 6 months to have traveled twice to the arctic (previously to Norway in September '15) to witness the aurora borealis amongst the most pristine skies and surroundings. At a latitude of 65 degrees north Fairbanks sits directly under the aurora belt, making it possible to see the aurora on most clear nights. On the night of my arrival (March 6th), not only were the skies clear but a 'small' coronal hole (and potentially a stealth CME) directly faced our planet and produced a G3/Kp6+ storm. The aurora danced across the skies in all its formations and array of colours putting on quite a show... Greens, purples and reds were all visible with naked eye. I photographed somewhere in the vicinity of 2000+ photos during my stay at Fairbanks. This timelapse is a handful of what I consider to be the most memorable moments during those cold but beautiful nights :). Notes: Most of the photographs were taken in and around the 'Mountain Aurora Lodge', a fantastic lodge I'd recommend if you're looking for that homey Alaskan feel :) . P.S: You can see my Norway, Tromso timelapse of the northern lights here https://youtu.be/hhR7xEk2BJY Majority of photos taken with my Canon 6D and Sigma 'ART' Series [email protected] lens.
