Lost at sea: Ecological assessment around a sunken shipping container
Thousands of shipping containers are lost from cargo vessels each year. Many of these containers eventually sink to the deep seafloor. In 2004, researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) discovered a lost shipping container almost 1,300 meters (4,200 feet) below the surface of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. In the first ever survey of its kind, researchers from MBARI and the Sanctuary recently described how deep-sea animal communities on and around the container differed from those in surrounding areas. The red dots seen in some of the underwater footage are lasers mounted on the remotely operated submersible. The lasers are 29 cm apart and allow the scientists to estimate animal size. VA - Deep Sea Shipping
VA Mix Music Ambient Electronica Downtempo Experiments Sounds Albums Oid Systems of Mercy Lagunamuch Community Unit 21 November VA Deep Sea Shipping Lagunamuch Community From Russia with love. Anyone who thinks the country doesn't have a thriving electronic music community need only hear these three Lagunamuch Community releases to be otherwise enlightened. Founded in 2004 in Moscow , the label issues high-quality ambient and experimental electronic music and the three recordings on trial here are a solid representation 0id (Alexandroid member Andrey Antonets) shows himself to be a masterful industrial-ambient sculptor on Systems of Mercy's seven haunted evocations. Though the recording presents them as separate pieces, they flow into one another, turning Systems of Mercy into a single, forty-five minute tapestry of varying moods and sounds. Much of the album might be classified as abstract moodscaping with an occasional foray into orchestral ambient ("Cymbidium"), beat-based melodicism ("Rosa"); "Iris" weaves bell strikes, ripples, and highwire drones into a compelling moodscape while the longest piece, the eleven-minute "Chrysanthemum" methodically transforms piano playing into an indecipherable mass of rippling blur. The duet of computer-generated voices in "Gossypium" sounds silly at first but the song's affecting melodic qualities overcomes that initial resistance, and when electronic beats eventually emerge, the song ventures into Nobukazu Takemura's orbit. That the closer "Calla"—a pulsating coda of distorted vocal treatments and church organ melancholia—resists easy definition, is no bad thing either An album permeated by themes of seclusion and remembrance, November offers a compelling portrait of Unit 21's (Stanislav Vdovin) deep, ambient style. Imagine the ancient crackle of Philip Jeck's decayed vinyl exponentially multiplied until the crackle becomes a smothering howl and you're in the vicinity of Unit 21's sound. The droning tones in "Baltic Morrow" might originate from planes but it's nearly impossible to determine when they're buried under a mountain of static and noise. Likewise, the title of "Longway Railpull" suggests trains as the source but again it's hard to tell when the sound is an amorphous roar. Don't mistake that for a criticism, by the way; Unit 21's music is hypnotic and engrossing, and remains so throughout the latter piece's fourteen-minute duration. Like Jeck, Vdovin builds mood through repetition; loops cycle endlessly while the surrounding mass slowly intensifies in density and volume. "Flesh" surges like a lumbering beast that ever-so-slowly consumes the track's initial sounds and replaces them with a shimmering wall of tonal slivers. Vdovin's music sometimes calls to mind other electronic pioneers: shuffling rustles in "Get Home" and the oceanic smear of "Snow on Your Bed" suggest a kinship with the Vladislav Delay of Entain and Multila, and the merging of coagulated textures and minimal techno clicks makes "To the Temptress" approximate a Chain Reaction-Pole hybrid. The hint of other artists' voices in November doesn't render it any less effective for sounding at times 'communal' instead of wholly unique. Not surprisingly, 0id and Unit21 re-appear on the label's first compilation Deep Sea Shipping but they're joined by a dozen others, making this an appealing overview of Lagunamuch's offerings. The material's deeply submersive in character—purposefully so, as the title is a term taken from maritime logistics and navigation. Conceptually bound by an aquatic theme and inspired by a passage by H.P. Lovecraft, the fifteen pieces are assembled into a seamless, hour-long travelogue one experiences as an aural analogue to an episodic science fiction novel by Jules Verne or H.G. Wells. Much of the material animatedly pushes forward through murky depths, as the submarine's crew members nervously survey the humongous alien forms that howl and groan beyond the ship's portals. Selffish's (Andrey Eigus) gracefully gliding title piece suggests a propulsive digi-dub- Phaedra amalgam that finds a kindred spirit in "Radio X-Range," Unbound Persistence's beautifully atmospheric, echo-drenched dub-house, while Oloolo's blistering 'storm track' "Nano Snoi" is leavened by the hazy calm of Sever's (Vladmir Leibgam) "Waterproof." Broken beats determinedly pierce the ultra-dense haze in Riverz End's "The Flight Day" and Batiskaf's "A Shifting Reef"; ambient soundscaping, on the other hand, characterizes Kriipis Tulo's "Frozen Morning"and Father?'s (Alexandroid's Alexander Matrosov) "Underwater Government." Underscoring Deep Sea Shipping is an imaginative concept that establishes collective unity while also accommodating stylistic diversityMay 2007 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_music http://www.last.fm/tag/electronic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambient_music http://www.lastfm.de/tag/ambient http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtempo http://www.lastfm.de/tag/downtempo

Tragic day for shipping in Black Sea
http://www.euronews.com/ Appalling weather conditions in the Black Sea have proved fatal for shipping near Istanbul. The coal freighter Volgo Balt 199 sank in heavy seas with the loss of at least one crewmember. Another cargo vessel, the BBC Adriatic, was foundering nearby in high seas with 14 crewmembers on board after a mechanical failure. The vessel that sank sent a mayday in the early morning. Two rescuers also died after hitting rocks while answering the distress message. One was a fisherman. It happened near the northern end of the Bosphorus Strait, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Four crew were rescued, but seven of the Ukrainian and Russian ship's company are still missing. Turkey's transport minister said rescue efforts by helicopters and coastguard ships were being hampered by increasingly bad weather. The channel is the only way Black Sea countries can ship their goods out, and that includes Russian oil and grain. A Sea Change for the Global Shipping Industry
The global shipping industry has a sulfur problem. Although the world’s shipping fleet accounts for just 7% of the oil used by the transportation sector, it generates 90% of its sulfur emissions, contributing to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases in humans. With a new cap on marine fuel sulfur emissions set to take effect in 2020, there could be a significant impact across multiple sectors. Learn More http://click.gs.com/68pr

16 Lost Underwater Treasure You Didn't Know Existed
Many ships filled lost treasure, gold and jewelry were lost at sea. Some of this lost underwater treasure is still there today, so get your diving equipment and start the hunt. SUBSCRIBE for the latest videos: https://goo.gl/7xzjzR At number 16, we start with a shipwreck that didn’t even require scuba gear to reach. In 1533, The Portuguese ship Bom Jesus vanished off the Namibian coast without a trace. In 2008 the remains of the ship were found, buried in the sand, shipwrecked by a violent storm. Nicknamed “The Diamond Shipwreck” because, well, there’s a diamond mine close by, it is the oldest shipwreck ever discovered on the coast of Africa. Inside the Bom Jesus, 22 tons of copper were found, along with cannons, swords, elephant tusks and thousands of gold coins traced to King Joao [pronounced who-AH-oh] the 3rd. At 15, it’s the Hanneke Wrome. Discovered in south Finland near the island of Jussaro by archaeologists diving underwater, the ship had sunk in 1468 with all of its passengers and cargo. Almost 100 feet long, it is still well preserved and the woodwork still shows the craftsmanship of the Hanseatic builders. Along with other trading goods of the time, The Hanneke was also carrying 10,000 gold coins, which are now worth around $60 million. Next, we continue with The Belitung. Discovered off the coast of Indonesia in 1998, it was an arabian ship; the first to be discovered there actually. As a trading ship, it was filled with spice jars, funeral urns, silver boxes, bowls and crystals. It was carrying treasures such as jewels, rubies and sapphires, silver and gold cups, and flasks. Soon after its discovery, the wreck was purchased by the Singaporean Government and is now a tourist attraction. A really long time ago, between 1200 and 900 B.C., while the Babylon Empire was still a thing, a ship sank off the coast of Devon, England. It was discovered in 2010 by amateur archaeologists, along with over 300 artifacts like weapons, jewelry and copper and tin ingots. It’s not exactly filled with riches like the other ships on our list, but it’s a very important discovery nonetheless. It offers a glimpse into a very distant period in our history and proves that big trade networks existed during the Bronze Age between Europe and Britain. A hurricane brought down the S.S. Central American in 1857, at number 12 on our list, along with its cargo of 15 tons of gold. The shipwreck and the lost gold led to the “Panic of 1857”, the first worldwide economic crisis, that started in the US impacted by the loss of the ship. It was discovered in 1987 and 39 insurance companies made claims to the gold and other artifacts within. When the ship sank, the same insurance companies were forced to pay damages and were now trying to get their money back. After long battles in court, the team that discovered the gold was awarded 92 percent of the treasure. Different pieces of it went up for auction, with one record-breaking sale of one gold bar for $8 million. Next, we continue with a shipwreck of the coast of Greece. Discovered in the year 1900, it was the world's first major underwater archaeological expedition, with scientists from all over the world following it closely. The recovery process took over 70 years, with the last expedition being in 1976. The shipwreck contained the famous Antikythera mechanism, believed to be the world's oldest analog computer. Because of this famous artifact, many people tend to ignore the rest of the treasure, which includes coins and jewelry, glassware, pottery, statues and even couches and beds. The entire collection of artifacts is on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Greece. At number 10 we have The S.S. Republic. Discovered off the coast of Georgia, by Odyssey, a deep sea salvage and exploration company, the ship had been submerged for more than 200 years. Believed to have sunk during a hurricane in 1865, it went down with over 50,000 US silver and gold coins and nearly 14,000 other artifacts, that include thousands of glasses, bottles, and stoneware containers. Shortly after its discovery a lawsuit was filed laying claim to the wreck. A federal judge ruled in favor of Odyssey, and in 2004 the company was legally awarded ownership of the found wreckage. The San Jose was a Spanish galleon destroyed by the British around 300 years ago. Everyone onboard was killed and the ship sank near the coast of Colombia. The ship's cargo includes gems, jewelry, gold and silver, all estimated to be worth $1 billion. Under over 1000 feet of water, deep in the ports of Cartagena, its exact location is not disclosed by the Colombian government, to keep it safe from looters and treasure hunters. A couple of divers were exploring the harbor of Caesarea National Park in Israel when they found a gold coin. It was the first of many, as they would later discover, when the Israel Antiquities Authority returned with a whole team and recovered more than 2000 gold coins

Cursed Shipwreck Yields Treasure and Human Remains | National Geographic
For 450 years, no one knew where the Swedish warship Mars, named for the Roman god of war, sank in the Baltic Sea. The largest vessel of its time went down in a fierce battle in 1564 with more than 800 people aboard. Its discovery in 2011 yielded an astonishingly well-preserved ship, including the seamen who went down with it. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. 88-year-old retires and lives on cruise ship
An estimated 24 million people are expected to take cruises this year. One report showed more than a quarter of them are age 60 or older, and more than one-fifth are retired. For many of those passengers, the ships are like a second home, but for one woman, ocean liner Crystal Serenity is her only home. Peter Greenberg reports.

What is SHORT SEA SHIPPING? What does SHORT SEA SHIPPING mean? SHORT SEA SHIPPING meaning - SHORT SEA SHIPPING definition - SHORT SEA SHIPPING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ The modern terms short sea shipping, marine highway and motorways of the sea refer to the historical terms coastal trade, coastal shipping, coasting trade and coastwise trade, which encompass the movement of cargo and passengers mainly by sea along a coast, without crossing an ocean. 'Deep-sea shipping', 'intercontinental shipping' or 'ocean shipping' refers to maritime traffic that crosses oceans. While 'short-sea shipping' is the term used in Europe, the United States also has used the term, 'marine highway'. Historically, many developed English-speaking countries used the British term 'coasting trade' or 'coastwise trade', which is still used. The coastwise slave trade referred to the domestic slave trade in the United States that shipped slaves by water from the Upper South to major markets, especially New Orleans. The United States maintained this term from its colonial era and began regulating the coastwise trade as early as 1793, with the Congressional passage of "An act for enrolling and licensing ships and vessels to be employed in the coasting trade and fisheries, and for regulating the same", which passed on 18 February that year. Over the years, it has been codified as 46 U.S.C., Coastwise Trade. Some short sea ship vessels are small enough to travel inland on inland waterways. Short sea shipping includes the movements of wet and dry bulk cargoes, containers and passengers around the coast (say from Lisbon to Rotterdam or from New Orleans to Philadelphia). Typical ship sizes range from 1,000 DWT (tonnes deadweight – i.e. the amount of cargo they carry) to 15,000 DWT with drafts ranging from around 3 to 6 m (10 to 20 ft). Typical cargoes include grain, fertilisers, steel, coal, salt, stone, scrap and minerals (all in bulk), oil products (such as diesel oil, kerosene, aviation spirit – all in bulk), containers and passengers. Short sea shipping should not be mistaken with inland navigation. In Europe, short sea shipping is at the forefront of the European Union's transportation policy. It currently accounts for roughly 40% of all freight moved in Europe. In the US, short sea shipping has yet to be used to the extent it is in Europe, but there is some development. The main advantages promoted for this type of shipping are alleviation of congestion, decrease of air pollution, and overall cost savings to the shipper and a government. Shipping goods by ship (one 4,000 DWT vessel is equivalent to between 100–200 trucks) is far more efficient and cost-effective than road transport (though the goods, if bound inland, have to be transferred and delivered by truck) and is much less prone to theft and damage. Roughly 40% of all freight moved in Europe is classified as Short Sea Shipping, but the greater percentage of this cargo moves through Europe’s heartland on rivers and not oceans. In the past decade the term Short Sea Shipping has evolved in a broader sense to include point-to-point cargo movements on inland waterways as well as inland to ocean ports for transhipment over oceans.

A documentary about the work and life aboard the old coaster "Carrick" as she plies the waters of the North Sea and the English Channel trading to the ports of Southern England and the Near Continent. Of particular interest is her passage into the port of Exmouth, Devon, which has since passed into history and been replaced with new housing development. The "Carrick" is also history having been scrapped at Sittingbourne, Kent, in 1988, a few years after this documentary was made.
