Good Manners: What to Say and Do (Polite English)

14:50
http://www.engvid.com/ Learning English? Then you must learn about English culture and etiquette too. I'll tell you the one secret you MUST know to be accepted in North American and British cultures. You'll also learn 12 other good habits if you're studying, working, living, or traveling overseas. This is a cross-cultural English lesson you cannot afford to miss. Take a quiz on this lesson here: http://www.engvid.com/good-manners-polite-english/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, my name is Rebecca from www.engvid.com. In today's lesson, we will be talking about good manners or what can also be referred to sometimes as cross-cultural skills. What does that mean? It's the skills that you need to function effectively in a different culture than your own. So for example: if I were to come to your country and learn your language, do you think that would be enough? Not really, because along with the language, I also need to learn what's acceptable, what's not okay in that particular culture. So today, we'll be talking about 12 things that you need to say and do when you're living or working in an English speaking environment. Okay? Let's get started. So first we'll talk about what you should say. The first one is using the word: "please". Now, everybody knows that you should say "please", but not everybody remembers to actually say it. So for example: if you go into a coffee shop, don't just say: "Coffee." Say: "Coffee, please." Or if you're asking someone else to do something, also remember: "Could you please turn off your cellphone?", for example. All right? Next: remember to say "thank you" whenever somebody does something. "Thank you", "You're welcome": these are phrases that we do use very often in English. And it could be for anything simple like somebody holding the door for you or it could be for something more elaborate like somebody giving you a birthday present. Okay? The way you say it, say it from your heart. Okay? "Thank you.", "Thank you very much." And so on. The next one is to say "sorry", or even better to say "I'm sorry", because "I'm sorry" is more personal. But otherwise, at least say "sorry". And again, you can say "sorry" for little things like perhaps stepping on someone's foot or if you bang into someone by mistake, you bump into someone by mistake somewhere in a crowded place, still apologize, say: "I'm sorry.", "I'm sorry.", "I'm sorry." Okay? We do use that quite often. Next one: "Excuse me." Now, "excuse me" you can say when you sneeze. Right? [Achoo!]. "Excuse me." Or if you need to ask somebody for some information, you can say: "Excuse me, would you know where the nearest subway is?" Right? So this is a very useful expression and it's also a polite expression. The next one is to remember to greet people and also to wish people. By greeting people, even at work if you're working in an English speaking environment, remember we do say "good morning", "good night", "happy birthday", "happy New Year", "congratulations". So greet people, and also wish them on the appropriate days. The next one might seem obvious also, but again, it's the way that you do it. Even if you work in an office, in the morning, we can say: "Hey, good morning. How are you?" And when you ask: "How are you?" even though you're not expected to give a full answer, but whatever answer someone gives you, remember to listen. Don't start talking right away. Wait to hear if the other person is saying: "Oh, pretty good. I'm fine. How are you?" Hear all of that before you start speaking about your own disposition, your own state of mind. Okay? Listen to the answer. All right? So these are six things that you must remember to do; they are taken for granted and they are expected of you. Next: let's look at what you should do. This seventh one here says: "Smile." Smiling creates a more friendly environment and it's certainly expected. So try to do that, again, it doesn't mean you have to keep smiling, but when you meet someone, give them a smile. If you don't smile, they might think that you're nervous, they might think you're angry or unhappy about something. Okay? Or they might take it a little bit aggressively. So try to smile, it makes the... It also gives people the message that everything is okay, not just that you're happy to meet them, but that everything is fine with you. So it says two things: something about you and something about the other person. Next: shake hands. Now, that's usually in a more business-like situation; in an office or somewhere, and certainly when you meet somebody for the first time. In an English speaking environment, you are expected to shake hands and shake hands rather firmly. Don't shake hands very weakly or just hold a part of the hand. Hold the entire hand and shake it firmly. All right? That's, again, part of the office expectation and the business norm.

Learn English Vocabulary - Weather and natural disasters

10:10
http://www.engvid.com Worried about natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis? When we make small talk in English, we often talk about the weather and recent natural events on our planet. In this lesson, I'll teach you English vocabulary to talk about weather, climate, and natural disasters. Watch this lesson, and you'll learn how to follow climate news, how to discuss weather trends, and much more. Take the quiz to test your understanding! When you're done, practice by posting a comment about a natural disaster in your country. http://www.engvid.com/vocabulary-weather-climate-natural-disasters/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome again to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson comes from a few requests from the www.engvid.com comments section. Some people wanted to know about natural disasters. So what I have here is a bit of a combination of climate vocabulary and natural events. I don't call them "disasters" because, realistically, they're only disasters to humans; to nature, they are just events. Okay? Before we begin, I want to make sure we understand the difference between "climate" and "weather". "Weather" is the occurrence of nature every day. Today is sunny, tomorrow is raining, today is a little bit chilly, tomorrow is going to be nice and warm. Every day's situation is the weather. "Climate" is the pattern over usually we talk about a year. So if a country or a place has four seasons: spring, summer, fall, winter - each season has its own climate; rainy, hot, humid, whatever the case may be. So we're going to look at climate and natural events that usually go together. Now, this last year or the past 2 or 3 years have seen some very crazy weather-or sorry-climate events. So I'm going to give you some words to be able to discuss these amongst yourselves. First, we're going to start with: "flood" and "drought". Okay? The "h", the "gh" not pronounced. "Drought", "flood", like going up. So "flood" is when there's too much water. Very heavy rain, sometimes it's because snow melts too quickly in hills or mountains. All the water comes into a low place or a flat place, the earth doesn't absorb it quickly enough or the sewage can't take all of it, the pipes, etcetera so all the water rises up above the ground, goes into your houses, into the subway stations, everywhere. That's a flood, a flood. "Drought" is the complete opposite. A "drought" is what happens when a region or a place doesn't get water, doesn't get any rain for a very long period of time. Everything dries out, all the crops, all the wheat, and rice, and everything dies. Sometimes this leads to a famine. Okay? A "famine" is when there's a lot of people starving. Okay? So this is a natural disaster because human beings and animals are starving because everything died in the drought, there's nothing to eat. Okay, next we have: "earthquake". "Quake" basically means shake. An "earthquake" is when the earth shakes. Okay? Now, what often happens is when there's an earthquake in the sea or near the sea, there's often a "tsunami". Now, this is actually a Japanese word. Actually, it's two Japanese words, but they are used so commonly that we just take them as an English word now. "Tsunami" means harbour wave. Not so important for you guys right now, but it's basically a big wave or a big series of waves that after the earthquake, all the water in the seas or the oceans starts moving around, sometimes it moves on to the land and just destroys everything. I think everybody probably remembers the tsunami from 2006 or so in Indonesia, in that area, very destructive, in Japan a couple of years ago - huge tsunamis. Next, this is what we're experiencing lately with climate change, global warming, whatever you want to call it: "heat waves" and "cold fronts". Now, if you watch the news, the weather channel, for example, sometimes you'll see something like this, you'll see lines with semicircles moving. Other times, you'll see red lines with triangles moving. The blue lines, these are cold fronts, means a very cold mass of air, the cold amount of air is moving. The red one, same thing but heat, a lot of heat. Heat waves are very dangerous because they come very suddenly, it gets very, very hot. A lot of people suffer from it, a lot of people die from it. Same with a cold front, suddenly the temperature really, really drops, minus 20, minus 30, minus 40. And again, very, very dangerous; you don't want to be outside when that happens.

How to Make a Proper Cup of ENGLISH TEA: & the Dirty TRUTH about TEABAGS

10:51
For the perfect cup of English tea use loose tea (never teabags which will not give you the same taste and a very bad for the environment. As well as good quality tea you will need: good water, good milk (if you are using it) and a good quality ceramic tea set. In this video we'll take you through each of these steps so that you get the perfect brew every time. George Orwell wrote an interesting article about making English tea. famous chinese tea scholar Lu Yu (733–804) Known as "The sage of tea" wrote that the best water for tea comes from a mountain stream. For most people this is not possible but we have some age old tips to improve the quality of the tea. For English tea with milk use Ceylon, Assam, Darjeeling or a blend like English breakfast. Earl Grey and other flavoured teas should be taken without milk. CREDITS Haruki Nanmie - A portrait of Lu Yu https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=19945603 By Selena N. B. How should we report on science policy? – Science Magazine's David Malakoff

02:12
An interview with Science Magazine’s Deputy News Editor, Policy & Environment, David Malakoff on the topic of science policy reporting. Malakoff was a panellist at the discussion ‘Hot Button Science Writing: Diving into Controversy & Politics’ at the Science Writers 2014 in Columbus, Ohio. Questions answered: -“ Policy" and "science" can be challenging to write about. Why is this so? - When reporting, how do you balance scientific rigour with the demand for 'more clicks'? - What advice would you give to journalists on covering science policy? - Do you think scientists' commitment to details can make them 'boring' communicators? About the panel discussion: Climate change. Keystone XL. ObamaCare. Government science funding. Increasingly, science, environment, energy and health issues are pulled into the controversial arena of American politics, either locally or in our nation’s capital. With the 2014 mid-term elections looming, how well prepared are science writers to dive into the latest partisan battles? And how can science journalists provide value-added coverage of contentious stories, combining expertise with political savvy? In this workshop, some of the most knowledgeable writers and editors from different beats and markets will provide practical advice on how best to cover “hot-button” issues for mainstream and specialty media. This video was filmed at Science Writers 2014, in Columbus, Ohio. More info at: www.sciencewriters2014.org To learn more about next year's event, visit: www.sciencewriters2015.org

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, to enjoy a better life | Educational Video for Kids.

03:40
The three Rs Hello I am the Earth, yup the very planet you live on. There are three words which start with the letter R which I love. They are: Reduce, reuse and recycle. Do you know why I love them so much? Because they are almost magical words. Together they can make all living things as well as myself be happier. I said that they are “almost” magical because without your help it won't work, they need all of you children in order to do the trick. Each and every one of you are the real 3Rs magicians, those three words which can change the world. Do you want to know how? Yes? Well let's find out. The first R is for reduce. If you think about it, there are many things you don’t need. When you go to the supermarket, I am sure you could take your own canvas bags instead of using disposable ones given to you. This way you will be reducing the amount of plastic which is very contaminating. And I am sure that you don’t need to print out so many documents or photos, nor leave the lights, television or computer on when you are not using them. If you remember this, you will be reducing the amount of paper being used as well as energy, and in turn will be helping reduce the contamination. And these are just a few examples. I am sure you can think of many more different ways to reduce what you are using or creating unnecessary waste. The following question will help you with this task: Do I really need this or is this just a whim? The second R is for recycling. Now it is easier than ever to recycle things we don’t need any more so that they can be reused. Near your home you can find places, like the recycling station and containers for cans, plastic, paper or organic waste. They each have their specific colors to make them easier. By using them, you will avoid contaminating nature, the rivers and seas as well as the atmosphere, which is the air we breathe. And finally we have the third R, which refers to reuse. How many things do you think we can reuse again and again instead of throwing them away? Let´s see…a piece of paper that has only one side printed on it, a carton box, a plastic bottle…you think now. With just a bit of imagination, I am sure you will come up with many more exciting and fun new uses for them. And remember: if you apply the 3Rs rule, you will make me a much cleaner planet, with less contamination and where we all can enjoy a better life. Because as you know…children can make the world of difference.

One thing I want to quickly mention, and Peyman and I discussed this in the video as well, is that Emirati food at restaurants is still not very common in Dubai. This is because there are so many international restaurants in Dubai, and local Emiratis typically just eat their food at home. But things are changing and there is starting to be a higher demand for Emirati food in Dubai. Al Fanar Restaurant - One of the only full Emirati food restaurants in Dubai. We ordered Luqaimat, Tharid, Madrooba, Balaleet. All the food was fantastic, and it’s a nice environment. Total price - 280 AED ($76.21) Karak - 0.50 AED ($0.14) per cup - This is originally adapted from India, but it’s a full part of the culture in UAE, and you can get cups of karak tea right to your car. Al Marhabani Restaurant - Mandi is one of the greatest Arabian food dishes, originally from Yemen. It includes rice and meat that’s traditionally cooked in an underground oven. The lamb here was outstanding. Total price - 200 AED ($54.44) Al Labeeb Grocery - Regag bread - This is a little gem of a shop that Peyman took me to. They make some Dubai street food style crepes with cheese and fish sauce, and it’s awesome. Price - 6 AED ($1.63) each Machboos - Finally at Peyman’s house for dinner, he cooked machboos, one of the national dishes of UAE. It was a great way to end this Dubai food tour! Why I Left Greenpeace

05:41
Patrick Moore explains why he helped to create Greenpeace, and why he decided to leave it. What began as a mission to improve the environment for the sake of humanity became a political movement in which humanity became the villain and hard science a non-issue. Fifteen years later, it had grown into an international powerhouse. We were making headlines every month. I was famous. And then I walked out the door. The mission, once noble, had become corrupted -- political agendas and fear mongering trumped science and truth. Here's how it happened. When I was studying for my PhD in ecology at the University of British Columbia, I joined a small activist group called the Don't Make a Wave Committee. It was the height of the Cold War; the Vietnam War was raging. I became radicalized by these realities and by the emerging consciousness of the environment. The mission of the Don't Make a Wave Committee was to launch an ocean-going campaign against US hydrogen bomb testing in Alaska, a symbol of our opposition to nuclear war. As one of our early meetings was breaking up, someone said, "Peace," A reply came, "Why don't we make it a green peace," and a new movement was born. Green was for the environment and peace was for the people. We named our boat "The Greenpeace" and I joined the 12-person crew for a voyage of protest. We didn't stop that H-bomb test but it was the last hydrogen bomb the United States ever detonated. We had won a major victory. In 1975, Greenpeace took a sharp turn away from our anti-nuclear efforts and set out to Save the Whales, sailing the high seas to confront Russian and Japanese whalers. The footage we shot -- young protesters positioned between harpoons and fleeing whales -- was shown on TV around the world. Public donations poured in. By the early 1980s we were campaigning against toxic waste, air pollution, trophy hunting, and the live capture of orca whales. But I began to feel uncomfortable with the course my fellow directors were taking. I found myself the only one of six international directors with a formal science background. We were now tackling subjects that involved complex issues of toxicology, chemistry, and human health. You don't need a PhD in marine biology to know it's a good thing to save whales from extinction. But when you're analyzing which chemicals to ban, you need to know some science. And the first lesson of ecology is that we are all interconnected. Humans are part of nature, not separate from it. Many other species, disease agents and their carriers, for example, are our enemies and we have the moral obligation to protect human beings from these enemies. Biodiversity is not always our friend. I had noticed something else. As we grew into an international organization with over $100 million a year coming in, a big change in attitude had occurred. The "peace" in Greenpeace had faded away. Only the "green" part seemed to matter now. Humans, to use Greenpeace language, had become "the enemies of the Earth." Putting an end to industrial growth and banning many useful technologies and chemicals became common themes of the movement. Science and logic no longer held sway. Sensationalism, misinformation, and fear were what we used to promote our campaigns. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/why-i-left-greenpeace
