The term jazz dance was first used to describe dances done to the new-fangled jazz music of the early 20th century, but its origin lie in the dances brought from Africa by slaves shipped to America. At that time, it referred to any dance done to jazz music, which included both tap dance and jitterbug. A defining feature was its "free conversation-like style of improvisation." [4] Beginning in the 1930s and continuing through the 1960s, jazz dance transformed from its street form into a theatre-based performance art.[5][6] During this time, choreographers from other genres experimented with the style.,[5] including George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Jack Cole, Hanya Holm, Helen Tamiris, Michael Kidd, Jerome Robbins, and Bob Fosse.[5] All of these choreographers influenced jazz by requiring highly trained dancers, and introducing steps from ballet and contemporary dance.[1][5] In the 1950s, jazz dance was profoundly influenced by Caribbean and Latin American influences introduced by Katherine Dunham.[7]

Jazz Dance Group (Sloane's) to the Song Got It by Marian Hill

02:21
https://www.fitforafeast.com This dance is a very fun and exciting Jazz Group that Sloane had the pleasure of being a part of during her 2016 Dance Competition season. For this, Sloane's last year of competitive dance, she was very happy to return to the studio where it all started...Premiere Dance Inc. owned by the talented Carla Marques. Carla was Sloane's very first competitive dance teacher. With Carla, Sloane learned all the basics of dance technique including turns, kicks and jumps. Carla is one of the best when it comes to training the younger dancers. She has been always successful when it comes to competition and performance. This dance in particular was choreographed by the very talented Kim Falconi. Kim has taught Sloane and her siblings over the years. Although Kim is exceptional in Acrobatic Dance, she is also awesome at choreographing all other genres of dance. This Jazz group is performed to "Got It" by Marian Hill and uses a lot of traditional technique. You will see pump turns or a la secondes, as well as kicks, jumps, jazz walks and movement. It is a great illustration of a jazz group and what the judges are looking for in such a dance. If you click on a couple of these links, you can learn some of these moves. We also have many jazz dance groups, trios, duets and solos right here on our channel. https://www.youtube.com/user/fitforafeast https://youtu.be/LkbigJ2_4AQ Trio https://youtu.be/_GlBzYYhNLg Solo Thank you for watching and please let us know your thoughts or any questions you may have! History of Jazz Dance | Jazz Dance

02:18
Watch more Jazz Dance Moves for Beginners videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501784-History-of-Jazz-Dance-Jazz-Dance Jazz dance originated in the 1800's with the African Americans who were brought over to America on the slave ships. And it was, you know, an expression of their emotion and their physicality. They started using isolations and body movements that were indicative of their culture. From them, New Orleans developed this great jazz music culture and jazz dance continued on in its form and its development. In the 1930's and 1960's, it surged into the musical theater route. And certain choreographers, such as George Balanchine, Jack Cole, Jerome Robbins and Fosse, where using jazz in their musical theater choreography and making it into their own expression of choreography and art. They started using their own style of isolations and contractions and it really, it made a popular rise in the national eye. And as jazz has progressed, it sort of kind of has fed in to progression of music. As music enhances, jazz enhances and choreographers feel the jazz music in a different way and then create different movement. That's where contemporary is coming in to the picture and hip-hop, everything is sort of fusing together. And it all stems from our jazz roots in America. There are some popular icons that brought jazz in to the forefront. Of course, King of Pop is Michael Jackson with his innovative jazz moves. And also Katherine Dunham is the female choreographer who created isolations, as we know them today. Jerome Robbins was another fantastic jazz choreographer that you should know. And he did "Gypsy", and of course "West Side Story", which is some of the most famous and sexy jazz choreography that's out there. And that's just a little bit about the history of jazz dance.

How to Do Basic Turns | Jazz Dance

04:07
Watch more Jazz Dance Moves for Beginners videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501768-How-to-Do-Basic-Turns-Jazz-Dance I’m going to break down a couple of basic jazz dance terms for you. The first one is a pirouette. Here we go. You start with the preparation. Arms are in a nice L position, you step back with your right leg, ball, change, nice deep plié into the ground, you push off your back right foot into a passé, and arms go into a round first position and then drop down to neutral. I’ll break that down one more time. Ball, change, up, and down. A great way to break this down for kids or even beginner adults is to go in the box. Ball, change, hold, and down. Face to side. Ball, change, hold, and down. Face the back, ball, change, hold, and down. Face the side, ball, change, hold, and down. Face the front. Then you break it down into a half turn. Ball, change, face the back, and down. Ball, change, face the front, and down. Important is that the passé leg is completely connected to the knee, okay. So that it’s pressed against, the core is activated, stomach is pressed down into the lower back and you’re also holding your arms in a nice round position, lifting up through the body. After the half turns then you should try for a full turn. If you step on your right and pick up your right leg you turn to the right, and ball, change, up, and down. One more time, ball, change, up, and down. That can then go into a double, triple, quadruple, or five, six, seven, eight turns as the students become more and more advanced with turning. Double, ball, change, up, up, down. You should really try to teach to clean it in a nice parallel position. We can also, and also you need to do that on the right and the left, which I’ll show you with the music. Another basic jazz turn is an inward turn. Inward turns look like this. You start with a nice tombe, arms are prepared and then you pick up your left leg but turn towards your right, using your right arm. Up, and down. Again, the inward jazz turn is up, and down. Again, keep thinking about really pushing off that back leg into the passé right away. I’ll show you to the left. Left arm opens, right arm closes, you push up into the passé and drop down. That’s the inward jazz turn. So there you are. Those are two very basic jazz turns that you can teach your students, inwards and outwards. Ball, change, passé, and down. Side, ball, change, up, and down. Face the back. Ball, change, up, and down. To the side. Ball, change, up, and down. To the front half turn, and to the front. Try to hold that releve as long as possible. Now singles. One more time. Go for a double. Good job. All right you need to reverse that to the left. I’m not going to do that right now, but you guys need to do that. So right and left are very, very important. All right here are the inward turns. Nice tombe, and use your arms pull it up. Up, and down. Good, one more time. Up and down. Other side I will do this time. Up and down. One more time. Up and down. Good. Really try to sustain those turns and lengthen up through your torso.

How to Do Old School Jazz Funk Moves | Jazz Dance

02:10
Watch more Jazz Dance Moves for Beginners videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501776-How-to-Do-Old-School-Jazz-Funk-Moves-Jazz-Dance Alright, here are a couple of my favorite old school jazz funk moves. The first one is a little rock step. Let's do the lower body first. Up, up, down, down, up, up, down, down, up, up, down, down. The upper body rocks it out with the shoulders. Let's put it together. And we're going. Up, up, down, down, up, up, down, down, up, up, down, down. You can just rock that and have a really good time with it. Next old school jazz move is, I call it the king of VOP step because Frank Hatchett originally did it. And feet go in, one heel, the toe comes up, and then the inside toe goes up on rowan. Then you reverse it. Toes in, one toe up, then the heel on the other leg. Then you keep going. Up, down, and up. It's a little bit trickier than it looks, but it's a lot of fun to do once you get going and then you work it out a little bit faster. Good. So breaking that down again, feet go in, toe heel, feet go in, toe heel. Alright, that's king of VOP step. Next one is like a jump, jump rock. So, we're going to go jump, jump, jump and rock, jump, jump, jump and rock. A little bit slower. You're just pushing your hands up, really fun party, go jump, jump, keep your knees nice and soft and pick up your foot, pop your shoulders and step it out. One more time to the left. Jump, jump, jump and rock. And five, six, seven eight. Up, up, down... move it back, king of VOP, in and rock it out. Move it back. Good. Jump it out. Ready and. And those are just a couple old school funk jazz moves for you

Bob Fosse - And All That Jazz

02:51

1920's Jazz Dance 1929 (Duke Ellington)

02:12
From the short: BLACK AND TAN 1929 This is a two part number. Leading off is Fredi Washington who was an actress with some dance experience. It has been said of Fredi Washington that for the sake of her career she could of and should of been willing to pass for white. To her credit she refused to do so. The second part of this number beginning at about the 1:20 mark is a classic example of a so called "Jungle Dance". These demeaning but energetic dances were hugely popular with the white patrons of the Cotton Club and other Harlem night spots in the 1920's.

What Is Jazz Funk Dance? | Jazz Dance

01:16
Watch more Jazz Dance Moves for Beginners videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501786-What-Is-Jazz-Funk-Dance-Jazz-Dance So, what is jazz funk dance? Well, as jazz and dance progresses, choreographers and, you know, just people on the street want to try to fuse things together and transform them in their own way. So jazz funk originated, um, as an expression or a fusion of hip hop and jazz coming together as 1. One of the, um, major contributors of that is Frank Hatchet. He was the King of Bop. And he, uh, fused together all these street styles and funk and African American hip hop moves into the traditional jazz technique and created his own thing. Which is, uh, very cool and innovative. And, um, a lot of people really, uh, jumped on that bandwagon, and took a million classes with Frank Hatchet. And, uh, jazz funk is a great fusion of the jazz technique. As well as funk and soul and, uh, own personal styles, just, just meshing into, into the music and how you feel the music. And that's pretty much the definition of jazz funk.
