15 Ways to Recognize And Avoid Low Quality Clothing
15 tips that will help you detect a poor-quality item right on the spot. When we buy a piece of clothing, we want to get a quality item. Unfortunately, it often happens that new clothes shrink or get torn after the first wash. TIMESTAMPS Check the quality of cotton by squeezing it 0:40 Hold the fabric up to a bright light 1:09 Pull the seams to see the gaps 1:33 Avoid open zippers 2:02 Check the hem 2:24 Give fabric a tug 2:53 Make sure the zipper matches in length 3:13 Well-cut 3:26 Pay attention to the label 4:09 Make sure the seams and threads match Check buttons and buttonholes 5:07 Check if it has a yoke 6:17 Look at the coloring of the folds 6:42 A center back seam 7:08 Patterns matchup 7:33 How to Select the Perfect Clothes for Your Body Shape 8:26 SUMMARY - When buying clothes made of cotton, do this simple but very illustrative test: grab some fabric and squeeze it as tightly as you can in your fist for a few seconds. Then check if the fabric looks like a crumpled piece of paper. - To check the thickness, hold the fabric up to a bright light. If you don’t see much through it, you are safe to buy it. - A pull test can help you understand if you are holding a piece of junk in your hands, or if you have to pay for it right now feeling happy that you found it. So, try pulling stitched pieces apart. - Make sure you buy clothes and accessories with metal zippers covered with a strap: they are the most reliable and long-lasting. - Pants and skirts should have a hem of up to 2 inches. Blouses and shirts can do with a smaller one of about 1 inch. If there is no hem at all or it’s simply stitched, we do recommend buying this item. - A quality item will always keep its shape. Take a stretchy part of a dress or a skirt, tug on it and then let it go. - Zippers on dresses, skirts, or any other kinds of clothing should be equal in length, even and math in color. - If you notice symptoms like this, don’t jump to the conclusion that you shouldn’t have skipped your gym. It’s possible that the manufacturer just saved money and didn’t use enough fabric. - Natural fabrics, such as cotton, silk, and wool are strong and more durable than synthetics. However, 100% cotton can quickly shrink after washing. - Examine fabric pattern and thread colors. If patterns don’t match and stitches are made with threads of different colors, it is a clear sign that this item was made in a hurry. - When manufacturers make a fake or a low-quality item, they often don’t pay attention to little details. This is why you should always carefully examine buttons and buttonholes before buying an item. - Good shirt and blouses must have a shoulder yoke. It makes the top look neat on you. Cheap items of clothes don’t have a yoke, so they don’t just look bad, but also uncomfortable to wear. - If the coloring on the handles, straps, or fastenings looks faded or leaves marks on the folds, this is a clear sign of a low-quality item. - When you buy a jacket or a coat, pay extra attention to the center back seam. The thing is your back probably doesn’t look completely flat, so if you want it to look beautiful, there must be a quality back seam. - Even a very quick look at them can tell you a lot about how much effort has been put into producing the item. For example, if the pattern on the pocket doesn’t match the pattern on the rest of the item, it means that the production was sloppy, and they tried to save money on the materials. DIY Fabric Labels
Don't forget to Subscribe for WEEKLY Video Tutorials! This video shows you how to make your own fabric labels. This has been by far the most cost effective way for me to make labels for my etsy shop, but you can put anything on the fabric which is the great thing about Spoonflower! My labels are about 2 3/4 x 3/4. I used Pellon SF101 interfacing, but any sort of lightweight, 1 sided interfacing will work. Pellon SF101, the woven interfacing just happens to be my favorite. I never have trouble with it bubbling.

Tweed: The Fabric of Creativity
At Tweed, we think that cannabis is more than just a plant. It has the ability to bring people together to build community and move it forward – just like the world of fashion. Tweed: The Fabric of Creativity opened the collective fashion show on March 9th at TOM* F/W 2018, weaving the storytelling and parallels of 4 designers' creative process in fashion with that of the cannabis industry. Inherently tied to textiles by way of its name, the Tweed collective show featured a total of 19 designers from across Canada, each showcasing two ensembles that combined tweed, or hemp fabric, as well as an interpretation of the essence of the Tweed brand. Produced by: Merry Jane Director: Marcella Marcytrynowicz Cinematographer: Gus Bendinelli Want to learn more about Tweed? How to recognize poor vs. good quality in clothes (in 5 points) | Justine Leconte
This video explains how to spot (cheap) bad quality clothing and what high quality would look like. You don't need to be a fashion designer to learn how to recognize poor quality! I tackle the following 5 points: - Good fit / Good cut - Colors / Dyeing - Prints / Appliqués / Jacquards - Fabrics / fibers - Sewing quality / Stitching / Threads ... and THANK YOU for 50,000 SUBSCRIBERS ON THIS CHANNEL!!! Thumbs up if you liked this video! Any question? Comment below. New videos: Wednesday 5pm & Sunday 12pm (Paris/Berlin time). Take care! Justine ************************************* FIBERS MENTIONED - The core 4 natural ones: cotton, silk, linen and wool. - The "new" natural ones (with better properties, derived from natural materials): modal (better than cotton), viscose (made from wood), tencel (made from bamboo). - The most common synthetic ones: acetate (this one is old and not breathable, stay away!), rayon (a substitute for silk), nylon, acrylic (a substitute for wool), polyamid, elathane (great to make e.g. a cotton fabric or denim fabric bounce back after you have moved!) How a Dior Dress is Made | Visionaire | Refinery29
Subscribe to the Refinery29 channel: http://bit.ly/subscribe-to-r29 “Couture” is a magic word. It conjures thoughts of impeccable craftsmanship, visionary design, and legendary fashion moments. But, most of us don't encounter haute couture very often, unless we're looking at a celebrity on the red carpet, a model on a catwalk, or a mannequin in a museum case. We wanted to get closer to couture — and to get you closer to couture — so we partnered with the legendary fashion publisher Visionaire to create this video, which tells the story of one dress from birth to runway. It’s a unique look inside the Dior atelier, where the team has been hard at work bringing creative director Raf Simons’ ideas to life. While an individual couture garment can take half a year to produce, here you will see the story of one dress (“Look #53,” in fashion-speak) come together in just a few minutes — from the first muslin pattern to the final style model Kinga Rajzak wore during yesterday’s haute couture show. It’s an incredible revelation, and when you discover what goes into these garments, the crazy prices on couture start to seem at least a little less crazy. While Look #53 is the star of the show, the video gives us the chance to reconnect with the rarely credited artisans and seamstresses we saw in Dior and I, as well as a cameo from Simons himself. Think of this as a mini-trip to Paris or a crash course into fashion’s highest form; either way, enjoy your couture, concentrated.
