CppCon 2018: James McNellis “Unwinding the Stack: Exploring How C++ Exceptions Work on Windows”

01:06:26
http://CppCon.org — Presentation Slides, PDFs, Source Code and other presenter materials are available at: https://github.com/CppCon/CppCon2018 — If you’re writing modern C++ code, then it’s likely that you are using exceptions—whether you’re throwing them yourself or just using library code that might throw (e.g., std::vector). Have you ever stopped to think about how exceptions work under the hood? What actually happens at runtime when you throw an exception? How is the right catch statement found? In this session, we’ll explore how C++ exceptions actually work in the Visual C++ implementation on Windows. This session will discuss: * A very, very brief overview of how exceptions work in the C++ language * The code and data structures the Visual C++ compiler generates to facilitate proper stack unwinding * Exactly what happens when an exception is thrown, how the right catch statement is found, and how the stack is unwound * Structured Exception Handling (SEH), the Windows OS feature atop which C++ exceptions are built * How the Visual C++ runtime library interacts with the OS during stack unwinding * Interoperation with non-C++ exceptions, like hardware exceptions * How termination handling works when no matching catch statement is found or when a noexcept boundary is reached * How things differ on different architectures (x86 is very different from x64 and ARM!) This information can be very useful when debugging tricky problems—especially during postmortem debugging when you’re trying to figure out what went wrong before a program crashed—and we’ll highlight particular pieces of information that are most useful. — James McNellis, Microsoft Corporation Principal Software Engineer James McNellis is a Principal Software Engineer at Microsoft where he works on the Time Travel Debugging (TTD) reverse debugging toolkit. Prior to joining the Windows Debuggers team in 2016, he worked on the Visual C++ team and was responsible for the Microsoft C Runtime (CRT) and C Standard Library implementation. Passionate about all things related to C++, he is a frequent speaker at C++ conferences around the world and is a former top contributor on StackOverflow. — Videos Filmed & Edited by Bash Films: http://www.BashFilms.com

Get web page data into Excel using VBA

14:47
Our Excel training videos on YouTube cover formulas, functions and VBA. Useful for beginners as well as advanced learners. New upload every Thursday. For details you can visit our website: http://www.exceltrainingvideos.com/complete-automation-of-getting-web-page-data-into-excel-worksheet-using-vba/ In this video we show the complete automation of how to get data into an Excel worksheet using VBA. 1. We first study the website and find out the elements we'll need to access a form and the subsequent results. When you study the web page's HTML source code you'll note that the actual results are wrapped up in DIV containers. 2. Next we write the VBA code We use the getElementById method to get a reference to a single object and the getElementsByTagName method to get a collection of all the elements. Next we loop through all the elements and get the text properties or data ('innertext') of all the elements we wish to have. Our code instantiates our web browser (Internet Explorer) and navigates to the URL of our choice and then helps to get or extract the data using events. We also ensure that the code is placed in appropriate columns and rows so that any further analysis is made easy. Finally we use a recorded macro to format the data to make it more presentable to the human eye. You can view the complete code at: http://www.exceltrainingvideos.com/complete-automation-of-getting-web-page-data-into-excel-worksheet-using-vba/ Interesting Links: http://www.tushar-mehta.com/publish_train/xl_vba_cases/vba_web_pages_services/index.htm http://officevbavsto-en.blogspot.com.br/2012/06/vba-internet-acessing-web-pages-through_15.html?m=1 Get the book Excel 2016 Power Programming with VBA: http://amzn.to/2kDP35V If you are from India you can get this book here: http://amzn.to/2jzJGqU

CppCon 2018: Victor Ciura “Enough string_view to Hang Ourselves”

01:01:55
http://CppCon.org — Presentation Slides, PDFs, Source Code and other presenter materials are available at: https://github.com/CppCon/CppCon2018 — Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a standard C++ type to represent strings ? Oh, wait... we do: std::string. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could use that standard type throughout our whole application/project ? Well… we can’t ! Unless we’re writing a console app or a service. But, if we’re writing an app with GUI or interacting with modern OS APIs, chances are that we’ll need to deal with at least one other non-standard C++ string type. Depending on the platform and project, it may be CString from MFC or ATL, Platform::String from WinRT, QString from Qt, wxString from wxWidgets, etc. Oh, let’s not forget our old friend `const char*`, better yet `const wchar_t*` for the C family of APIs… So we ended up with two string types in our codebase. OK, that’s manageable: we stick with std::string for all platform independent code and convert back-and-forth to the other XString when interacting with system APIs or GUI code. We’ll make some unnecessary copies when crossing this bridge and we’ll end up with some funny looking functions juggling two types of strings; but that’s glue code, anyway… right? It’s a good plan... until our project grows and we accumulate lots of string utilities and algorithms. Do we restrict those algorithmic goodies to std::string ? Do we fallback on the common denominator `const char*` and lose the type/memory safety of our C++ type ? Is C++17 std::string_view the answer to all our string problems ? We’ll try to explore our options, together: best practices, gotchas, things to avoid... all in the context of modern C++ projects. — Victor Ciura, CAPHYON Software Developer Victor Ciura is a Senior Software Engineer at CAPHYON and Technical Lead on the Advanced Installer team (http://www.advancedinstaller.com). For over a decade, he designed and implemented several core components and libraries of Advanced Installer. He’s a regular guest at Computer Science Department of his Alma Mater, University of Craiova, where he gives student lectures & workshops on “Using C++STL for Competitive Programming and Software Development”. PHP+MY SQL TRAINING VIDEO..

05:31
PHP development began in 1994 when the Danish/Greenlandic/Canadian programmer Rasmus Lerdorf initially created a set of Perl scripts he called "Personal Home Page Tools" to maintain his personal homepage. The scripts performed tasks such as displaying his résumé and recording his web-page traffic. Lerdorf initially announced the release of PHP on the comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi Usenet discussion group on June 8, 1995. He rewrote these scripts as Common Gateway Interface (CGI) binaries in C, extending them to add the ability to work with Web forms and to communicate with databases and called this implementation "Personal Home Page/Forms Interpreter" or PHP/FI. PHP/FI could be used to build simple, dynamic Web applications. Lerdorf released PHP/FI as "Personal Home Page Tools (PHP Tools) version 1.0" publicly on June 8, 1995, to accelerate bug location and improve the code. This release already had the basic functionality that PHP has today. This included Perl-like variables, form handling, and the ability to embed HTML. The syntax was similar to Perl but was more limited and simpler, although less consistent. A development team began to form and, after months of work and beta testing, officially released PHP/FI 2 in November 1997. Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans, two Israeli developers at the Technion IIT, rewrote the parser in 1997 and formed the base of PHP 3, changing the language's name to the recursive initialism PHP: Hypertext Pre processor.Afterward, public testing of PHP 3 began, and the official launch came in June 1998. Suraski and Gutmans then started a new rewrite of PHP's core, producing the Zend Engine in 1999. They also founded Zend Technologies in Ramat Gan, Israel. On May 22, 2000, PHP 4, powered by the Zend Engine 1.0, was released. As of August 2008 this branch is up to version 4.4.9. PHP 4 is no longer under development nor will any security updates be released. On July 13, 2004, PHP 5 was released, powered by the new Zend Engine II.PHP 5 included new features such as improved support for object-oriented programming, the PHP Data Objects (PDO) extension (which defines a lightweight and consistent interface for accessing databases), and numerous performance enhancements. In 2008 PHP 5 became the only stable version under development. Late static binding had been missing from PHP and was added in version 5.3. A new major version has been under development alongside PHP 5 for several years. This version was originally planned to be released as PHP 6 as a result of its significant changes, which included plans for full Unicode support. However, Unicode support took developers much longer to implement than originally thought, and the decision was made in March 2010 to move the project to a branch, with features still under development moved to trunk. Changes in the new code include the removal of global, magic quotes, and safe mode. The reason for the removals was that register_globals had opened security holes by intentionally allowing runtime data injection, and the use of magic quotes had an unpredictable nature. Instead, to escape characters, magic quotes may be replaced with the add slashes() function, or more appropriately an escape mechanism specific to the database vendor itself like mysql_real_escape_string() for MySQL. Functions that will be removed in future versions and have been deprecated in PHP 5.3 will produce a warning if used. Many high-profile open-source projects ceased to support PHP 4 in new code as of February 5, 2008, because of the GoPHP5 initiative, provided by a consortium of PHP developers promoting the transition from PHP 4 to PHP 5. Since version 5.4, PHP has native support for Unicode or multibyte strings, allowing strings as well as class-, method-, and function-names to contain non-ASCII characters. PHP interpreters are available on both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems, but on Microsoft Windows the only official distribution is a 32-bit implementation, requiring Windows 32-bit compatibility mode while using Internet Information Services (IIS) on a 64-bit Windows platform. Experimental 64-bit versions of PHP 5.3.0 were briefly available for MS Windows, but have since been removed. Licensing PHP is free software released under the PHP License, which insists that: Products derived from this software may not be called "PHP", nor may "PHP" appear in their name, without prior written permission from [email protected] You may indicate that your software works in conjunction with PHP by saying "Foo for PHP" instead of calling it "PHP Foo" or "phpfoo". That is to say, as much as it can be difficult to get your code to build and run correctly, it is manifestly harder to keep it working in the face of changing assumptions and requirements. This is true no matter the scale, from a small program to a shared library. Only two solutions have been shown to be theoretically sound: never change or provide no compatibility guarantees. What if there were a third option? What if we took the question of maintenance out of the realm of theory and moved it to practice? This talk discusses the approach we've used at Google and how that intersects with other languages, package management, API and ABI compatibility, and a host of other software engineering practices. The particulars of C++ as a language and an ecosystem make it well positioned for a different approach: Live at Head. — Titus Winters: Google, C++ Codebase Cultivator, NYC Titus Winters has spent the past 6 years working on Google's core C++ libraries. He's particularly interested in issues of large scale software engineer and codebase maintenance: how do we keep a codebase of over 100M lines of code consistent and flexible for the next decade? Along the way he has helped Google teams pioneer techniques to perform automated code transformations on a massive scale, and helps maintain the Google C++ Style Guide. — Videos Filmed & Edited by Bash Films: http://www.BashFilms.com

Mix Tests and Production Code With Doctest - Implementing and Using the Fastest Modern C++ Testing Framework http://CppCon.org — Presentation Slides, PDFs, Source Code and other presenter materials are available at: https://github.com/CppCon/CppCon2017 — Not a typical talk about testing. Here are some quotes from the Program Committee about it: "Seeing a talk proposal about a new unit test framework made me quite skeptical. But then I looked at slides from one of the previous talks, and this looks very cool." "I think others will be just as interested; this is just the kind of talk we want at the conference." "Doing interesting and meaningful things in header-only libraries can be a fascinating topic, and this presentation appears to address some very interesting learnings from such an experience." "The presentation is clearly well-prepared, having been given previously and iterated upon." doctest is new to the C++ testing framework scene but is by far the fastest both in compile times (by orders of magnitude) and runtime compared to other such feature-rich alternatives. It brings the ability of compiled languages such as D / Rust / Nim to have tests written directly in the production code by providing a fast, transparent and flexible test runner with a clean interface which can be removed entirely from the binary along with all tests for release builds of the software that are shipped to customers. The framework can be used like any other even if you don't want/need to mix production code and tests - the list of features doesn't stop growing. By attending this talk you will get familiar with the framework and see how it's different from all the rest. To make things more interesting the presentation will not just focus on using the framework, but will delve into useful and generally applicable C++ techniques from its implementation for more than half the session length which can be applied in different areas of your work - like how to: register code automatically before the program enters main() decompose expressions with templates translate exceptions - type-erased user-registerable translators write a header-only library which compiles very very fast not at the cost of runtime performance implement assert macros that don't result in code bloat deal with warnings outside of the framework header - generated by code expanded from macros loop a void owl once with while((void)0,0) — Viktor Kirilov: Bulgaria With 3.5 years of professional experience with C++ in the games and VFX industries, Viktor currently spends his time writing open source software (since 01.01.2016). His interests are the making of games and game engines, high performance code, data oriented design, minimizing friction and incorporating good practices in the software development process such as testing and the use of modern tools like static analysis or instrumentation. Viktor is from Sofia, Bulgaria and his profession is his hobby. — Videos Filmed & Edited by Bash Films: http://www.BashFilms.com

The param column extracting function

09:43
On Sept 28th, 2012 I posted a function and alias generating loop created by @brimston3 on Twitter. This video explains how it works. I missed this link when brimstone posted this in IRC, but he got the inspiration from Dustin Kirkland and made a few changes: http://blog.dustinkirkland.com/2010/08/buy-1-get-8-free-or-useful-awk-hack.html And then I made a few changes, so now its all new. ;-) mattcen also noted that if you take out the single quotes around the awk statement that the eval command isn't necessary. Good catch. So you can make this one even shorter. More information about climagic available at http://www.climagic.org/

How To "Dot" Into Anything, Anywhere, Anytime (Facilitating Data-First Programming) - Steven Taylor

55:51
Take the data-first programming perspective further by exploring APIs, services and documents with self-generating .dll assemblies and Intellisense (a.k.a. the TypeProvider framework). We're not talking run-of-the-mill code-gen, but of a lazy way to completely resolve references to inferred structures and schema-based namespaces, giving your IDE+REPL the type-safe scaffolding and real-time magic required, so that your team can more rapidly solve business needs, using new data sources and services. Perhaps a pointed at schema is a rapidly changing work in progress, but you'd still like to derive value out of it, or you'd just like to reduce some discovery based friction -- there are a range of interesting applications. We'll dig into the Type Provider approach and implementation, why it's a more robust way forward than using Roselyn for this class of problem, and how to get productive building your own Type Provider. Assuming that C# eventually gets a Type Provider feature, we'll go into why you might want to consider a multi-paradigm, functional-first language like F#, to express this kind of logic anyway, especially, if the work is available readily available to C# consumers, too, as F# is a first-class CLR language -- so it's just a matter of referencing a library via standard CLR interop. We'll cover some of what it means to be good CLR .NET citizen in this session, too. You might even go as far to say that Type Providers are a well-defined interface for introducing the benefits of functional programming to an established OO team. Type Providers are cross-platform, and usable on Windows, Linux, and OSX through legacy, .NET Core, and .NET Standard. INTERESTING APPLICATION: Data Lakes with schema-on-read and schema-on-write. i.e. what happens if structure permutations during ingest fare infinite? Reducing friction make a lot of sense in this cases like these. note: the schema can change in real-time. * where anything includes, but is not limited to, the Interwebs, the IOTs, and the internet-of-internets. This video is part of the Infosec Video Collection at SecurityTube.net: http://www.securitytube.net https://www.defcon.org/images/defcon-19/dc-19-presentations/Weeks/DEFCON-19-Weeks-Network-Nightmare.pdf The best techniques for exploitation, maintaining access, and owning in general move down the stack, using low-level code to bypass security controls. Take the preboot execution environment and get bios-level access to the hardware from across the network, outside any control of the on-disk operating system. In this presentation I will detail the pxesploit attack I wrote, releasing a new metasploit-based comprehensive PXE attack toolkit to deliver any payload reliably to many different operating systems. Also new will be the ability to host a PXE attack through a meterpreter session in memory, using it to escalating privileges and own remote networks. Matt Weeks has performed research in mathematics in chaos and cryptology, and focuses on information security. He enjoys finding ways to break application security, writing shellcode, and creating post-exploitation techniques. Also known as scriptjunkie, he is a developer for the Metasploit framework, wrote the sessionthief MITM tool, and broke a cryptosystem based on chaos theory. He runs a blog at http://www.scriptjunkie.us/

RubyConf 2017: Human Errors by Olivier Lacan

29:45
Human Errors by Olivier Lacan Runtime errors can sometimes turn into dark and unpleasant journeys which lead you to question the nature of reality. Thankfully, Ruby often provides friendly feedback for understanding the cause and remedy for exceptions. Yet, there are situations in which programmers don't receive clear enough context for what really caused an exception and how to address it. We'll look at Ruby's error feedback mechanisms and search for constructive ways in which they can be made more helpful to humans.

Using a modern web to recreate 1980s horribly slow & loud loading screens - Remy Sharp

29:52
Content warning: High frequency visual flickering and noise. These days people chase the dream of high performance, fast loading slick web sites. But in the 1980s computers were ugly, slow and loud: let’s make that instead 👴👵💪 The first generation of home computers launched a movement of developers and hackers across the world. But to start your app, you had to load a tape (a really old usb-type-thing), press play, and patiently wait for the screech of the program to load (akin to listening to a fax machine). Why invest time in building fast website, when we can have fun building slow old retro machines using JavaScript. The end result is a mix of Web Audio, canvas API, cameras, audio jacks, binary, typed arrays, blobs, history of computing and a lot of questionable JavaScript. OMG JSConf EU is coming back in 2019 https://2019.jsconf.eu/

XAMPP may come with the display_errors variable set to "Off" because that is the preferred setting for production. But when you are developing, it means that if you have a syntax error you will get a blank screen or a 500 - Internal Server error. This video goes through the steps to edit the php.ini file to change the configuration of your web server to display PHP errors in the browser. A high-quality version of this video is available at http://www.php-intro.com/install.php

Excel VBA Pull Data From A Website

07:16
The website has changed since I originally made this video. The state appears to have been removed but you can still get the city and county at least. Change the code from what I say in the video to this: Dim sDD as string sDD = Trim(Doc.getElementsByTagName("dd")(0).innerText) sDD = split(sDD,VbNewLine)(0) Range("city").Value = Split(sDD,", ")(0) Range("county").Value = Split(sDD,", ")(1) A tutorial showing how to pull data from a website. In this tutorial I make a zip lookup that pulls in the city, state and county based on a given zip code. Since posterous closed: http://brettdotnet.wordpress.com/2012/04/20/excel-vba-pull-data-from-a-website-update/
