Muscular Girls Show Their Biceps
We don’t see many muscular women in popular culture – and the display of much heavier and obviously stronger female bodies can be overwhelming or shocking. Professional tennis playing sisters Serena and Venus Williams, who are currently in Australia for the summer tennis season, are good examples of female athletes who have received a lot of negative attention for their “thicker” arms and heavier-set, muscular bodies. Other examples include retired world champion bodybuilder Bev Francis and South African middle-distance runner Caster Semenya. They have all been criticised for having bodies that can’t possibly belong to real women. Why are we so afraid of strong, muscular women? After all, there’s nothing unnatural about a strong and muscular woman. What’s unnatural is preventing and discouraging women from reaching their full physical potential in the name of femininity. Unlike male bodybuilding, women who compete in body sculpting are required to minimise their muscularity. Body sculpting or body figure competition is a sport that only women can compete in. It’s also a sport where the contradiction of muscle and femininity is most obvious. Many women train long and gruelling hours to become strong and muscular – only to be told on competition day that they’re not feminine enough. In contrast to men’s bodybuilding, femininity is part of the women’s judging criteria. Competitors are told to emphasise femininity, symmetry, proportion, tone, definition and to minimise physique and muscle mass. They’re also expected to display graceful gestures, soft movements and have an hourglass figure. They have to wear make-up, heels, revealing and sparkling bikinis. Judges have even been found selecting women who are big-busted, pretty and slim and whose muscles aren’t visible unless flexed. Femininity is linked to a female body that is slender, neat and sexually attractive. Because the muscular female form is so challenging, sports such as body sculpting use femininity as a buffer to counter the fact that women also have muscle. (We don’t judge male bodybuilders on their masculinity, their “maleness”.)

After venturing into the world of bodybuilding, it wasn’t long until Cass had become aware of the legends of the sport. She saw a video of Ronnie Coleman lifting weights and was inspired by the brute force of the Mr. Olympia legend. Becoming fascinated by Ronnie’s strength and charisma – she knew that she wanted to increase her lifts. It was at this point, when Cass began training with heavier weights to achieve her new goal. A couple of months later, Cass’ fascination for bodybuilding had peaked – she’d fallen in love with working out. She began following the journey of fitness athletes on social media in her spare time – Cass was motivated by the intense training sessions of other fitness models, and how they managed to retain their femininity during their workouts. For even arm growth, for every biceps move you do, match it with a triceps one. Step 2 Learn how to do dips. Narrow-grip dips, keeping your arms close to your body, are a highly effective triceps builder, according to strength coach Sally Moss. Position yourself between the handles of a dipping station and take your feet off the floor. Bend your elbows as you descend, going as low as possible, then push yourself back up. If you're struggling with body-weight dips, Moss recommends negatives, where you simply perform the lowering part of the lift, but do it as slowly as possible. Step 3 Add chin-ups to your routine. Grab a chin-up bar with an underhand grip, let your body hang completely straight, then pull yourself up until your shoulders are in line with your hands. This might sound simple, but they're incredibly tough and many women struggle with chin-ups, according to trainer Charles Poliquin. To get around this, Poliquin advises performing negative reps, or having a partner help you by assisting on the way up. Alternatively, if you train on your own, tie a resistance band around the bar, place your knees in the loop and use the band to give you a helping hand. Step 4 Perform a triceps isolation move next. Dips hit your triceps, but they also work your chest and shoulders; now it's time to really fatigue the triceps. Sit on a weight bench and hold a dumbbell in one hand. Lift your arm overhead so it's completely straight, then bend your elbow so the weight comes down behind your head. Keep going until you feel a stretch in the triceps muscle, then forcefully lift it back up. Keep your upper arm locked in place -- all the movement should take place at the elbow. Complete all the reps on one arm, then switch sides. Step 5 Stay sitting on your bench, but this time hold a dumbbell in either hand. Sit with your arms hanging down by your sides and palms facing forward. Hold your elbows steady, then lift the dumbbells up until your hands reach chest height. Pause for a second while squeezing your biceps, then lower the weights down slowly. Step 6 Train your arms two to three times per week, advises the "Shape" magazine website and complete two to three sets per exercise. To build muscle, perform six to 12 reps per set, with the weight heavy enough to be challenging, but not so heavy you fall short of the six-rep minimum or use poor form. When the weights start feeling light, increase them. Step 7 Increase your calories. To build muscle, you need more calories.
