How product design can change the world | Christiaan Maats | TEDxUniversityofGroningen
Christiaan Maats is a designer and entrepreneur who challenges the way we look at product design. Going beyond form and function he shows us how products carry deeper layers of meaning and how those layers can connect us to a bigger reality. In this Talk, Christiaan Maats explains how meaningful products can embody the change we want to see in the world and sheds light on his own vision of a circular society that integrates industrial society with its natural roots. Christiaan Maats was born and raised in Groningen, though he studied Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University in Delft. His keen interest in the psychology behind product- and brand experience took him to Sydney, Australia where he conducted a case study titled “Storytelling through Product Design”. Good product design is good storytelling, according to Christiaan. His creation of the world’s first biodegradable shoes that bloom is a perfect example of his philosophy. Christiaan considers himself a practical idealist. He is driven by his passion for innovation and creating products and brands that inspire a better future by making you smile, think and wonder. His refreshing ideas on sustainable innovation disrupt the status quo. Christiaan's diverse background and enthusiasm are great ingredients for an inspiring TEDx Talk that focuses on the society of the future and how to get there. The new paradigms of product development | Günther Schuh | TEDxRWTHAachen
Times are changing rapidly in product innovation and development. In order to cope with the challenges, companies must face the shortcomings of their traditional processes and embrace the ongoing paradigm shift. This includes some possibly uncomfortable but necessary adjustments, but to Günther Schuh, the benefits are clear. Günther Schuh is a professor for production engineering at RWTH Aachen University and member of several different directorial boards such as the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering and the Fraunhofer Institute of Production Technology. His research covers a wide range of aspects of modern industrial engineering, from production and innovation management to business development for manufacturing companies and factory planning. With a strong commitment to real life industrial challenges and as a founder of both StreetScooter and e.GO Mobile, two electric car manufacturers initiated at RWTH Aachen, he makes a stand for the Aachen academic landscape as a breeding soil for product and process innovation. Product Design at Dublin Institute of Technology
DIT's Product Design programme is the first of its kind in Ireland. Graduates of the programme have gone on to a variety of successful careers in Ireland and abroad. In the course of this four year honours degree, students are immersed in the various disciplines of product design through a unique interdisciplinary approach -- students develop their knowledge and skill sets through modules in the areas of design, engineering and business. This integrated method produces product designers who have the ability and confidence to be both creative and innovative in whatever role they choose to pursue. It gives them the necessary ability to face the challenges of designing new products and bringing them to market. Graduates of the program have proven themselves. equally comfortable in the design studio, the engineering office and the boardroom. Students learn how to produce accurate physical models of their designs using the extensive studio and prototyping facilities. They also use industry standard design software to bring their projects to fruition. In the capstone module of the programme, students conceptualise, design and develop a novel product. A number of students have developed successful products in this project which they have gone on to pursue and develop further upon graduation. While the final project is important for the students' individual development, a series of team projects over the course of the program help the students to develop interpersonal skills along with an appreciation of team dynamics. Students of the programme have won and been shortlisted for prestigious national and international awards including the Enterprise Ireland All Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, the James Dyson award, the International Forum for Design Concept awards in Hannover, Germany and the Staples Global Eco-easy Challenge in Washington DC, USA. Students of the programme have won and are regular finalists in the DIT Bolton Trust Student Enterprise awards in which they must demonstrate the ability to form their own company, design and develop a new product and produce a viable business plan in tandem. Product Development Using Systematic Inventive Thinking (SIT)® | Columbia Business School
Professor Gita Johar talks about the Product Development Using Systematic Inventive Thinking (SIT)® course, in collaboration with Columbia Business School. Successful companies, such as Kraft, Shell, BASF, Nestle, Amdocs, Johnson & Johnson, and many others employ the Systematic Inventive Thinking (SIT) methodology to solve key business challenges, achieve extraordinary results in product development, and rapidly innovate. In this course, you will explore the SIT methodology, one of the most popular and well-known methodologies for innovation whose foundation evolves from a key principle that inventive solutions share common patterns. Further, you will learn how to extract these patterns using the five thinking tools: Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Task Unification and Attribute Dependency. Applying these five systematic thinking tools during the process of product development will help you identify new ideas, solutions, and products or define new needs for a particular product. Systematic Inventive Thinking approach begins by studying an existing product and its features. The approach focuses on the notion that function follows form, where the likely success and production viability is evaluated after visualizing the improved product. By focusing on the core principles of SIT, you can significantly improve your product development pipeline and create a culture of innovation within your teams and organization.

Product management vs Project management vs SDLC | Comparison and Relationship
We will look into the relationship and difference between product life cycle management, project life cycle management and SDLC (Software Development Life cycle management) with a simple example in this video. First we will try to define, life cycle phases and major focus of each of these. Product management: Product life cycle management is the process of managing the entire life cycle of a product from inception, through engineering design, and manufacture, to service and disposal of manufactured products. Generally Product life cycle management has the following phases. Idea generation Idea Screening Business Analysis Product Development Test Marketing Commercialization Evaluate and refine Major focus of product life cycle management is, the features and functionalities of the product that it offers to the customers. Now we will look into Project management. As per Project management institute (PMI), Project can be defined as a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. the temporary indicates the project has a define start and end time. Project management can be defined as the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. As per PMI, project management has five process group or phases as follows. Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling Closing. The main focus of project management is, to ensure the deliverable are meeting the requirements. Let's move on to SDLC life cycle management. SDLC can be defined as a process for planning, developing, testing, and deploying an information system. SDLC management deals with this managing the process associated with SDLC to build the IT system. Generally it has following 5 phases and according to the selected methodology these phases may or may not overlap. Requirements gathering Design Development Testing, and Implementation Major focus of SDLC management is, to build the system according to the specifications. Let me connect the product, project, and SDLC life cycle with a simple example. Lets imagine a scenario where company XYZ wants to launch a new online web store that helps the merchants to sell their products online. As a first step The XYZ company will start with the initial process of product life cycle management, idea generation, idea screening and business analysis are been performed and business cases are produced to support the launch of the online store. Now the company will start a new project for developing and launching the site. At this stage, the first phase of the project Initiation will be kicked off and project charter, stake holder register will be created. At the time project planning phase, SDLC life cycle starts. Also during the project planning phase, Software Development Methodology (SDM) will be chosen to implement the SDLC process and the software development starts. Normally entire SDLC will be contained in planning, execution, monitor & control phases of project life cycle. I would like to mention one point here. we can't exactly define at what phases of project management life cycle, the SDLC process will fit in, as the SDLC process might or might not overlap based on the selected software development methodology. So here I made an assumption of water fall SDLC methodology is followed. System development and launching process will start either at the planning, or slightly before that, and go through the execution and finishes at the monitoring and control phase. At this stage, SDLC life cycle ends. Next phase of the project is the project closing phase where the required documents will be submitted and the project will get closed formally. Though the project is closed here, still the product life cycle continues here. Product evaluation and refining is a continuous process and the product will be evolved further based on the customers feed back or through some analysis. Lets say, the company wants to roll out a mobile version of the application to the market. At this point of time one more project will be started and will continue the same cycle as mentioned above. So in a nut shell, a product life cycle will have many project life cycles and SDLC will be a part of the project management life cycle.

Innovation - Students of Product Design Episode1
This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. I have a lot more planned, so please be patient, stay tuned and follow me, so that you can be alerted to when the next video is launched. www.producttank.co.uk
