Everyone who has tried these methods has a different take on them of course, and it depends on what types of projects you are making and selling, but hopefully our personal experiences will help others who are interested in selling handmade products. We think one cool thing about selling handmade is you can do it as a full business or as a side hustle, so it's easy to dip your toes into it. We started out doing pop up shops and starting an Etsy page, and these led us to joining the West Elm local program where we started selling wholesale. We'd love to hear others' tips and tricks as well, since we are still learning lots the more we do this. Do you guys prefer small craft fairs, bigger trade shows, selling online on Etsy or your own store, selling wholesale, etc?

Eco-businesses employ a total of 3.4 million people across Europe. This week, Business Planet takes a trip to Croatia for a closer look at a very specific kind of innovation: noise barriers. The noise barriers being built along the motorway near Zagreb are spearheading innovation. They are made up of 40 percent of recycled tyres and are among the most efficient on the market. They are the result of a project launched in 2009 as part of the European Eco-Innovation programme. One of the companies involved in their production is an SME which recycles tyres, turning them into a powder used to build the barriers. It's a great opportunity for innovation, says the company's chairman: "If we achieve the goals that were set, we're hoping to hire up to 30 people and double our production capacity," says Damir Kirić, the chairman of Gumiimpex. The powder is mixed with cement at another factory, where the noise barriers are moulded. Here, too, it's hoped the project will help hire an extra 60 people. "It's opened up new doors. We're hoping to increase turnover by 25 percent in Croatia, but also in neighbouring countries," says the Managing Director of Beton Lučko, Danica Jelenić. It's a serious investment. Danica Jelenić put in 355 000 euros. She is delighted with the result. "Taking part in this project has really strengthened our position. We're taken seriously by other players on the market," she says. The European Eco-Innovation programme gives access to subsidies to launch a project. To this day, it has benefited 200 projects throughout Europe. The noise barrier project was born at Zagreb University. It is the brainchild of professor Stjepan Lakušić. Half of the project was funded by the Eco-Innovation programme, which provided half a million euros. Now, the plan is to sell this innovative technology to neighbouring countries, where there is always a need for fresh ideas on how to recycle tyres. "You need 65 tonnes of recycled tyres to produce a kilometre-long barrier that's one metre high. That's 8,000 old tyres," says RUCONBAR Project Coordinator Stjepan Lakušić. This new technology has already attracted a number of potential buyers seduced by the low production cost. "Using recycled products brings down the cost by ten to eighteen percent compared to similar products on the market," says Stjepan Lakušić. This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. Going to a tradeshow is very expensive and so a lot of legitimate suppliers do not go because it is hard to make enough money back to make it profitable. What this means is that if a supplier has gone, then it indicates they are financially is a good position (which means they are unlikely to go out of business any time soon). If your supplier is on Alibaba, you can go to their profile and check to see if they have visited any tradeshows. If your supplier is based on Aliexpress, find the brand of the item that you would like to sell and then go to Alibaba to locate the manufacturer. You can then visit the manufacturers profile page to see if they have been to a tradeshow. #2: Avoid using pictures with models If you are working with a Chinese dropshipper on Aliexpress or a Chinese supplier on Alibaba and they have stock photos that use models, we recommend that you don’t use those photos yourself. This is because Chinese suppliers have a history of illegally taking pictures from model’s social media accounts (like stealing the images from Instagram). They can get away with this in China, but in the West the model can contact Facebook/Amazon and get your ad/listing taken down. Avoid using pictures with models so that you don’t infringe on copyright. #3: Check to see if you’re working with a manufacturer, trade company or wholesaler On Alibaba you will usually encounter two types of suppliers: manufacturers and trade companies. A manufacturer is the factory that originally made the item. A trade company is a middle-man between a manufacturer/factory and you. Neither is better than the other, they both have advantages and disadvantages. The advantage with a manufacturer is that you’re going straight to the source and it’s usually cheaper. On the other hand, a trade company usually charges more since they make a commission on the sale, but their reps usually speak better english which makes communication much better (sometimes they can negotiate lower prices than if you were buying straight from the manufacturer as well so it’s good to check even if you are price sensitive). You can check what the company is in their Alibaba profile. On Aliexpress you’ll usually encounter either manufacturers or wholesalers. Manufacturers tend to brand their store their generic label brand (e.g. Transhome) and only sell products under their brands. Wholesalers will usually name their store something less generic (e.g. Mr & Mrs Store) and will sell products from a variety of manufacturers. Wholesalers are sometimes more expensive but they have a wider selection of products. #4: Recap your agreements and contracts in writing If you and your supplier are negotiating a contract or an agreement, make sure that you get your suppliers to recap it and write out the agreement in text. It’s very easy for both cultural and language differences to cause misunderstandings. Ask your suppler to recap each element of your agreement in text (either by email or by sending a copy of your contract in writing). #5 Prioritize products that have multiple manufacturers The profit margins for Chinese manufacturers is very small, because they sell their items so cheaply. That, along with the fact that doing business in China is relatively difficult means that unless a factory is well managed, it can go bankrupt and have to close. If you’re dropshipping an item or private labeling it for Amazon and your supplier goes out of business, then unless you have a backup supplier that manufactures the same item - you will have nothing to sell and your money will dry up. That is why, when choosing between products, it’s good to look for one that has multiple manufacturers and suppliers. Then, on the off-chance your supplier has to close it’s doors, you can switch to a new one - and your business can continue, and you can keep making money.

Follow these 6 tips to help you make the right choice. This video was made in collaboration with Greg Mercer, founder of Jungle Scout. Tip #1 for private labeling on Amazon FBA: Look for items that have healthy competition When we tell people to look for items that have high buyer demand but low seller competition, people mistake that and think we are suggesting that they look for items that have no other sellers in the marketplace. But this is a mistake for 2 reasons: 1) It gives you more information to work with. When an item has pre-existing sellers, you can track their sales and see important data trends. For example, you can see if all of the sales were dominated by a few sellers, or if it is split amongst multiple sellers. This is important information, because if only a few sellers are dominating the sales, then we know it is a brand-driven market and it will be difficult to break into. Whereas, if the sales are split more evenly amongst multiple sellers, then we know that there is room in the marketplace for multiple competitors. 2) Having multiple sellers in the niche means that they will be attracting customers to Amazon already. This gives us the opportunity to come in and steal the sales away from them! In our video tutorial on Jungle Scout, we recommend using the Jungle Scout Web App to search for products on Amazon’s database that are selling 300 units a month, while only having 50 reviews or less. Tip #2 for private labeling on Amazon FBA: Choose simple products Choosing simple products that have less potential for headaches is what we recommend to beginners who are picking a product to private label for Amazon FBA. Here are things that you should avoid: 1) Avoid products that have easily breakable parts, such as electronics. Part of why Greg chose to manufacture bamboo sticks is that even if there were mistakes in the manufacturing process, the customer would not notice and the products would still work. 2) Avoid products that are big and heavy. Focusing on small and lightweight items makes them easier to ship and to handle inventory. 3) Avoid items that are licensed, such as items containing pictures of mickey mouse, as this will get you into legal problems. Tip #3 for private labeling on Amazon FBA: Be prepared to sell products you aren’t passionate about Sometimes, the niches we are interested are saturated, or that don’t have products to manufacture that are suitable. Be prepared to look outside of these niches. When Greg chose to sell bamboo sticks, he wasn’t particularly passionate about them - but he knew they made money, so he chose them. Tip #4 for private labeling on Amazon FBA: Avoid seasonal products It’s a lot easier to focus on items that have constant, on-going demand so that you can have regular cash flow throughout the year. For example, christmas lights are going to have a huge spike at Christmas time, but throughout the rest of the year sales will be very low. To check if an item you are thinking of selling has only seasonal demand, use Google trends to track how often an item is searched for over the year. Tip #5 for private labeling on Amazon FBA: Look for items that have a higher price point Amazon has will charge you two types of fees: 1) A variable percentage-based Amazon fulfillment fee 2) A fixed pick-and-pack fee While the variable fee will increase as your price increases, the fixed pick-and-pack fee will not. This means that as the price of your product increases, your profit margins exponentially increase as well (and inversely, as your price decreases, your profit margins exponentially decrease). That is why I usually recommend looking for aiming for a price of at least $15 so you’re paying no more than 35% in fees per sale. Tip #6 for private labeling on Amazon FBA: Don’t follow your gut Sometimes in marketing/sales, following your gut is the way to go. But when it comes to investing your money in purchasing products, do not follow your gut, as you will risk losing a lot of money. Go with the safer option of making data-driven decisions. How to find the best products to private label for Amazon FBA using Jungle Scout. ►► Get Jungle Scout: http://wholesaleted.com/yes/junglescout (affiliate link) ►► Free Ebook - Make $10,000/Month Online: http://wholesaleted.com/4-step Step 1 to pick the best products to private label for Amazon FBA: Research items that have potential to be profitable To do this, you will need a subscription to the Jungle Scout web app. All versions of this (including the lowest cost subscription, the Startup Edition) include the Product Database, which we will be using for step 1. 1) Start by signing into your Jungle Scout subscription. 2) Go to the web app, and select the Product Database. 3) Click on a category to analyze. You can analyze all categories if you like. If you find this overwhelming, then start out by selecting a category that interests you. 4) Set it to find items that have a maximum of 50 reviews or less. 5) Set it so that items must be making a minimum of 300 sales a month. 6) Set it so that they price must be between $20 and $50. 7) Set it to weigh a maximum of 2 pounds. 8) Select from the dropdown menu to show up to 200 products. 9) Do a search. You’re done! It’s time to move onto the next step. Step 2 to pick the best products to private label for Amazon FBA: Filter the results Now it’s time to take the items we found in step 1 and manually review them. We want to look for items that meet the following criteria: * It’s not a big-brand product. * It’s not bulky. * It’s not difficult to manufacture or likely to break easily. * It doesn’t require variations. This is a crucial step when finding the best products to private label for Amazon FBA and you can’t automate it: You need to go through the items manually. When you find an item that meets this criteria, add it to your product tracker (a tool included in all levels of the Jungle Scout Web App). Step 3 to pick the best products to private label for Amazon FBA: Analyze the Competition Now that we’ve filtered items that have potential in step 2, we need to go through it’s competitors and analyze how difficult the competition will be. To do this, we are going to use the Jungle Scout Chrome Extension. Both versions of this (Lite & Pro) will work for this Jungle Scout tutorial for 2017. 1) Open up the Amazon listing for the first item you added to the product tracker. 2) Go to the search bar, and type in a description of what the product is. 3) On the search results page, click the Jungle Scout chrome extension button. 4) Load up the results, and look at the top 10 listings. On average, is the item selling for $20 or more? If so, move onto step 5. If not, remove this item from your product tracker and move onto analyzing the next item. 5) Look at the total sales volume for the top 10 sellers. Are they selling 3,000+ units a month combined? If yes, continue onto step 6. 6) Look at the top 10 sellers - are each of the top sellers on average making 300+ sales a month? It’s OK if some are, as long as in general, they are making 300+ sales a month. If the answer is yes, move onto step 7. 7) Look at the top 5 sellers for the product. Is there at least one seller in there with 50 reviews or less? If yes, move onto step 8. 8) Look at the top 10 sellers for the product. Are there at least three sellers in there with 50 reviews or less? If the answer is yes, then congratulations - you’ve found a winning product! Bonus step to pick the best products to private label for Amazon FBA: Analyze the SEO competition For this bonus step, we will need access to the Jungle Scout Niche Hunter. This is a tool that is only included with the Standard & Business editions of the Jungle Scout Web App. This step is optional, but I strongly recommend it if you want to find the best products to private label for Amazon FBA. If you don’t use the Niche Hunter to automate the process for you, then I recommend performing this step manually. 1) Sign into your Jungle Scout Web App (Standard or Business) and select the Niche Hunter. 2) Type in what the product is into the search. 3) Analyze the keywords, and look for keywords that have a Listing Quality Score of under 60. If an item has a score below this, the SEO competition will be easy to relatively easy/moderate, anything about this will be harder to compete in. Why You Shouldn’t Dropship Product #1: Because It Has Very Few Reviews The first Aliexpress product revealed in this video to avoid is very risky. It is tempting because it is making a lot of sales - indicating that there is demand for it. But with very few historical reviews, you don’t have enough information to know if a supplier will be good at fulfilling orders (especially if you start selling a lot). Will the quality of the items go down as the production goes up? Is the supplier good at shipping this item out on time? How many people truly like the item that they receive? A small number of reviews isn’t enough to make an assessment on this. It can be very tempting to sell items that have very few reviews - especially if it’s in a hot niche that lacks products. But I strongly recommend avoiding them because you’re risking getting refunds, disputes and chargebacks if the supplier can’t follow-through. Why You Shouldn’t Dropship Product #2: Because it Contains Trademarks This Star Wars mug is illegally using the Star Wars logo - a trademark they don’t have permission to reuse. Dropshipping this is very bad for two reasons: 1) The product will get removed from Aliexpress because it is illegal. It is only short-term money. 2) It’s illegal to sell it, and you are risking getting into trouble with the law by dropshipping it. Why You Should Dropship Product #3: Because it’s VERY Boring & Generic A lot of people ask us the same question: why would a customer purchase an item from your store at a markup, when they can go to Aliexpress or Amazon.com and buy it from there instead for cheaper? Won’t the potential customer price-check your item? The answer to this is that they won’t… if you focus on getting the customer to IMPULSE BUY and on creating SCARCITY. To get a customer to want to impulse buy, you need to make them have an emotional reaction to the item that they are seeing. They need to look at it and really, really want it. That is why the guitar mug that we featured in this video sells so well - because it’s the perfect item for someone the both plays guitar and loves hot drinks. Scarcity is also very important. This is when you make the customer feel that they have a limited amount of time to take an action. A good way to create scarcity when dropshipping is to run limited-time-offers, e.g. you’ll sell the next 20 products at a 60% discount. This makes the customer take action and purchase it so they don’t miss out on the 60% discount. And, because they think they are already getting a good deal, they don’t bother to price-check the item against Aliexpress/Amazon.com. But with generic/boring products, it’s very difficult to make them impulse buy because the item is not very exciting and doesn’t appeal directly to something they love. In addition, it’s very hard to create scarcity because they can buy generic/boring products from anywhere cheaply. So stick to selling unique, original, special items. Why You Shouldn’t Dropship Product #4: Because It Doesn’t Have ePacket Shipping Make sure you ship items that have 2-3 week delivery options (like ePacket) so that customers get their items faster. This will make customer support a lot easier and you’ll get less emails from unhappy customers asking where their item is. Why You Shouldn’t Dropship Product #5: It Has TERRIBLE Photos Good photos showcase what is unique and special about an item. This item (electric bottle opener) does not do this at all. The unique element to this item is that you can watch the cork go up the bottle opener. However, the pictures do not show this at all. Instead, they are just photos of the actual product itself, which looks boring. As a new dropshipper, you will want to take advantage of free stock photos that your supplier provides, which means that you need to focus on dropshipping (and testing) products that have great photos as they are the most important part of the ad and product listing. If you personally reach out to them, you can negotiate special deals like lower prices, free shipping and more. Talk to your suppliers and form a relationship with them. #3 Of the Aliexpress dropshipping mistakes: Creating a general store and selling everything You should always be looking to create a store that focuses on a specific niche. Don’t try to be like Walmart and sell everything. By offering lots of choices, you create lots of distractions. Your conversion rates will be much higher if you focus on finding a few high-quality products that appeal to a specific niche that will make them excited and inspire them to buy right then-there without distracting them with other products that they don’t want. In addition, focusing on a particular niche allows you to build your branding around it, which will also increase your conversions. You can focus on finding the right store name, URL, store theme, colour scheme, logo and more to fit with your niche. #4 Of the Aliexpress dropshipping mistakes: Focusing on the “Best Selling Items” on Aliexpress A lot of people pick their items by going to the “Best Sellers” on Aliexpress, and assume that those are the hot items that they should be promoting. But this isn’t the case: There are lots of items on Aliexpress that will sell very well, but people haven’t necessarily discovered them yet. So don’t get hung up on the “Best Sellers” and be prepared to find your own items on there to sell. #5 Of the Aliexpress dropshipping mistakes: Losing money by focusing on getting new customers, rather than on upsells Did you know that it costs McDonalds $1.91 in advertising to get you to buy something? Then, when you go ahead and purchase a burger for $2.08, they only make $0.18. Doesn’t seem worth it, right? Buuuut… when they sell you fries and a drink for $1.50 more, they are now currently making $1.68 in revenue… an increase by over 900%! If McDonalds were to instead take the mentality of increasing revenue through finding new customers, they’d have to find over 9 new customers. The lesson for this is that it’s a lot easier to increase revenue/profit by upselling current customers and getting them to spend more, than it is to focus on advertising and trying to acquire more customers. When setting up your Shopify store then, focus on building funnels that upsell customers you’ve captured into spending more money with you, rather than just investing in more paid advertising. #6 Of the Aliexpress dropshipping mistakes: Not letting the market dictate what you should sell There are lots of tools at your disposal which will help you pick the right items to sell. You have the Google Keyword Research Tool which will tell you which keywords/phrases (and thus items) that people are searching for. And you have the Facebook marketing insights which tells you purchasing behaviour, what pages people like and gives you insights into the types of demographics you can target. Use these tools to help you identify items that people want to purchase. Don’t try to guess. High-end brands like gucci are able to ask for higher prices because they appeal to what the customer wants, even though they don’t need it. If you want to sell high-profit items, then appeal to a customer’s wants rather than their needs. The third of our 10 tips for selling online: Be patient with free, organic traffic. Who doesn’t like free things?! Unfortunately, free traffic has a downside: It takes time to work. It takes time for Google to index your website, it takes time to climb up the search engine rankings. If you want to leverage free traffic that is fine, but be prepared to be patient. If you want fast results, use paid traffic. The fourth of our 10 tips for selling online: Use paid traffic to find high-profit items. One of the benefits of paid traffic is that you can use it to test multiple products. You don’t have to wait for Google to start sending you traffic to see if the product converts well or not, you can instantly find out by sending some paid traffic towards it… and use it to figure out which items are duds and avoid them! The fifth of our 10 tips for selling online: You don’t need the lowest price or the highest feedback to compete. Here are some ways to compete with other sellers: * If you’re selling/dropshipping an item on Amazon with a pre-existing listing, win the Buy Box. * Create better Amazon (or eBay) listings than your competitors with better photos and a better description. * If you’re dropshipping in your own store using Aliexpress, then you don’t need to worry about price because you set the price expectation. The sixth of our 10 tips for selling online: Build a sales funnel to beat your competitors. Build a sales funnel with upsells. By increasing the profit you make for each customer, it means that you’ll earn a higher CPM (cost-per-mile) than your competitors that aren’t building a funnel. You can then afford to out-buy their paid traffic because you’re earning more money than them. The seventh of our 10 tips for selling online: Never take anything for granted During the Q4 2016 season, Amazon closed their Amazon FBA warehouses to new FBA sellers. This was unexpected, and a great lesson as to why you should always take action today rather than waiting until tomorrow: Because the industry is always changing. Never take anything for granted. The eighth of our 10 tips for selling online: Never be attached to a product that you love Don’t just sell a product because you like it. Choose your products from the perspective of your customers and NOT yourself. If a product doesn’t have interest, then drop it and focus on finding a new product that converts better, even if you think it is great. The ninth of our 10 tips for selling online: Shoot first, aim later Bite the bullet and start your ecommerce store, create an Aliexpress store, list your first product on Amazon or create your first Amazon listing. It won’t be perfect but that is OK, because you are learning. It’s easier to understand what we teach when you’d tried it yourself. And the final of our 10 tips for selling online: Diversify your Products Try to think about other items you can sell your customers.
