There was once a day when a woman would come of age to find a suitable partner and a man would then graciously court her, and before we know it, she would make him commit and they get married, they have children, and they buy that beautiful house with a white picket fence. Then, we went from the 20th century to the 21st century, and things started to change. The internet happened, men started to flake, they began to download Tinder. Women began to wait to get married before they settled down. The entire dating advice field errupted because people were confused. The very fabric of how we interact with one another completely changed, and now you're probably sitting there at home wondering, "How did this happen, and why don't men commit anymore?" How do I get him back? #1: Paradox of Choice The paradox of choice is a psychological theory that basically means that when there are too many options available, humans are terrible at finally making a decision. For example, let's say you wanted to start a business, and you were gonna start selling jelly. The worst thing that you could do is come up with 12 different flavors of jelly because if someone comes to your jelly stand and they see all 12 different flavors, it's likely that they're not even going to buy even if they love jelly! It's because they wouldn't be able to make a choice, and many times, the more options you have available to you, the harder it is to finally decide. So really, if you're starting a jelly business, you'd really only want to have two or three different options, it makes it a lot easier to choose. Now relate this to dating scene nowadays. Everyone feels like they have so many different options. They go on a date one night, then they go online, they go to their apps, and they look at all these other options. At the end of the day, they may not even have this many options, it's a perception that they have all these other options available to them. So, people are not committing like they used to... #2: There's less societal pressure to get married at a young age People just aren't getting married anymore at 22. The median age 1950s was 22 years old to get married. Now the median age for men is 28, and I've even seen it in my own social group. Look, I'm 32 and I'm not married yet, and some of my friends, yeah some of them are married, but some of them are not married. #3: Women are also less likely to want commitment as well. Now, you're here because you probably want a committed relationship because why would you be watching a video like this? Or, at least, you're open to the idea of a relationship. But times have changed, and men are finding that women are also less interested in commitment. And men are also getting frustrated, especially the guys who do want a relationship, because they're noticing that women are not necessarily looking to just settle down. One of few factors that workers can control if they want to increase their earning potential is to enter into a high-paying field. Earlier this year, CNBC Make It analyzed data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which calculates median weekly earnings of full-time wage and salary workers, in order to rank the 15 best-paying jobs for women. Now, we've taken another look at the data in order to rank the jobs offering men the highest wages. These are the 15 highest-paying jobs opportunities for men: 15. Environmental scientist/Geoscientist Number of men: 51,000 Median weekly earnings for men: $1,746 Estimated annual earnings for men: $90,792 14. Marketing and sales manager Number of men: 566,000 Median weekly earnings for men: $1,747 Estimated annual earnings for men: $90,844 13. Human resources manager Number of men: 92,000 Median weekly earnings for men: $1,748 Estimated annual earnings for men: $90,896 12. Aircraft pilot/Flight engineer Number of men: 105,000 Median weekly earnings for men: $1,750 Estimated annual earnings for men: $91,000 11. Physician/Surgeon Number of men: 463,000 Median weekly earnings for men: $2,277 Estimated annual earnings for men: $118,404 1. Chief executive Number of men: 823,000 Median weekly earnings for men: $2,415 Estimated annual earnings for men: $125,580 Chief executive topped the list as the highest-paying job for men (it was also the highest-paying job for women.) According to BLS data, there were roughly 823,000 men working as chief executives in the U.S. in 2017. These workers reported median weekly earnings of $2,415 — about $125,580 a year. When you compare these figures to the amounts that C-suite women are making, the gap is noticeable. BLS data indicates that just 313,000 women held the top-paying title of chief executive in 2017. On average, women chief executives in the U.S. make $1,920 per week — approximately $99,840 a year. Along with CEO, the jobs that round out the five highest-paying jobs for men all pay more than $100,000. Men who work as physicians and surgeons, pharmacists, lawyers and architectural and engineering managers can all expect to earn six-figure salaries. Many of the top-paying jobs for men require skills and experience in STEM, fields in which men tend to make up the majority of the workforce. Is a manufacturing process out of control? What percentage of men are taller than Lebron James? How about taller than Yao Ming? All of these questions can be answered using the concept of standard deviation. For any set of data, the mean and standard deviation can be calculated. For example, five people may have the following amounts of money in their wallets: 21, 50, 62, 85, and 90. The mean is $61.60 and the standard deviation is $28.01. How much does the data vary from the average? Standard deviation is a measure of spread, that is, how spread out a set of data is. A low standard deviation tells us that the data is closely clustered around the mean (or average), while a high standard deviation indicates that the data is dispersed over a wider range of values. It is used when the distribution of data is approximately normal, resembling a bell curve. Standard deviation is commonly used to understand whether a specific data point is “standard” and expected or unusual and unexpected. Standard deviation is represented by the lowercase greek letter sigma. A data point’s distance from the mean can be measured by the number of standard deviations that it is above or below the mean. A data point that is beyond a certain number of standard deviations from the mean represents an outcome that is significantly above or below the average. This can be used to determine whether a result is statistically significant or part of expected variation, such as whether a bottle with an extra ounce of soda is to be expected or warrants further investigation into the production line. The 68-95-99.7 rule tells us that about 68% of the data fall within one standard deviation of the mean. About 95% of data fall within two standard deviations of the mean. And about 99.7% of data fall within 3 standard deviations of the mean. The average height of an American adult male is 5’10, with a standard deviation of 3 inches. Using the 68-95-99.7 rule, this means that 68% of American men are 5’10 plus or minus 3 inches, 95% of American men are 5’10 plus or minus 6 inches, and 99.7% of American men are 5’10 plus or minus 9 inches. So, this means only about .3% of American men deviate more than 9 inches from the average, with .15% taller than 6’7 and .15% shorter than 5’1. This reasoning suggests that Lebron James is 1 in 2500 and Yao Ming is 1 in 450 million. In particle physics, scientists have what are called 5-sigma results, results that are five standard deviations above or below the mean. A result that varies this much can signify a discovery as it has only a 1 in 3.5 million chance that it is due to random fluctuation. In summary, standard deviation is a measure of spread. Along with the mean, the standard deviation allows us to determine whether a value is statistically significant or part of expected variation."

Wages are the biggest expense for most businesses. So, hiring only women would reduce costs by nearly a quarter – and that would go right to the bottom line. Don’t businesses want to be profitable? Or, are they just really bad at math? Well, actually, it’s the feminists, celebrities and politicians spreading this wage gap myth who have the math problem. Here’s why: The 77-cents-on-the-dollar statistic is calculated by dividing the median earnings of all women working full-time by the median earnings of all men working full-time. In other words, if the average income of all men is, say, 40,000 dollars a year, and the average annual income of all women is, say, 30,800 dollars, that would mean that women earn 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. 30,800 divided by 40,000 equals .77. But these calculations don’t reveal a gender wage injustice because it doesn’t take into account occupation, position, education or hours worked per week. Even a study by the American Association of University Women, a feminist organization, shows that the actual wage gap shrinks to only 6.6 cents when you factor in different choices men and women make. And the key word here is “choice.” The small wage gap that does exist has nothing to do with paying women less, let alone with sexism; it has to do with differences in individual career choices that men and women make. In 2009, the U.S. Department of Labor released a paper that examined more than 50 peer-reviewed studies and concluded that the oft-cited 23 percent wage gap “may be almost entirely the result of individual choices being made by both male and female workers.” Well, let’s look at some of those choices. Georgetown University compiled a list of the five best-paying college majors, and the percentage of men or women majoring in those fields: Number 1 best-paying major: Petroleum Engineering: 87% male Number 2: Pharmaceutical Sciences: 48% male 3: Mathematics and Computer Science: 67% male 4: Aerospace Engineering: 88% male 5: Chemical Engineering: 72% male Notice that women out-represent men in only one of the five top-paying majors – by only a few percentage points. Now consider the same study’s list of the five worst paying college majors: Number 1: Counseling and Psychology: 74% female Number 2: Early Childhood Education: 97% female 3: Theology and Religious Vocations: 66% male 4: Human Services and Community Organization: 81% female 5: Social Work: 88% female Here, it’s the women who lead in all but one category. Even within the same profession, men and women make different career choices that impact how much money they make. Take nursing, where male nurses on the whole earn 18% more than female nurses. The reason? Male nurses gravitate to the best-paying nursing specialties, they work longer hours, and disproportionately find jobs in cities with the highest compensation. Women's median yearly earnings relative to men's rose rapidly from 1980 to 1990 (from 60.2% to 71.6%), and less rapidly from 1990 to 2000 (from 71.6% to 73.7%) and from 2000 to 2009 (from 73.7% to 77.0%). More recent statistics show in 2014 that women's median pay has increased to 79 cents, according to the Institute for Women's Policy Research. The raw wage gap data shows that a woman would earn roughly 73.7% to 77% of what a man would earn over their lifetime. However, when controllable variables are accounted for, such as job position, total hours worked, number of children, and the frequency at which unpaid leave is taken, in addition to other factors, a United States Department of Labor study, conducted by the CONSAD Research Group, found in 2008 that the gap can be brought down from 23% to between 4.8% and 7.1%.[48] The gender pay gap has been attributed to differences in personal and workplace characteristics between women and men (education, hours worked, occupation, etc.) as well as direct and indirect discrimination in the labor market (gender stereotypes, customer and employer bias etc.).[49][50][51] The estimates for the discriminatory component of the gender pay gap include 5%[52]:2 and 7%[53]:9 for federal jobs, and a study showed that these grow as men and women's careers progress.[53]:93 One economist testified to Congress that hundreds of studies have consistently found unexplained pay differences which potentially include discrimination.[53]:80 Another criticized these studies as insufficiently controlled, and said that men and women would have equal pay if they made the same choices and had the same experience, education, etc.[52]: Other studies have found direct evidence of discrimination in recruitment.[54] A 2007 study showed that for identical resumes fewer replies were sent to men compared with women (it also showed that women do worse when they have children, while men do worse when they don't).[54] Another study showed more jobs for women when orchestras moved to blind auditions although, in normal orchestra interviews, women were preferentially chosen over men for some instruments, such as the flute.[52][not in citation given] Contrary to these other studies finding discrimination against women, a 2015 study showed that women were preferred by a factor of 2 for academic roles in STEM subjects.
