The Legacy of Fairchild Semiconductor

[Recorded Oct 5, 2007] Founded in September 1957 in Palo Alto, California by eight young engineers and scientists from Shockley Semiconductor Laboratories, Fairchild Semiconductor Corporation pioneered new products and technologies together with a youthful enthusiasm and manufacturing and marketing techniques that reshaped the semiconductor industry. The planar process developed in early 1959 revolutionized the production of semiconductor devices and continues to enable the manufacture of billion transistor microprocessor and memory chips today. Fairchild was the first manufacturer to introduce high-frequency silicon transistors and practical monolithic integrated circuits to the market. At the peak of its influence in the mid-1960s, as a division of Fairchild Camera & Instrument Corporation, the company was one of the world's largest producers of silicon transistors and controlled over 30 percent of the market for ICs. Fairchild's extraordinary success stimulated an entrepreneurial fervor that gave birth to the phenomenon of Silicon Valley. Including systems and software businesses, the total number of companies in the Bay Area and beyond with Fairchild roots today lies in the thousands. This lecture was presented during a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the company held at Stanford University and the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California on October 4, 5, and 6, 2007. Introduced by Staff Director of the Semiconductor Special Interest Group of the Museum and Fairchild Alumnus David Laws, the speakers are all Fairchild alumni who went on to make significant contributions to the semiconductor industry. They were asked to explore the lasting impact of Fairchild Semiconductor on Silicon Valley and the world. Wilfred Corrigan earned a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the Imperial College of Science, London, England. After early work at Transitron and Motorola, Corrigan joined Fairchild Semiconductor in 1968. He served as president and chief executive officer of Fairchild Camera and Instrument Corporation from 1974 until 1979. In 1981 he co-founded ASIC pioneer LSI Logic Corporation where he served as president, CEO, and chairman until 2005. Gordon Moore was born and spent his childhood near San Francisco, California. He earned a PhD in Chemistry and Physics from the California Institute of Technology. He was one of the eight co-founders of Fairchild in 1957. As head of R&D, in 1965 he published an observation on the increase of integrated circuit complexity with time, now known as "Moore's Law" that emerged as one of the driving principles of the semiconductor industry. In 1968 Moore co-founded Intel Corporation with Robert Noyce, became president and CEO in 1975 and held that post until elected chairman and CEO in 1979. He remained CEO until 1987 and was named chairman emeritus in 1997. W. J. (Jerry) Sanders III was born in Chicago. He earned a BS in electrical engineering from Illinois State University and worked at Douglas Aircraft and Motorola before joining Fairchild as a salesman in 1961. He rose to group director of worldwide sales and marketing before leaving to co-found Advanced Micro Devices in 1969. Sanders served as president, CEO. and Chairman of AMD until 2004. Moderator Floyd Kvamme was an early Fairchild marketing manager, vice president of marketing at National Semiconductor, and executive vice president of Sales and Marketing for Apple Computer. He is a partner emeritus at the venture capital firm of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and co-chair of the president's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. It's fully integrated and pre-certified, and it requires no RF expertise from the designer. It's also backward compatible with the PAN1026, but it adds some new features and enhancements. One of the biggest advantages of the PAN1026A is its ease of use. It integrates an on-chip antenna, a 26 MHz crystal, and EEPROM, and it uses a 32 kHz clock to conserve power during extended sleep periods. The module is based on Toshiba's TC35661-551, and the EEPROM stores the MAC address and can be used to store link keys. The module's provided with an easy to use SDK and high-level API commands to reduce development time. It has FCC, IC, and CE modular approval to reduce certification time and cost. It also has an embedded Bluetooth SIG certified stack, with support for BT basic rate serial port profile, as well as GATT and BLE services. The Cockrell School of Engineering's Fall 2012 Commencement ceremony was held Dec. 8 at the Frank Erwin Center. 299 undergraduate and 277 graduate students received their degrees. The commencement address was given by Dr. Hector de Jesus Ruiz. Dr. Hector de Jesus Ruiz, an accomplished engineer, corporate strategist and chief executive, has helped build and guide top-tier technology companies for nearly three decades. Ruiz, founder and CEO of Bull Ventures LLC and managing partner of Advanced Nanotechnology Solutions (ANS) Inc., began his career at Texas Instruments in the company's research laboratories and manufacturing operations. He went on to Motorola, where he rose from running a microchip manufacturing facility in Scotland to overseeing the firm's worldwide semiconductor operations. He then lead semiconductor research and development, ultimately becoming president of Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector. Ruiz joined AMD as president and COO in 2000, and was named CEO in 2002. At AMD, Ruiz set the strategic direction of the company, helping guide its growth from a small, broad supplier of components to an innovative technology solutions leader in the processor space. In 2006, he announced plans to build and operate the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility in the world in upstate New York, and in 2009 led an industry transformation by spinning out AMD's manufacturing assets to form GLOBALFOUNDRIES. During his tenure at AMD, Ruiz received numerous accolades, including: the Semico Bellwether Award [2009]; EE Times' Executive of the Year [2005]; Electronic Business' CEO of the Year [2005]; and Fortune magazine's Top 25 Business Leader [2006], among others. Throughout his career, Ruiz has promoted the use of technology to advance people's access to education and has pursued his vision of empowering people's lives by serving on various educational advisory boards and by carrying forward initiatives to accelerate affordable access to the internet, including AMD's 50x15 initiative. Ruiz holds a bachelor's and a master's degree in electrical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin's Cockrell School of Engineering, which he earned in 1968 and 1970, respectively. The 68000 microprocessor line was critical to emergence of the workstation class of computer systems as well as to Apple Computer's line of personal computers across the 1980s. Murray Goldman, the executive who lead this segment of Motorola, describes the background for and strategy surrounding the 68000 effort. Thomas Gunter, who directed the 68000 program, provides a detailed technical accounting of the developments. Meta Watch is a design and technology development company focused on reinventing the watch as a glanceable display for mobile devices and web services. Meta Watch is a spin-off of Fossil Inc.’s connected watch business, where Geiser served as the VP of Watch Technology. Geiser began focusing on wrist-based applications in 1994 when he founded Strokz Digital Sports, a company that developed watches for competitive swimmers and triathletes. Since then, Geiser has focused on connected watches functioning as glanceable displays for simplifying the mobile user experience. Rich Redelfs, General Partner Foundation Capital Rich joined Foundation Capital in 2004 with more than twenty years of start-up and corporate networking and communications experience. Previously, he was President and CEO of Atheros Communications, the leading Wi-Fi semiconductor supplier acquired by Qualcomm in 2011 for $3-billion. Prior to Atheros, Rich was VP and General Manager of 3Com’s Wireless and Home Connectivity Division where he pioneered home networking. In prior roles, Rich was COO of Polygon, a communications software start-up and TeleVideo Systems, an early leader in personal computers and networking. Rich currently serves on the boards of ACCO Semiconductor, Dust Networks, and Transphorm, and previously Mobius Microsystems (IDT), Prematics (NaviNet), SiBEAM (Silicon Image), Atheros Communications (Qualcomm), and Ventiva. He has a BSIE from Purdue and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
