So with that said, let’s discuss today’s question: Dr. Sam - I heard and read that masturbation can shrink your penis, is this true? I masturbate about 3-5x daily, sometimes as often as 7x daily. I’m worried. I don’t want my penis to shrink. Hell, I want it to get bigger. Anyway, what’s your thought? Growing up, I never thought that masturbation would shrink my penis. I mean, this was never even talked about with my buddies. But these days, I get asked this question a ton of times for some reason. So, here’s the truth - YES, masturbation can cause your penis to shrink. Actually, let me rephrase that, excessive masturbation can cause shrinkage. Of course, the next question is, what’s “excessive”? Well, 4-7x daily is a lot. In fact, if you’re masturbating that often, daily, every day - you need to get a job or something because you’ve got way too much time on your hands. And I’ve spoken about the “Negative Effects of Masturbation” in another video, which I’ll give you the direct link to that at the end of this video. Masturbation Is Normal and Healthy, But... Let’s get something straight before I continue - Masturbating is normal and healthy. Men and women do it. You’ve seen dogs hump your leg or a toy, they do it too. And, when you’re younger and have higher testosterone and optimal hormone levels, you’re hornier and will masturbate or have sex, more often. And with that said, I think 1-2x daily is plenty. What’s Excessive Masturbation? Now, another question you may be asking is “why or how does excessive masturbating cause penis shrinkage”? Well, it’s very similar to working out. Even though your penis is an organ consisting of spongy tissue, it still contains muscle tissue - more specifically, smooth muscle. Not the same as your bicep or chest muscle, which is called skeletal muscle. Needless to say, and even though it’s not “clinically proven”, you can most certainly grow your penis and at the same time, shrink it. TRUST ME ON THIS, growing your penis is very possible and it happens plenty of times. It’s been shown with lots of guys. And don’t even bother posting something below in the comments section arguing otherwise. Now, I’m not going to talk about penis GROWTH today. However, excessive masturbating call lower testosterone levels and create hormonal imbalances, which can cause penis shrinkage. If you masturbate or have sex 1-2 daily, it’s fine. But if you do it many times daily and thus, “excessively”, then you’ll have hormonal imbalances many times during the day, all of which, over time, can cause penis shrinkage. Additionally, just as LACK of use will cause shrinkage, so will OVER use. Just like going to the gym - you don’t want to under or over train, if your goal is maximum muscle growth. Remember, everything in the body requires stimulation and recuperation, if you want progress. Even your brain - you need to learn something new daily, read more, and so forth to continue to build new brain cells, synapsis and so forth. That’s the stimulation. While at the same time, you need proper sleep, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals to help the brain recuperate and thus, remember what was learned to prevent memory and cognitive problems. Yes, I’m simplifying it all - but I hope you get the point. So, stimulate your penis. Get erections. Do Kegel exercises. Have sex or masturbate. Have orgasms. Then, let it rest and recuperate. I guess like anything life, moderation is the key. Lastly, you may be wondering “well, how much will it shrink if I masturbate excessively”? I have no idea. Anecdotally, it’s not much. More girth than length. Maybe half an inch or so, maybe more if you’ve got more? But it’s not just about the shrinkage, it’s about having optimal hormone levels so you perform at your best, now and in the future. In this video lets address a question that has come up a few times. The question is “Will masturbation have an effect on my gains”. There is a general belief that masturbation makes you weak and less manly. If you ask people why they think masturbation makes you lose muscle, the scientific explanation provided for this goes as follows. After you masturbate your testosterone level goes down. Since testosterone is the main hormone responsible for muscle growth, if you masturbate too often your testosterone level is going to drop and you will lose muscle. In terms of theory this makes sense. Any sexual activity for a guy is followed by a period where he is not very interested in sex. Since sexual drive is also related to testosterone levels, we can infer (incorrectly though) that right after performing a sexual activity there is a drop in testosterone for men. So the more you masturbate, lower will be your testosterone level and hence lower is your muscle mass going to be. However one can argue the other way around also. Since your sexual drive depends on your testosterone levels, the guy who masturbates a lot must have higher inherent testosterone levels and therefore must have higher muscle mass. Moreover, performing strength training increases your testosterone levels and therefore strength training must boost your sexual drive and therefore the urge for masturbating. Going by this the guys who masturbate must have higher muscle mass. As you can see, things are more complicated and you can argue either way in terms of the relationship between masturbation and muscle mass. The reason people prefer to stick more to the lower muscle mass with masturbation is because of the stigma in our society in relation to sex. Masturbation is generally viewed negatively by the society and there are genuine reasons for that. Because of this negative stigma, most of us only think in terms of the potential negative effects masturbation might have on our muscle mass and completely miss the positive side of the argument. So, will masturbation kill your gains or not? The straightforward answer is no. However there are a few nuances that you should keep in mind. Scientific studies have looked at the effect on testosterone levels in males after a sexual activity. There is no conclusive evidence that there is a significant drop in testosterone levels after a sexual intercourse or masturbation. Some studies did not see any drop while others did see a drop in testosterone level after sexual activity. However this drop observed in some studies was only about 5-10% and only lasted for about half an hour to an hour after which testosterone levels returned to the baseline. Considering that muscle gain is a slow process, which happens over months and years a small drop in the testosterone level for half an hour will have very miniscule effect on your muscle gains. Moreover there are numerous other factors in our body, which affect testosterone levels besides masturbating. As an example your testosterone levels may drop from morning to night. When we place those factors in perspective we realize that any muscle loss due to masturbation will all be in the noise. You must be careful though, if you masturbate multiple times a day then this is definitely going to have an effect on your gains. And it is not just the testosterone levels that you need to worry about. Such a high frequency of masturbation means that you are addicted to masturbation. Such an addiction might negatively affect your daily life. Under such a situation you should definitely look for reducing your masturbation frequency. Well, this is a difficult question to answer because everyone has different needs due to age, hormones, etc. Some people told me they were masturbating daily, sometimes multiple times a day. Obviously, this is a young guy because someone in their 30’s and older isn’t doing it this often. They simply can’t due to the lack of optimal hormonal balance. Plus, they’re just too busy with life, more stress, more responsibilities, etc. Anyway, daily is too often as described in the original video. And I stated the negative reasons why, so please make sure you watch that video and there’s a link to that below, in the description area. However, just like working out, there needs to be a balance between activity and rest. Too much, too often, too long will always result in negative changes in your hormones and negative side-effects. So, my suggestion is to keep it simple and those of you who are “excessive masturbators”, reduce it 3x weekly or every-other-day. And I also define “excessive” in the original video Kegel Exercises On your “off days”, when you’re not masturbating, I suggest you do Kegel exercises. It’ll help improve erection strength, reduce erectile problems/dysfunctions and improve your “performance” in the bedroom. And, I have a detailed video about this topic on YouTube, as well. Maturbate, But Don’t Orgasm The other thing you can do on your “off days”, in addition to the Kegel exercises, is to maturbate, but do NOT have an orgasm. Masturbation will help increase your testosterone levels, without the negative hormonal changes; such as an increase in Prolactin, which happens after your orgasm. HOWEVER, you must NOT masturbate using any porn. Just close your eyes and use your mind. Be IN the moment. This will help improve your “mind-to-penis” connection and it’ll improve your performance in bed as well. This is similar to when you’re lifting weights … experienced lifters have learned to improve their “mind-to-muscle” connection, which results in better pumps, muscle growth and performance. Not “Excessive” And for those of you who aren’t “excessive masturbators”, who want to know how often you “should” masturbate, I think once a week is good enough. Now, this isn’t written in stone and see how you feel and maybe you can go even less often. But, once a week, IF you’re not having sex and having orgasms, is enough to “keep the pipes clean”, if you know what I mean?... For men, it helps increase your testosterone levels and reduce prostate problems, when it’s not done “excessively”. For women, it helps reduce menstrual pain and duration. Negatives Of Masturbation So, let’s move on to the “negatives” of masturbation and more specifically, EXCESSIVE masturbation. For example, men in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, who “frequently” masturbated 5X a week or more, has been linked to an INCREASE in prostate cancer for men.1 While the same amount done by men in their 50’s, REDUCED the risk of prostate cancer.1 Men who masturbate “excessively”, have less sensitivity during sex and take longer to climax.
