After suffering from years of drought, the Dead Sea is facing an "environmental disaster in slow motion". Scientists are warning the sea level is falling by as much as 1.5m (5ft) per year - meaning it could be a tiny pool by the middle of the century. The crisis has seen sinkholes open up and resorts close in what is currently a popular tourist attraction. Growing populations in the area also mean there is competition for water resources. Dr Ofir Katz, an ecologist at the Dead Sea and Arava Science Center, offered a word of caution: "We need to take care of nature or else we all sink with it." “And it shall come to pass in that day that living waters shall go out from Yerushalayim: half of them toward the eastern sea and half of them toward the western sea; in summer and in winter shall it be.” Zechariah 14:8 (The Israel Bible™) Then said he unto me: ‘These waters issue forth toward the eastern region and shall go down into the Arabah; and when they shall enter into the sea into the sea of the putrid waters the waters shall be healed. And it shall come to pass that every living creature wherewith it swarmeth whithersoever the rivers shall come shall live; and there shall be a very great multitude of fish; for these waters are come thither that all things be healed and may live whithersoever the river cometh. Ezekiel 47:8-9 (The Israel Bible) Almost ten times saltier than the ocean, nothing can live in the Dead Sea’s hyper-saline environment – Or so scientists thought until recently. Scientific research has proved the existence of life at the bottom of the sea, but due to a unique set of circumstances, signs of life have begun appearing on its very shores, precisely as it is written in the Book of Prophets in the Bible. A young woman on a nature hike was shocked recently when she discovered freshwater ponds with fish on the shores of the Dead Sea. Samantha Siegel, a Jewish woman living in Jerusalem, often takes trips to the desert and the ancient body of water. On a recent visit, she encountered an incongruous sight with powerful implications: a prophecy appearing before her eyes that seemed to contradict the laws of nature.... INSIDER'S A.C. Fowler heads to the Dead Sea in Israel. Is it worth the trip and a bucket list must, or is it a total travel nightmare? A.C. will rate it on how crowded it is, if the mud bath works, and how well you can float in the salty Dead Sea. The Dead Sea in Israel is actually not a sea. It's a lake, and it's bordered by Israel, the West Bank, and Jordan. It's fed by the Jordan River in the north. It's called "dead" because no life can be sustained in the water because of its high salt content. At 10 times more than any other sea in the world, the high salt content means you can't sink in the water. About 1.74 million tourists and locals visit the Dead Sea a year. Spring and fall are usually the best times of the year to visit the Dead Sea due to the milder weather. The average temperature near the Dead Sea is about 80 °F (26.6 °C). At the Dead Sea, there are natural mud deposits, and the mud is supposed to be really good for your skin. The same minerals in the mud are also in the water. Dermatologist Marisa Garshick explains that it's not just the quantity of the salt in the Dead Sea, but it's actually the type of salt that is found. The Dead Sea has a lot of magnesium, bromide, calcium, and potassium, and these elements may have true benefits for the skin. ------------------------------------------------------ #Israel #DeadSea #INSIDER INSIDER is great journalism about what passionate people actually want to know. Search and rescue efforts are continuing in Jordan after flash floods killed 21 people - most of the victims were children. A school trip was originally scheduled for a different area of the country and it was not immediately clear why the trip had been moved to an area for which a warning had been issued. Nearly 2,000 military rescuers are searching the shores of Jordan’s Dead Sea resort area. The Dead Sea has already lost more than one third of its surface area over the years. The water level is currently dropping by over 1 meter every year and its shoreline is expected to drop from 411 meters to 430 meters below sea level by 2020, according to the environmentalist group EcoPeace Middle East. Traditionally, the Jordan River is the Dead Sea’s inflow source. However, 50 years ago it was diverted to supply cities, reducing the water inflow level to the Dead Sea to just 5% of its original volume. The hot and dry climate of the region makes it difficult for the Dead Sea to restore itself. That added to the rapid loss of water has resulted in the increased salinity of the lake. The group also points out that the Dead Sea is threatened by cosmetic companies that extract mineral water from the region to make beauty products. Hotels and attractions built along the shoreline also release untreated sewage into the Dead Sea. Even though the Dead Sea does not have any wildlife in itself, the region around it is known for supporting several endangered species such as ibexes, leopards and the indigenous Dead Sea Sparrow. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Animation Studio’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D news animations that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. Once a tourist attraction and one of the world's first health resorts, the Dead Sea is receding at an alarming rate. Multiple canals and pipelines were proposed to reduce its recession. And though the dangers have been known for years, little has been done on the ground. Some say it could be too late. Let's get started with this report by Maya Margit, on one of the major environmental problems caused by the decline of the Dead Sea - the creation of sinkholes. The Dead Sea also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordering Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. Its surface and shores are 423 metres (1,388 ft) below sea level, Earth’s lowest elevation on land. The Dead Sea is 377 m (1,237 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With 33.7% salinity, it is also one of the world’s saltiest bodies of water, though Lake Assal (Djibouti), Garabogazköl and some hypersaline lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica (such as Don Juan Pond) have reported higher salinities. It is 8.6 times saltier than the ocean. This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which animals cannot flourish, hence its name. The Dead Sea is 67 kilometres (42 mi) long and 18 kilometres (11 mi) wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River.

Excavations in a cave on the cliffs west of Qumran, near the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea, prove that Dead Sea scrolls from the Second Temple period were hidden in the cave, and were looted by Bedouins in the middle of the last century. With the discovery of this cave, scholars now suggest that it should be numbered as Cave 12. Israeli scholars have pieced together and deciphered one of two previously unread manuscripts of the Dead Sea Scrolls more than half a century since their discovery. The 60 or more tiny fragments of parchment bearing encrypted Hebrew writing had previously been thought to come from a variety of different scrolls. But now academics have found the pieces all fit together to make just one scroll. The document makes reference to a unique 364-day calendar and a festival that marks the changing of the seasons celebrated by an ancient, celibate Jewish sect.WHAT DOES IT SAY? The latest deciphered scroll contains references to the 364-day calendar used by the sect, as opposed to the lunar calendar used in Jewish religious practice today. The scroll identifies the name of a festival that celebrates the changing of the seasons. The festivals included New Wheat, New Wine and New Oil, which are related to the Jewish festival Shavout and no longer observed in Judaism. Researchers also identified a festival observed four times a year called Tekufah - which means 'period' in modern-day Hebrew and marks the transition between the seasons. Annotations in the margin from a scribe correcting the author's original work helped them decipher its meaning. Many experts believe the manuscripts of the Dead Sea were written by the celibate Essenes, a dissident Jewish sect that had retreated into the Judaean desert around Qumran and its caves. The Dead Sea Scrolls have fascinated scholars and historians since the ancient texts were found around 70 years ago scattered within a series of caves in the West Bank.Eshbal Ratson and Jonathan Ben-Dov from the University of Haifa's Bible studies department found the pieces all fit together after they started examining them just under a year ago. Some of the fragments they had to decipher were smaller than 1cm² (0.15 inch²).'They put it all together and said it was actually one scroll,' said Ilan Yavelberg a university spokesman.A Haifa University statement said that Ratson and Ben-Dov were now working on deciphering the last remaining scroll. Many experts believe the manuscripts of the Dead Sea were written by the celibate Essenes, a dissident Jewish sect that had retreated into the Judaean desert around Qumran and its caves. The theory says the group either wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls or were caretakers of the legal, philosophical and religious documents. The latest deciphered scroll contains references to the 364-day calendar used by the sect, as opposed to the lunar calendar used in Jewish religious practice today. The scroll also identifies the name of a festival that celebrates the changing of the seasons. The festivals included New Wheat, New Wine and New Oil, which are related to the Jewish festival Shavout and no longer observed in Judaism, writes BBC.Researchers also identified a festival observed four times a year called Tekufah - which means 'period' in modern-day Hebrew and marks the transition between the seasons. The parchment a AutoNews- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-5297167/Israeli-scholars-decipher-Dead-Sea-Scroll.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Environmentalists in Jordan are warning that the Dead Sea will disappear by the year 2050 if its level continues to drop at the current rate. Climate change and increasing water usage has caused the Dead Sea to shrink by a third over the last 50 years. Bordering Israel, Jordan and the occupied Palestinian territories, the sea is receding by more than a metre each year. While experts are assessing how best to save it from disappearing altogether, the exposure of new land uncovered by the receding coastline has led to growing friction over who owns the landmark. Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley reports on the claim that the Dead Sea is now "dying" as the water that used to feed it is diverted for industry, agriculture and domestic use in both Israel and Jordan.

A US Bible museum has removed fragments of. what it believed were part of the Dead Sea Scrolls from display, after tests suggested they were forgeries. The Museum of the Bible, in Washington DC, sent five of its 16 fragments for analysis in Germany. But results showed characteristics inconsistent with ancient origin, the museum said. Costing $500m , the museum was opened by Evangelical Christian. and billionaire Steve Green in 2017. The Dead Sea Scrolls are a set of ancient manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible. The first of the scrolls were found in caves in Qumran. on the western shore of the Dead Sea in 1947. They were reportedly first discovered by. a young Bedouin shepherd searching for lost sheep. The tests were ordered after biblical scholars. who examined 13 of the museum's previously unstudied fragments said. there was a high probability that a number of them were modern forgeries. The museum's chief curatorial officer, Jeffrey Kloha, said that he had hoped the "testing would render different results". However, he added: "This is an opportunity to educate the public on the importance of verifying the authenticity of rare biblical artefacts, the elaborate testing process undertaken and our commitment to transparency," It is not the first time the museum's owners have faced controversy. Last year, Mr Green's company the Hobby Lobby paid a $3m fine and returned thousands of items after the US Department of Justice accused it of smuggling artefacts from Iraq. Dead Sea Scrolls are ancient Jewish religious, mostly Hebrew, manuscripts found in the Qumran Caves in the West Bank near the Dead Sea. Many thousands of written fragments have been discovered in the Dead Sea area. They represent the remnants of larger manuscripts damaged by natural causes or through human interference, with the vast majority only holding small scraps of text. However, a small number of well-preserved, almost intact manuscripts have survived – fewer than a dozen among those from the Qumran Caves. Researchers have assembled a collection of some 981 different manuscripts – discovered in 1946/47 and in 1956 – from 11 caves. The 11 Qumran Caves lie in the immediate vicinity of the Hellenistic-period Jewish settlement at Khirbet Qumran in the eastern Judaean Desert, in the West Bank. The caves are located about one mile west of the northwest shore of the Dead Sea, whence they derive their name. Scholarly consensus dates the Qumran Caves Scrolls from the. last three centuries BCE and from the first century CE. Bronze coins found at the same sites form a series beginning with. John Hyrcanus and continuing until the period of the First Jewish–Roman War , supporting the radiocarbon and paleographic dating of the scrolls.

The Dead Sea, bordering the Middle Eastern countries of Israel and Jordan, and the Palestine territories, is reportedly losing water, with the surface receding at the rate of around three feet annually, due to irrigation water taken out of its tributary, the River Jordan. The Dead Sea, bordering the Middle Eastern countries of Israel and Jordan, and the Palestine territories, is reportedly losing water, with the surface receding at the rate of around three feet annually, due to irrigation water taken out of its tributary, the River Jordan. An agreement has been signed by officials from Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority in an effort to save the Dead Sea from disappearing by bringing water from the Red Sea to a desalination plant in Jordan and piping the resulting brine to the Dead Sea. Hydroelectric energy will be used to power the desalination process that will also provide drinking water for the area. The deal was signed at the World Bank headquarters in Washington D.C. with a projected cost of between 250 and 400 million dollars. The Dead Sea not only provides water for the area, but is also popular with the health and tourism industry thanks to its unique mineral properties. These industries are threatened by the loss of water, which some estimates say could disappear by 2050. However, environmental advocacy groups are also concerned over the possible effects of the brine on the area's fragile ecosystem. What do you think about the plan to bring brine from the Red Sea to restore the Dead Sea' s water level?
