If you like this video, please support these film preservation charities: The British Film Institute, https://goo.gl/iwTkD7 The George Eastman Museum, http://eastman.org/donate The Film Foundation, http://www.film-foundation.org/donation My inspiration came from What's the Mashup? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmnSm_d2ll4) but I didn't manage 100! The idea was to do the same for movies from the Golden Age – meaning no title later than 1953 (although there is one at the end.) Oh, and none of these clips was sped up or slowed down. If you like the clips, go buy the movies on DVD! And the song on Google Play or iTunes! And thanks also to IMDB, clipconverter.cc and Nero Video. Turn on subtitles to find out the film names. PS. I write books as well. Here's two very reasonably priced ones about movies: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Light-Affliction-History-Preservation-Restoration-ebook/dp/B00PDTJCZM/ref=tmm_kin_title_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1445792900&sr=8-1 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Halliwells-Horizon-Leslie-Halliwell-Guides-ebook/dp/B005CYFWKW/ref=sr_1_1_twi_kin_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1445792934&sr=8-1&keywords=halliwell%27s+horizon

Charlie Chaplin Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, KBE (16 April 1889 -- 25 December 1977), known as Charlie Chaplin, was an English comic actor and film director of the silent film era. He became one of the best-known film stars in the world before the end of the First World War. Chaplin used mime, slapstick and other visual comedy routines, and continued well into the era of the talkies, though his films decreased in frequency from the end of the 1920s. His most famous role was that of The Tramp, which he first played in the Keystone comedy Kid Auto Races at Venice in 1914. Chaplin was one of the most creative and influential personalities of the silent-film era. He was influenced by his predecessor, the French silent movie comedian Max Linder, to whom he dedicated one of his films. Chalie Chaplin The lion's Cage (Original Scene)

Clip taken from a 1938 short called "How Walt Disney Cartoons Are Made". I have simply taken out a lot of the footage devoted to publicising the Film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". I have done this not because I dislike the film (it is infact one of my all time favourites) but to make it short to show in class.

It’s not quite British, and it’s not quite American – so what gives? Why do all those actors of yesteryear have such a distinct and strange accent? Learn more at HowStuffWorks.com: http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/movies-film-channel.htm Share on Facebook: http://goo.gl/1j6yim Share on Twitter: http://goo.gl/4FoAQy Subscribe: http://goo.gl/ZYI7Gt Visit our site: http://www.brainstuffshow.com If you’ve ever heard old movies or newsreels from the thirties or forties, then you’ve probably heard that weird old-timey voice. It sounds a little like a blend between American English and a form of British English. So what is this cadence, exactly? This type of pronunciation is called the Transatlantic, or Mid-Atlantic, accent. And it isn’t like most other accents – instead of naturally evolving, the Transatlantic accent was acquired. This means that people in the United States were taught to speak in this voice. Historically Transatlantic speech was the hallmark of aristocratic America and theatre. In upper-class boarding schools across New England, students learned the Transatlantic accent as an international norm for communication, similar to the way posh British society used Received Pronunciation – essentially, the way the Queen and aristocrats are taught to speak. It has several quasi-British elements, such a lack of rhoticity. This means that Mid-Atlantic speakers dropped their “r’s” at the end of words like “winner” or “clear”. They’ll also use softer, British vowels – “dahnce” instead of “dance”, for instance. Another thing that stands out is the emphasis on clipped, sharp t’s. In American English we often pronounce the “t” in words like “writer” and “water” as d’s. Transatlantic speakers will hit that T like it stole something. “Writer.” “Water.” But, again, this speech pattern isn’t completely British, nor completely American. Instead, it’s a form of English that’s hard to place… and that’s part of why Hollywood loved it. There’s also a theory that technological constraints helped Mid-Atlantic’s popularity. According to Professor Jay O’Berski, this nasally, clipped pronunciation is a vestige from the early days of radio. Receivers had very little bass technology at the time, and it was very difficult – if not impossible – to hear bass tones on your home device. Now we live in an age where bass technology is booms from the trunks of cars across America. So what happened to this accent? Linguist William Labov notes that Mid-Atlantic speech fell out of favor after World War II, as fewer teachers continued teaching the pronunciation to their students. That’s one of the reasons this speech sounds so ‘old-timey’ to us today: when people learn it, they’re usually learning it for acting purposes, rather than for everyday use. However, we can still hear the effects of Mid-Atlantic speech in recordings of everyone from Katherine Hepburn to Franklin D. Roosevelt and, of course, countless films, newsreels and radio shows from the 30s and 40s. (11 Jul 2012) STORYLINE Seoul's last old-style, one-screen cinema, soon to be knocked down and replaced by a tourist hotel, played its final movie on Wednesday, the Italian classic "The Bicycle Thief", a moment so emotional for the theatre operator that she publicly shaved her head in an act of penitence. The theatre, which opened in 1964, has become a place where mostly elderly cinemagoers gather regularly to watch classic Hollywood and South Korean films and indulge in nostalgia for cinematic days-gone-by. As huge multiplexes made it hard to compete financially, the Seodaemun Art Hall played up the one thing the newer theatres could never match, its age. But the theatre's attempt to keep business alive based on that shared joy of nostalgia and a sense of community among its elderly patrons came to an end on Wednesday. "I thought I have to apologise to those elders for not securing their culture not only by words but also by action," Kim Eun-ju, 39, the head of theatre Hollywood Classic, said before shaving her head. The building venerates Hollywood royalty, with a hand-painted advertising board over the theatre and big photos of American movie stars like James Dean, Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor hanging on the walls. Still, it also has a distinctly South Korean feel: no popcorn is sold here; only rice cakes favoured by many elderly Koreans. This glorification of the past is increasingly hard to find in the hustle and bustle of ultramodern Seoul, where older neighbourhoods disappear constantly, replaced with construction sites throwing up gleaming glass and steel apartments, hotels and office buildings. Seoul officials approved plans to demolish the theatre as early as August to build a high-rise hotel, hoping to create jobs and resolve a shortage of hotel rooms for foreign tourists. Seoul-based Glotel, the landlord of the theatre building, declined to comment. The theatre's end has been hard to take for many of the workers and people who regularly watched movies here, hundreds of whom came on Wednesday to watch Italian director Vittorio De Sica's 1948 classic. Most were in their 60s to 80s, and many expressed sadness. After the movie ended, Kim Eun-ju, the theatre operator, had her head shaved before cinemagoers and reporters packing the theatre hall. Several volunteer theatre workers cried and embraced Kim after most of her hair was gone, shouting "Stop it! Stop it!" Kim's company has been operating at a loss because of low-priced tickets that cost only 2,000 won (1.80 US dollars), nearly one fourth what regular movie tickets cost. The 2014 film was an animation feat — but it was built on the legacy of homemade fan movies. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO When you watch installments of the Warner Bros. line of Lego movies, it's hard not to be struck by how realistic the animation is. It isn't quite traditional stop motion — but it sure looks as if it could be. That's largely thanks to the work of the animators at Animal Logic, a Sydney-based visual effects studio that has worked on The Lego Movie, The Lego Batman Movie, and the upcoming The Lego Ninjago Movie. Powered by live action filming techniques and a close attention to detail, the studio has helped reinvent what Lego animations can look like. But they owe a lot of that aesthetic to the influence of fan films. Since the early 1970s, enthusiasts have made home movies with their own Lego sets. They're called Brickfilms — and they've grown into a sizable community producing great movies and helping many young animators get their start. The Lego Movie animators learned from what made those home movies so good by embracing the limitations of the medium, and creating a world that anyone could could rebuild at home. In the 1920s and into the 1950s, Hollywood had a particular way of talking. It was called the Midatlantic or the Transatlantic accent. But we don't speak like that anymore. The accent was acquired, so there's no line tracing it back through history — but we gave it a try. It was designed to protect the head and hands, the two vital parts of the competing fighters. Whether you've seen it used in movies like Snatch or Gangs of New York, or just recognize it from the Notre Dame football mascot, it's a symbol of combat sports history, and the evolution of martial arts. Here's a quick tutorial using two great presets in Adobe Audition to create that vintage voice over sound. The first effect is 'Old Time Radio' and the second is the 'On Hold EQ' effect with a little vinyl crackle, hiss and pop for extra authenticity! As requested, here's a link to the vinyl noise I used: http://www.freesound.org/people/dayvo... This work is licensed under the Creative Commons 0 License.

If you're not familiar with Film Noir (noir is the French word for black or dark), here's some information from Wikipedia: "Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly such that emphasize cynical attitudes and romantic motivations. Hollywood's classical film noir period is generally regarded as extending from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography. Many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Great Depression. The term film noir, French for "black film" (literal) or "dark film" (closer meaning), first applied to Hollywood films by French critic Nino Frank in 1946. Film noir encompasses a range of plots: the central figure may be a private investigator (The Big Sleep), a plainclothes policeman (The Big Heat), an aging boxer (The Set-Up), a hapless grifter (Night and the City), a law-abiding citizen lured into a life of crime, or simply a victim of circumstance (D.O.A.). Film noir is also known for its use of low-angle, wide-angle, and skewed, or Dutch angle shots. Other devices of disorientation relatively common in film noir include shots of people reflected in one or more mirrors, shots through curved or frosted glass or other distorting objects (such as during the strangulation scene in Strangers on a Train), and special effects sequences of a sometimes bizarre nature."
