200G for the long haul

01:49
Learn more about Nokia’s 200G long haul solution in the Double long-haul and ultra-long-haul capacity in our Super Coherent Technology brochure: http://nokia.ly/1XoIyo8 (PDF) For more product information, visit: http://networks.nokia.com/portfolio/p... As a network operator, you’re constantly thinking about how you can grow network capacity to support ever increasing bandwidth demands, and to do so economically. And now that 100G is seen as a common service request from customers – not just a line rate – you need to consider how to transport those services over higher capacity wavelengths, with the reach to address not just metro, but also long haul requirements. And that’s exactly what Nokia’s new Photonic Service Engine 2 Super Coherent digital signal processor is designed to support. One of the new and unique wavelength options supported by the PSE-2 is the 8QAM 200G modulation format. By combining high order modulation and high baud rate transmission, Nokia’s 8QAM brings true long haul performance to 200G wavelengths – up to 2000 km. With that kind of reach, you can economically build an entire long haul network, almost entirely 200G wavelengths! Compared to building long haul networks with 100G, or alternative 8 QAM solutions running at 150G, Nokia’s 200G 8 QAM uses fewer line cards, is more spectrally efficient, and ultimately results in the lowest cost per bit per kilometer. As a bonus, 200G aligns better with the 100G transport services your customers are starting to demand.

Super coherent technology – optimizing wavelength capacity and reach

03:19
Download our new White Paper to learn more: Maximize network capacity with Nokia Super Coherent Technologies http://nokia.ly/1OvGDpD For more product information, visit: http://networks.nokia.com/portfolio/p... Super Coherent technology is at the heart of our next generation Photonic Service Engine, the world’s most advanced coherent digital signal processor. So what exactly is super coherent? Super Coherent consists of four unique technologies which the PSE-2 combines in different ways to achieve performance and flexibility. The first is variable modulation. Modulation translates digital bits into analog symbols. The amount of bits that we fit into one symbol that is transmitted determines the balance of capacity on one hand, and reach on the other that a DWDM interface is capable of. The PSE-2s is capable of different modulation formats to give you not just extended distances or high bandwidth, but a tremendous amount of granularity in between to meet your specific network requirements. The second super coherent technique is adjustable baud rate, which is the rate at which the symbols of a particular modulation format are transmitted onto the fiber. The PSE-2 is built with a state-of-the-art silicon process, which allows it to operate at rates up to 44 gigabaud. A higher baud rate – in combination with other super coherent techniques - enables both longer reaches and higher capacity than would be possible with today’s systems operating at lower baud rates. The third super coherent technology is advanced coding. Coding involves the digital manipulation of the bit stream, and the application of sophisticated algorithms that increase the performance of a DWDM wavelength. For the PSE-2, this includes a second generation soft decision forward error correction with 25% overhead that provides more coding gain than previous generations. The PSE-2 also implements two types of phase recovery, one that’s optimized for coherent only network and another that is optimal for coherent networks with some 10G direct detect 10G wavelengths. And the fourth technology component in our super coherent toolkit is transmit filtering and the ability to form multi-carrier super channels. The PSE-2 actually supports the transmission of two carriers from a single chip. Each of these carriers can be routed independently through the network, even with different modulation formats. But these carriers can also be tightly spaced, and routed as a single entity through the DWDM network, resulting in greater spectral efficiency, and higher network capacity. Super coherent is a collection of technologies enabled by cutting edge Nokia-designed silicon that allows operators to choose among high capacity, extended reach, or an optimal balance of the two to meet specific network applications.

[SLUSH 2014] Nokia Announces N1 Android Tablet

02:07
Simplicity and design at the heart of Nokia's first brand-licensed product Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced the N1, the first Nokia-branded AndroidTM tablet. The N1 offers the innovative, predictive Nokia Z Launcher interface, and a carefully crafted industrial design by Nokia with a focus on simplicity. The N1 will be brought to market in Q1 2015 through a brand-licensing agreement with an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partner responsible for manufacturing, distribution and sales. "We are pleased to bring the Nokia brand back into consumers' hands with the N1 Android tablet, and to help make sophisticated technologies simple," said Sebastian Nyström, Head of Products at Nokia Technologies, who announced the N1 at the Slush technology conference in Helsinki. "The N1 has a delightfully intuitive interface and an industrial design to match it. This is a great product for Nokia fans and everyone who has not found the right Android tablet yet." Consumers use and manage a large set of applications in their digital lives. The N1 makes that easy with the Z Launcher, which allows users to scribble a letter or two to find their content quickly. Over time the Z Launcher learns what applications are in use, and predicts and highlights the applications consumers are expected to want based on time of day and location. The industrial design of the N1 is deliberately developed to match the elegant simplicity of the interface. It has a unique one-piece aluminum design with a soft finish in both Lava Grey and Natural Aluminum colors that make it stand out from other tablets. The 7.9" laminated display sits in a 6.9mm thin and light design that makes the device comfortable to hold even with one hand. A 2.4Ghz Intel© AtomTM quad-core processor provides great performance for the Android Lollipop operating system on the N1. The N1 is planned to be available for purchase in China in Q1 2015 for an estimated USD 249 before taxes, with the anticipation of expanding sales to other markets. In addition to the Nokia brand, Nokia is licensing the industrial design, Z Launcher software layer and IP on a running royalty basis to the OEM partner. The OEM partner is responsible for full business execution, from engineering and sales to customer care, including liabilities and warranty costs, inbound IP and software licensing and contractual agreements with 3rd parties. The N1's industrial design and Z Launcher application originate within the Nokia Technologies business, which is focused on strengthening Nokia's industry-leading innovation portfolio through patent, technology and brand licensing.

Jim Cramer on Nokia, Chipotle and Twitter

11:04
SUBSCRIBE | http://t.st/TheStreetTV BB&T and SunTrust are Merging BB&T and SunTrust Banks unveiled a $66 billion all-stock merger Thursday that would create the sixth-biggest commercial bank in the United States, TheStreet's Martin Baccardax reported. https://www.thestreet.com/investing/stocks/bb-t-and-sunttrust-agree-66-billion-merger-to-create-6th-biggest-u-s-bank-14858309 SunTrust said the deal would create a company with $442 billion in assets, as well as $324 billion in deposits with a customer base of around 10 million American household. The all-stock deal will see SunTrust investors receiving 1.295 shares of BB&T for each stock they own, as well as a 5% increase in their dividend, with BB&T owning 57% of the combined group's $28.24 billion in equity to 43% for SunTrust. "This is a true merger of equals, combining the best of both companies to create the premier financial institution of the future," said BB&T CEO Kelly King. "It's an extraordinarily attractive financial proposition that provides the scale needed to compete and win in the rapidly evolving world of financial services. Together with Bill's leadership and our new SunTrust teammates, we're going to bring the best of both companies forward to serve our clients and communities." So, what does this mean for the banking sector? Jim Cramer explains Remember Nokia? Cramer noted that he hasn't been able to recommend Nokia shares since 1997, but now that the stock has an attractive valuation, and a stronger end-to-end portfolio of solutions, he thinks there's upside potential if Europe follows the U.S. lead on shutting the door to Huawei and ZTE in 5G markets, Baccardax wrote. "For years Nokia and Ericsson have been steamrolled by Huawei and ZTE," Cramer told his Mad Money audience on CNBC last night. "That's over. The U.S. government is doing everything it can to keep these companies out of 5G networks, not just here, but worldwide and that is a huge opportunity for Nokia and Ericsson." "I bet both stocks will get more attractive as our government keeps ratcheting up the pressure on allies to not use anything from these Chinese companies," Cramer said. Cramer further breaks down why investors should care about the company behind the indestructible flip phones. https://www.thestreet.com/investing/stocks/nokia-shares-dip-after-france-rejects-move-to-tighten-rules-on-5g-providers-14858250 Chipotle's Comeback Cramer wrote about Chipotle for his morning column over on Real Money. "Chipotle's back -- and it is back right on time. That's right, the company reported fantastic numbers Wednesday night, a colossal 6.1% comparable-sales number, coupled with healthy margins, including the persnickety labor costs that have bedeviled all fast food outlets these last few months," he wrote. Here's Cramer's explanation on Chipotle and what he's watching in other food chains. https://realmoney.thestreet.com/investing/stocks/jim-cramer-this-comeback-in-chipotle-is-right-on-time-14858426 Twitter Slumps Twitter posted stronger-than-expected fourth quarter earnings Thursday as the micro-blogging website held user growth but said expenses would rise notably this year as it moved to protect the integrity of its platform, reported Baccardax. Looking into 2019, Twitter said it sees first quarter revenue in the region of $715 to $775 million, essentially in-line with the Refinitiv forecast of $765 million. Twitter also said GAAP and cash operating expenses would rise by 20% from last year, to a range of $550 million to $600 million, "as we support our existing priorities of health, conversation, revenue product and sales, and platform." Twitter said the average of daily active users that the company can monetize on its platform rose 9% to 126 million, helped by an 11% gain in international users to 99 million. https://www.thestreet.com/investing/earnings/twitter-tops-q4-earnings-estimate-but-guides-for-sharp-2019-spending-increase-14858266 SUBSCRIBE | http://t.st/TheStreetTV MORE VIDEOS: https://www.thestreet.com/video ACTION ALERTS PLUS | https://secure2.thestreet.com/cap/prm.do?OID=039029 RETIREMENT DAILY |https://secure2.thestreet.com/cap/prm.do?OID=039031 REAL MONEY PRO | https://secure2.thestreet.com/cap/prm.do?OID=039030 FACEBOOK | https://www.facebook.com/TheStreet/ TWITTER | http://twitter.com/thestreet PODCASTS | https://soundcloud.com/thestreetlive THESTREET.COM | https://www.thestreet.com/ LINKEDIN | http://linkedin.com/company/theStreet INSTAGRAM | https://www.instagram.com/thestreet/?... RECENSIONE Nokia 2: PECCATO!

05:48
Nokia Mobile Fronthaul

02:44
Learn more about Nokia’s mobile fronthaul solution: http://networks.nokia.com/portfolio/solutions/fronthaul The Nokia Mobile Fronthaul solution provides operators with greater capacity, performance and flexibility in delivering low latency transport of CPRI/OBSAI data enabling the transition to Centralized RAN. The solution makes fronthaul operationally viable and cost-effective to deploy at scale. Mobile data traffic growth is doubling annually. This has operators modernizing their mobile networks by turning to centralized RAN architectures. A centralized RAN can deliver significant Opex and Capex savings of up to 50% and 30% respectively. This is accomplished in 2 ways: - It reduces equipment at cell sites -- which will save both space and power costs. - And it moves the baseband processing to a centralized hub. This enables the pooling of network resources and improved performance of LTE and LTE-A features like CoMP and eICIC. This in turn, results in improved spectrum utilization and better services. While needed, centralized RAN architectures have been cost prohibitive to deploy and hard to scale. This is because up to now, deployments have focused on point to point fiber connections to each radio, making it fiber intensive and costly. Furthermore, upgrades to RAN equipment and processes have led to high deployment costs. Nokia’s Mobile Fronthaul solution addresses these challenges by introducing new products that enable a cost effective transition to centralized RAN while significantly expanding fiber capacity and reducing Capex/Opex. The solution eliminates the need for RAN upgrades to make the optics WDM compatible. UnleashTV Episode 85: The One where Microsoft Killed Nokia

49:09
In this week's episode of UnleashTV, we just have one topic! Microsoft moves to take control of the Nokia acquisition; significant layoffs (50% of ex-Nokia employees) and change in product strategy. The Unleash Team discuss what exactly seems to be happening at Microsoft's Devices division as well as the many implications of these events. Satya Nadella's Memo | Microsoft cuts 12,500 jobs from Nokia Devices and Services With this in mind, we will begin to reduce the size of our overall workforce by up to 18,000 jobs in the next year. Of that total, our work toward synergies and strategic alignment on Nokia Devices and Services is expected to account for about 12,500 jobs, comprising both professional and factory workers. The first-party phone portfolio will align to Microsoft's strategic direction. To win in the higher price tiers, we will focus on breakthrough innovation that expresses and enlivens Microsoft's digital work and digital life experiences. We plan to shift select Nokia X product designs to become Lumia products running Windows. This builds on our success in the affordable smartphone space and aligns with our focus on Windows Universal Apps. Stephen Elop's Memo We are the team creating the hardware that showcases the finest of Microsoft's digital work and digital life experiences, and we will be the confluence of the best of Microsoft's applications, operating systems and cloud services. Whereas the hardware business of phones within Nokia was an end unto itself, within Microsoft all our devices are intended to embody the finest of Microsoft's digital work and digital life experiences, while accruing value to Microsoft's overall strategy. In the near term, we plan to drive Windows Phone volume by targeting the more affordable smartphone segments, which are the fastest growing segments of the market, with Lumia.  We plan to right-size our manufacturing operations to align to the new strategy and take advantage of integration opportunities. Jo Harlow's Memo | Microsoft looking to sell-off Nokia MixRadio business; Microsoft killing off Nokia X series of Android phones; Microsoft killing off Nokia Asha & S40 feature phones to push Windows Phones Development and investment for Asha, Series 40, and Nokia X handsets will shift to what is described as "maintenance mode," and services to support existing devices will be shut down over the next 18 months. "This means there will be no new features or updates to services on any mobile phones platform as a result of these plans." Whereas successful hardware was the goal at Nokia; delighting our customers with Microsoft platforms, services, and applications through our hardware is our goal at Microsoft Microsoft is also planning to offer Nokia MixRadio as a third-party service. The software maker is considering options to spin off the service, and has initiated discussions with "strong interest" from third parties. Until MixRadio is sold, it has also been moved into maintenance mode. For summary: Half of ex-Nokia staffers to be let go Manufacturing assets to be dramatically downsized; product development to be concentrated in two offices - the scale that Nokia used to have is all but gone Devices unit to focus on low-end Windows Phones just like every other Windows Phone OEM Nokia X is dead after 7 months from initial announcement; app development programmes to cease and no new features or significant software upgrades as the product line goes into maintenance mode for 18mths  Nokia Asha and S40 is dead; the hope is gone Mix Radio's future is uncertain; there goes one of the brightest spots of the Lumia experience and the only other component of Ovi that has managed to survive up till now

Nokia 2 will get Android Oreo 8.1 and Android Go improvements

02:12
Nokia 2 to Get Android 8.1 Oreo Update Directly, HMD Global Confirms Music Credit: "Music: www.bensound.com" After bringing the latest Android experience to the flagship Nokia 8, HMD Global is now set to directly provide Android 8.1 Oreo to Nokia 2. The handset was launched in October with Android 7.1 Nougat. It comes with an "average global price" of EUR 99 (approximately Rs. 7,600), and arrived in India late last month at Rs. 6,999. HMD Global Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas in a tweet on Thursday confirmed the Nokia 2 will receive Android 8.1 Oreo. Sarvikas also suggested that the cheapest Nokia smartphone will receive some memory management improvements from Google's Android Go programme that was announced earlier this year and recently rumoured to debut on Nokia 1 sometime in March. "1GB RAM devices will be supported on 8.1 release where many of the Android Go memory management improvements will be integrated. Nokia 2 performance will only get better over time!" the executive tweeted. HMD started the process of releasing Android 8.0 Oreo update for its smartphone portfolio with the Nokia 8 in November. Following the release of Android Oreo for the top-end Nokia smartphone, the Finnish company announced Android 8.0 Oreo beta builds for the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6. Both the mid-range Nokia phones received Android 8.0 Oreo beta build earlier this month. Further, the company is set to seed Android Oreo to Nokia 3 by skipping a due Android 7.1.2 update. It is worth noting here that HMD previously planned to bring Android 8.0 Oreo to its Nokia smartphone range, and the Nokia 2 is its first model to receive Android 8.1 that was launched just earlier this month for Google Pixel and Nexus devices. Sarvikas' tweet didn't reveal by when can we expect the new experience. However, it is quite presumable that the company would bring the update sometime early next year. The Android Nougat-running Nokia 2 features a 5-inch LTPS HD (720x1280 pixels) display. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 SoC with four cores of ARM Cortex-A7 CPU at 1.3GHz, coupled 1GB of RAM. The smartphone has an 8-megapixel rear camera sensor with an LED flash and a 5-megapixel front camera sensor. It packs a 4000mAh non-removable battery that is claimed to deliver two days of power on a single charge.
