Rare Videos by Javier Vargas TV!
With thanks to Adeyto, Bogdan Kurilko, Iogkf Ua and BlakeBros for their permission to use material from their respective channels in the making of this short-video. After reading some of the comments, I wish to elaborate the following: Okinawan karate (Before it was introduced to Japan) had a lot of joint-locks throws, take-downs and ground-fighting (Though not as extensive as Modern Jujitsu), these are apparent in our KATA. To those who are not familiar with the history of Okinawan Karate, when Chojun Miyagi (the founder of Goju) demonstrated his karate before Judo's founder Kano Jigoro in 1928 (?) what did Jigoro compliment the young Miyagi Sensei for ? For his interesting Ne-waza. Jigoro also incorporated a throw he saw Kenwa Mabuni Sensei perform (Founder of Shitoryu) and a takedown from Funakoshi Sensei into his Judo Syllabus.
When Karate was first introduced into Japan, it was lumped under the Jujitsu department within the Dai-Nippon Butoku-kai as a SUB-CATEGORY, one can deduce that it is because they were so similar. Since every student learnt Jujitsu and Judo as part of their physical education in schools anyway, karate was seen as a sort of a redundancy. The karate masters had to do something to become independent -so they decided to emphasize on the striking techniques which Judo and Jujitsu did not have (It would have been pointless to punch against yoroi armout in medieval times so they never developed that tradition), so that by 1933 Karate was recognized as different from Jujitsu and given their own category.
So you will see in many Japanese karate much lesser joint-locks and take-downs. As for the history of Okinawan Gojuryu: The founder of Goju-Ryu - Chojun Miyagi Sensei was a very keen wrestler (Okinawan Wrestling), and he also trained in a Judo dojo for 2 years during his military service in Kyushu. I believe there's a story which said that he was barred from Judo in high school because he was too strong and he was unwittingly hurting the other students. Any way, Miyagi Sensei later became the physical education instructor in the Police Academy in Naha, and he got most of his students jobs there - they all trained in Judo as well because it was compulsory for police officers to do o. His senior students Eiichi Miyazato (Okinawan Goju-ryu Jundokan) for example, was multiple time All Okinawan Judo Champion and Judo 8th Dan (Gojuryu-10th Dan), Shinzato, Higa, Iha, they were all at one time policemen and good at Judo. So Goju-Ryu always had a Judo-Jujitsu element in it anyway.
Finally, Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate does not insist on rigid sparring "Styles" like you would see in some schools. The technical essence of Okinawan Goju-Ryu is to teach body-mechanics, attack and defence strategies, and a system of training (Hojo Undo, Junbi Undo etc). Kata, is an exercise in body-mechanics and techniques. We train our minds and bodies. There is no sparring style per-se. The idea is to work Goju-Principles into the strikes and throws and submission techniques. History records that never did Chojun Miyagi Sensei teach a certain sparring style. Weaving and Ducking is perfectly Goju-Ryu, Morio Higaonna Sensei had always taught a wide variety of training exercises in his syllabus.
Finally, all the footage in this video comes from various dojos of the IOGKF (International Okinawan Gojuryu Karate Federation). BUT if you look at other Okinawan Gojuryu Organizations you will find them doing the same during Iri-kumi (Sparring). In our Irikumi rules ground-fighting is for 20 seconds, because it is not realistic to roll for 3 minutes in a real-fight (So the argument goes). But all of Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate are very familiar with what I have presented in this Video.

Morio Higaonna was born 25th December 1938, he began training in karate when he was fourteen.
He studied Shorin-Ryu with his father, he was also training with a friend Tsunetaka Shimabukuro another Shorin-Ryu stylist. At the age of sixteen he began to
train in the Goju-ryu style on the recommendation of Shimabukuro Sensei. The year was 1955 and the young Higaonna was training in the garden dojo of the late Chojun Miyagi Sensei, his instructor was Anichi Miyagi Sensei.
At that time the training regime was very tough and Higaonna Sensei tells us of the
countless times he would practice Kata or Kakie training with many different opponents until
he could no longer move his arms. Anyone who has trained in Okinawa will know that due to the
climate this requires tremendous effort.
In 1957 the garden dojo moved to a permanent building, this was called the Jundokan, he continued
his training there, training up to five hours every day. After his instructor Anichi Miyagi Sensei moved
away to work on an American oil tanker Higaonna Sensei gained a place at the Takushoku University in Tokyo,
it was around this time that the first official Dan grading was organised, Higaonna Sensei was awarded 3rd Dan,
the year was 1960. It was in Tokyo that Higaonna Sensei taught at the famous Yoyogi dojo. Many thousands of
students passed through this dojo, some of the more notable were Sensei's Ogawa, Todano and Terauchi and from
the west Ernest Brenech, James Rousseau, Bakies Laubscher and from Shotokan Karate Terry O'Niel.
ng the late sixties and early seventies Higaonna Sensei begun to travel to several of the countries that were practicing
Okinawa Goju-ryu, he was invited to perform a demonstration at the
World karate Championships in Paris in 1972 and his reputation as one of the strongest Goju-ryu practitioners in the world
was growing. In 1979 in Poole, England with the help of his senior international instructors the IOGKF was set up.
From that time to this Higaonna Sensei has maintained his own strict training regime and continues to research the original
Kata and training methods of Goju-ryu, he still consults the advice of his instructor Anichi Miyagi Sensei and other senior
IOGKF advisors.
Anyone who has ever met Higaonna Sensei will not only be impressed by his karate ability but also by his humility and good
natured personality. It leaves you with the feeling of having met a true master of karate.

Learn about the major styles of karate from karate instructor Richard Amos in this Howcast video.
Okay, the major styles of karate. There are in fact more and more styles are coming out into the open now. When I started karate in the 70s there were really just a few. Shotokan, which is what I do, is probably the most widely spread for a number of reasons. First of all, because they had a instructor's program guiding from the early 60s in Japan and the Japan Karate Association sent out instructors all over the world in the early to mid-60s so that really spread karate. In fact, anyone who does Shotokan karate today probably can trace their original instructor from that first group of teachers that came from Japan.
Other styles which are very popular, you have Kyokushinkai which is like Shotokan a very big scale technique of karate but they focus much more on building a heavy power because they have a knock-down system. They don't have punches to the face. They have kicks to the face, so obviously you have to have quite a high guard which is very characteristic of that style. They hit really hard so they're usually more heavily muscled than some of the other karate styles.
Another very, very big style is Goju-ryu which bears its Okinawan roots a little bit more strongly than something Shotokan and there'll be more body conditioning in that one, more makiwara training which is the punching post which is a very traditional training tool. And other styles such as Shito-ryu and Shorin-ryu resemble each other to a degree but they all have their emphases. Some of them are more flowing. Shito-ryu has the big stances of Shotokan but not quite as much expansive body movement, etc., etc. But there are really many styles out there and they all have their own character.

Shinkichi Tatsuo Shimabukuro (島袋 龍夫; September 19, 1908 – May 30, 1975.) was the founder of Isshin-ryū ("One Heart Style") style of karate.
Isshin-Ryu (一心流 Isshin-ryū) is a style of Okinawan karate founded by Tatsuo Shimabuku (島袋 龍夫) in 1956. Isshin-Ryū karate is largely a synthesis of Shorin-ryū karate, Gojū-ryū karate, and kobudō. The name means, literally, "one heart way" (as in "wholehearted" or "complete"). In 1989 there were 336 branches of Isshin-ryū throughout the world (as recorded by the IWKA), most of which were concentrated in the United States.

In 1997 I visited the Jundokan dojo in Naha. After 3 weeks there I performed the 13 goju kata back to back to document the transition from Higaonna Morio Sensei's teachings to that of the Jundokan's (it's the same lineage) Although 3 weeks wasn't long enough to absorb all changes this was my best effort at the time. Hesitations in particular indicate changes I was trying to implement.

The Similarities between him and his brother Lyoto are shocking, as they both almost have the same style, that same feel for timing, but non the less, they are very different warriors all the same.
https://www.patreon.com/MindSmash
Music: [Downtempo] mōbe - in palo alto
Script: "Hello,
This was a very exciting fight for me, because when I saw it, it almost looked exactly like lyoto Machida's style, but orthodox instead of southpaw. I honestly thought this man was lyoto machida's younger brother, but it turns out, he's a 40 year old man, lyoto's older brother chinzo, he's ten years older... I was in shock... This dude has to be eating those goji berries or something, because he looks like he just graduated highschool, he definitely has a healthy intake of anti oxidants. Non the less, let's take a deeper look into this karate champions latest fight.
Just pay attention to the way he moves his left hand, he's reading his opponents reaction to it as he feints with the left, and notice how he positions his hands with the bladed stance, the same 3 point karate stance used by lyoto. The lead hand guages and helps maintain distance, constantly stepping in and backing away as he feints the left, while the right is lower to his side, ready to counter, waiting for that timing to drop power. He's feeling for his opponents rhythm and building his own sense of timing to that rhythm. Very Lyoto machida aswell in the way he backs up, prodding with leg kicks, basically looking for an opportunity to counter, and the longer this goes on, the more he will get a sense for his opponents rhythm.
Here Chinzo throws a front snap kick, and his opponent knees it to the side, and in that moment, chinzo see's an opening, comes in with an overhand, and watch how his back leg has now shifted to the front as he follows through with the overhand. That was some serious weight being transfered into the punch. But his opponent recovers.
Here, it appears chinzo was attempting to throw a kick with his lead leg, but the motion with halted as he saw his opponent come in with a jab, and so as he raises his hand to block, he is toppled over by his feet moving forward and his hands pushed back. I don't know what happened here but it seems very karate. Like look at his face, you can see him going WOAAH. I've actually never seen a move like this before. It's interesting, he precisely took hold the jab and deflected off of it.
Finishing sequence. Chinzo feints coming in with his left, and his opponents shows intent for a jab, he's picked up a pattern of behaviour. Now watch. Feints the left tapping gloves, then instantly, predicting the same behaviour coming in with a jab, overhand cross, his opponent is hurt, and you can see it on chinzo's face as he goes in to capitalize, WOAAHH. His opponent is pressured, and in that moment of anxiety what comes next is habit, chinzo again feints the left, and counters the pattern of behaviour the jab with a Yeah I did it uppercut... sorry, no, it's a bolo punch, and the fight ends. The reason why the uppercut was so effective in this situation was because his opponent ducked as he threw the jab. He did that here as well, and if you look at the feint he threw here, he was lowering himself similarily. Chinzo picked up on this pattern of ducking after the jab, and as joe lewis once said. The uppercut is the perfect weapon against a fighter in the crouched position, smashing the off switch.
This was very nostalgic for me, as there were so many lyoto machida ques throughout the fight, and to that end, I hope you guys enjoyed this as much as I did. Please don't forget to like and subscribe if you did, it's good karma, and until next time, peace."

Kata (traditional forms) are just movements of the human body. They are muscle-memory building tools used to get your body coordinated and at the same time learn movements that can be applied in a combative situation. The only difference is what happens afterwards: training to apply it.
We agree that 99.9% of karate schools don't go beyond just learning the forms. But with the right method of practicing and pressure testing the movements, karate can work.
This video provides examples of similar movements found in Okinawan Karate, an art that's hundreds of years old, and compares them with popular grappling arts of today.
We are a group on a mission to return Karate to its roots through the use of Kata as self-defense.

Wing Chun vs Karate Goju Ryu
These styles are a bit similar to each other, both are in close contact.
Our sparring was in a very light contact, but thanks to this we could have fun and see the differences between styles.
it was a respectfull fight, I enjoyed it so much : )
