What happened to the Ekranoplan? - The Caspian Sea Monster

09:46
What happened to the Ekranoplan, the huge ground effect vehicle the Soviets developed in the cold from the 1960's to the 1980's. This was a part plane, part boat that could fly just above the above the sea surface and carry huge loads of personnel or weapons at high speed. We look at its development, its inventor and its ultimate demise. Pateron : https://www.patreon.com/curiousdroid Sponsors : Luke, Muhammad Tauha Ali, Pascal Hausammann, Florian Hesse. Caspian Sea Monster Ekranoplan Flight Video

01:11
These craft were originally developed by the Soviet Union as very high-speed military transports, and were based mostly on the shores of the Caspian Sea and Black Sea. The largest had max take-off weight over 544 tonnes. About 120 ekranoplans (A-90 Orlyonok class) were initially planned to enter military service in the Soviet Navy. After the collapse of the Soviet Union smaller ekranoplans for non-military use have been under development. The CHDB had already developed the eight-seat Volga-2 in 1985, and Technologies and Transport developed a smaller version by the name of Amphistar.

Russia Is Building a New 'Caspian Sea Monster'

03:06
Russia Is Building a New 'Caspian Sea Monster' to speed up water travel, the Chaika A-050, which it claims will be ready by 2020-2022. The unusual aircraft, which flies just a few feet above the surface of a body of water, will act as a passenger transport, carrying up to 100. A basic aerodynamic principle is that the closer a wing operates to the ground, the more efficient it becomes. That isn't a factor for most aircraft, which endeavor to stay far away from the ground during the vast majority of their flying hours. A ground effect vehicle, on the other hand, embraces the increased wing efficiency by hugging the surface of an ocean, lake, or other body of water. GEVs fly over water because it is universally flat without obstacles and safer to crash on in the event of emergencies. The Soviet Union was an early pioneer in GEV research, building the so-called "Caspian Sea Monster" in the mid-1960s. At 544 tons, the Caspian Sea Monster was the largest GEV ever built. According to a 2015 report by Valuewalk.com, the Chaika A-050 will travel at speeds of up to 300 miles per hour, with a range of 3,000 miles. It will be able to carry at least nine tons of cargo or 100 passengers. However, a Sputnik News report indicated that the Russians could install the BrahMos missile on the new ekranoplan. Ivan Antsev, the Scientific Production Enterprise Radar MMS general manager, said the new GEV would be capable of serving in the interests of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, the ministry of emergencies, the ministry of transport and the Defense Ministry.
Incredible Photos Of The Unbelievably Massive 1987 Russian Plane

Incredible Photos Of The Unbelievably Massive 1987 Russian Plane In 1987, the first 350-ton Ground Effect Vehicle (GEV) from the series of Soviet battle missile carriers was produced. The massive “ship” was called Lun (also called Project 903), after the Russian name for a bird of prey, harrier. The Lun-class ekranoplan (NATO reportedly named Duck) was designed by Rostislav Evgenievich Alexeyev. It was used by the Soviet and Russian navies from 1987 until the late 1990s. A second Lun-class battle aircraft (named the Spasatel or “Rescuer”) was to be produced, but due to the end of Cold War and partial disarmament, the project was changed to a rescue aircraft/mobile field hospital for rapid deployment to any coastal or ocean location. It was about 90% done when the military funding ended and the second Lun ekranoplan was never completed. The MD-160, the only model of the Lun-class ever built now sits unused at a naval station in Kaspiysk. The Russian Defense Ministry has no plans to revive the project. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thank You For Watching..... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Site : https://worldofweapon.wordpress.com Facebook : http://www.facebook.com/worldofweapon16 Twitter : https://twitter.com/worldofweapon VK.com : https://vk.com/vk.worldofweapon Myspace : https://myspace.com/worldofweapon Tags::-- latest news, modi, india, bjp, news, narendra modi, pm modi, dhola - sadia bridge, nmf news, jdu, hindi news, india's longest bridge, congress, zee news, zeenews, znews, pm narendra modi, assam, longest bridge, india longest bridge, narendra, bridge, dhola sadia bridge, facebook, modi in assam, narendra modi latest, narendra modi today, asia longest bridge, obama, barack, twitter, asaam, trump, donald, bjo, pmo, business, entertainment, bollywood, masala russian, war, aircraft, military, caspian, russia, cold, sea, vehicle, ekranoplan, technology, secret, nato, monster, caspian sea monster, unusual, advanced, army, navy, ground, effect, future, realistic, lun, moscow, flying, flight, documentary, duck, guided missile, soviet, air, ocean, skimming, wig, gev, largest, jet, jumbo, wing russian navy, military, future weapons, russian army, russia, putin, army, technology, usa, russian armed forces, rifle, news, navy, airforce, military power, us navy, tank, arms, defence, marine, military news, armed forces, gun, weapon, missile, military drill, us, rocket, call of duty, the pentagon, naval, victory day, moscow, world war, war game, vladimir putin, battleship, destroyer, united states navy, frigate military, military videos, cargo aircraft (aircraft type), military exercise, military training, armed forces, aircraft (type of fictional setting), airplane (product category), military tribute, plane, military operation, united states air force (armed force), military (film genre), military aircraft (military resource), airport, flying, aviation (industry), airplane, aircraft (invention), army, lockheed c-5 galaxy, top 10 best bombers, black hawk, blackstar, ufo sightings, real ufo, caught on tape, ufos, ufo, black triangle, x-40, x-37b, aurora, top secret, government, secrets, secret, sci-fi, paranormal, science

Russia Is Making a New Flying "Sea Monster" to Skim the Surface of Water

03:49
The Russian embassy in South Africa has tweeted pictures of a new ground effect vehicle, the Chaika A-050, which it claims will be ready by 2020-2022. A ground effect vehicle (GEV), on the other hand, embraces the increased wing efficiency by hugging the surface of an ocean, lake, or other body of water. The Soviet built a number of military GEVs: the A-90 Orlyonok functioned as a military transport, while the giant Lun-class ekranoplan had six Moskit anti-ship missiles. The Lun is no longer in service but is visible via satellite—it's parked on a floating barge in Kaspiysk, Dagestan. The photograph shows off the A-050 in civilian colors, but it's difficult to see the advantages such a craft could have over ferries or conventional transport aircraft. GEVs are more difficult to fly than regular aircraft and, though there are few data points, seem to have a high accident rate. On the other hand, a craft that flies low under surface radars, can attain speeds of 250-350 miles an hour, and can quickly disgorge troops on a beachhead might be very useful to the Russian military and other armed forces around the world. The A-050 may yet turn up in Russian military service.

Unusual Aircraft - Ekranoplan the Leviathan

03:26
Subscribe to Naked Science - http://goo.gl/wpc2Q1 Every other Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare... Designers around the world are trying to build radical new aircraft, at this secret airbase outside Moscow, Russian engineers created what looked more like a flying saucer than a plane. Called "Tarelka”, it was conceived during the height of the Cold War. This early secret footage shows the first scale model tests. Despite their methods being low-tech the results were remarkable. It looked impossible but the Tarelka flew. Initial tests were so successful that construction began on a full size Tarelka. Looking like a craft from another planet, it could carry up to a dozen passengers, and possibly become the new executive jet of the future. The engines are housed inside the main body. The small wings provide no lift at all, they help stabilise and steer the machine. But shortage of money from the Russian government caused work to stop on the Tarelka. A waterborne version was also tested, it was designed to travel just above the surface of the water using a cushion of air to provide lift for very little thrust. This is called ground effect, something Russian designers had used in their most unusual aircraft. The Lun-class Ekranoplan, also known as the Caspian Sea Monster, is a ground effect vehicle designed by Rostislav Evgenievich Alexeev and used by the Soviet and Russian navies from 1987 until the late 1990s. Larger than jumbo jet, this astonishing machine is powered by eight huge turbofan jet engines. It flew using the lift generated by the ground effect of its large wings when close to the surface of the water. Although they might look similar and have related technical characteristics, Ekranoplans like the Lun are not aircraft, seaplanes, hovercraft, or hydrofoils. Ground effect is a separate technology altogether. The International Maritime Organization classifies these vehicles as maritime ships. Ekranoplan (KM, A-90 "Orlyonok" and Lun)

11:00
During the mid-1960s chilly height of the Cold War, US photo reconnaisance spotted a strange apparition on the shores of the Caspian Sea - a gigantic 100m-long aircraft with inexplicably truncated square wings. US Intelligence dubbed the beast the "Caspian Sea Monster", unaware that the Russians were developing not, as they thought, an enormous conventional seaplane, but rather a 550-ton water-hugging behemoth designed to use the ground effect to skim the ocean at high speed, undetected by radar. The Russians had a rather more prosaic name for the Caspian Sea Monster: the KM or "korabl-maket". This "ship-prototype" was the first in a series of Soviet "ekranoplan" ("screen plane") developments and was designed by Rostislav Evgenievich Alexeev of the Central Hydrofoil Design Bureau. The KM was intended as a test platform to examine the possibilities of the "Wing In Ground" (WIG) effect whereby (in very simple terms) a wing travelling close to the ground is provided with extra lift by the "cushion" of air compressed under it - thereby enabling a combination of greater aircraft weight for less power and/or enhanced fuel economy. The KM, powered by eight Dobryin VD-7 turbojets on the front of the fuselage, and two on the tail for extra thrust during take-off, first took to the air in October 1966. During its extensive test career, it was continually modified. The wingspan was altered to between 32m and 40m, and the length varied from 92m to 106m. The KM crashed in 1980, apparently due to the pilot ill-advisedly attempting to take off without giving it full throttle. An attempt to recover the leviathan from the depths was thwarted by its vast weight. While the KM programme was ongoing, Alexeev began work on a medium-sized ekranoplan suitable for military transportation duties. Dubbed A-90 "Orlyonok" ("Eaglet"), the 140 tonne, 58 metre long aircraft had its maiden flight in 1972. The A-90 boasted two turbojets and one turboprop engine which propelled it to a speed of 400 km/h for 1,500 km at an cruise altitude of 5-10 m. Four flying examples were built, one of which crashed in the Caspian in 1975 and was subsequently rebuilt. The aircraft entered military service in 1979 with three A-90s reportedly still operational in 1993. Thereafter, they were reportedly mothballed at the Kaspiysk naval base on the Caspian. The 280 tonne, 74 metre long M-160 Lun was another ekranoplan developed from Alexeev designs. One was built in 1987, which entered service in 1989. A second example was under construction when the Soviet Union collapsed and, despite subsequent refitting as a search-and-rescue aircraft, remained unfinished when the authorities effectively pulled the plug on ekranoplan funding.

Ekranoplan KM 'Caspian Sea Monster' seaplane (Russian)

11:00
Sorry its in Russian! :( Note: The 6-engined jet at 0:40 is the Antonov 225, which is presently the largest aircraft in the world, period. Its a cargo transporter and its cargo bay is so large it can hold most of the assembled components of a Boeing 747. The Russian space shuttle Buran can be attached to its back for transport as well. The aircraft at 1:23 is the Orlyonok ekranoplan, which as of October 2007 is in the process of being restored for an upcoming Russian aircraft exhibition in Moscow. (Or at least, that's what I've read on the net.) There are thought to be maybe one or two other surviving Orlyonoks besides this one. The aircraft at 7:35 is the Lun ekranoplan, which is based on the KM 'Caspian Sea Monster', but smaller. From the wikipedia article: An ekranoplan (Russian: экранопла́н, literally "screen plane") is a vehicle resembling an aircraft but which operates solely on the principle of ground effect (in Russian эффект экрана effekt ekrana - from which the name derived). Ground effect vehicles (GEV) fly above any flat surface, with the height above ground dependent upon the size of the vehicle. Ekranoplan design was conceived by revolutionary Soviet engineer Rostislav Alexeev. During the Cold War, ekranoplans were sighted for years on the Caspian Sea as huge, fast-moving objects. The name Caspian Sea Monster was given by US intelligence operatives who had spotted the huge vehicle, which looked like an airplane with the outer halves of the wings removed. After the end of the Cold War, the "monster" was revealed to be one of several Soviet military designs meant to fly only a few meters above water, saving energy and staying below enemy radar. The ekranoplan has a lifting power of 1,000 tonnes, among the largest ever achieved. The KM, as the Caspian Sea Monster was known in the top secret Soviet military development program, was over 100 m long (330 ft), weighed 540 tonnes fully loaded, and could travel over 400 km/h (250 mph), mere meters above the surface of the water. Another model was the Lun-class, entering service with the Black Sea Fleet in 1987; the Lun-class vehicles had a top speed of 550 knots. The important design principle is that wing lift is reduced as operating altitude of the ekranoplan is increased (see ground effect). Thus it is dynamically stable in the vertical dimension. Once moving at speed, the ekranoplan was no longer in contact with the water, and could move over ice, snow, or level land with equal ease, though flight over land would have involved extreme risks unless the surface were very dependably flat. These craft were originally developed by the Soviet Union as very high-speed military transports, and were based mostly on the shores of the Caspian Sea and Black Sea. The largest could transport over 100 tonnes of cargo. The development of ekranoplans was supported by Dmitri Ustinov, Minister of Defence of the USSR. About 120 ekranoplans (A-90 Orlyonok class) were initially planned to enter military service in the Soviet Navy. The figure was later reduced to fewer than thirty vehicles, planned to be deployed mainly for the Black and the Baltic Soviet navies. Marshal Ustinov died in 1985, and the new Minister of Defence Marshal Sokolov effectively stopped the funding for the program. The only three operational A-90 Orlyonok ekranoplans built (with renewed hull design) and one Lun-class ekranoplan remained at a naval base near Kaspiysk. The two major problems which the Soviet Era Ekranoplanes faced were: 1) Longitudinal stability and 2) Highly reliable navigation & automatic control systems that were not very advanced at the time. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, ekranoplans have been produced by the Volga Shipyard in Nizhni Novgorod located at 56°21'58.08?N, 43°52'14.26?E. Besides the development of appropriate design and structural configuration, special automatic control systems and navigation systems are also being developed. These include special altimeters with high accuracy for small altitude measurements and also lesser dependence on weather conditions. According to many extensive experiments and research activities, it has been shown that "Phase Radio-altimeters" are most conducive for such applications as compared to laser, isotopic or ultrasonic altimeters. As of October 19th, 2009 one ekranoplans could be seen on Google Earth at Kaspiysk: The Lun, located at 42°52'54 N, 47°39'24 E. A structure on a nearby beach may be a third disassembled ekranoplan. An Orlyonok was formerly at 42°52'50 N, 47°39'57 E but it has since been moved to Moscow where it sits on display. ЖУКОВ, большого реактивного самолета, море самолет

Lun Attack Ekranoplan : The Sea Monster - MADE in the USSR

Sea Monster! The Navy Fears This Deadly Stealth Submarine Could Sink An Aircraft Carrier SUBSCRIBE ►http://bit.ly/2FGURX1 #Welcome to the ALNEWS Channel! ====================================================================== AIP, while not granting a diesel-electric submarine the same underwater staying power as a nuclear-powered submarine, is still a radical improvement. There are several types of AIP propulsion systems. The Sterling system is one of the oldest, closed-circuit diesel generators, followed by chemical fuel cells. The latest trend in AIP systems is the use of powerful, long-lasting lithium ion batteries. A One of the most crucial improvements in submarines of the postwar era is the air independent propulsion (AIP) system. First fielded in the 1990s, the development of AIP changed the ways non-nuclear submarines operated, allowing them to fight—and hide—underwater longer. Combined with their extreme quietness, the use of AIP has made modern diesel-electric subs efficient killers, capable of stalking and sinking their prey even in a challenging anti-submarine warfare environment. Caspian Sea Monster Ekranoplan KM in Flight with VE watch

02:52
Caspian Sea Monster Ekranoplan Russian ground effect vehicle. Wristwatch is available at Russia2all.com. Vostok-Europe wrist watches immortalized the plane even more with the Caspian Sea Monster Diver watch also featured in this video.

WORST NIGHTMARE Future Russian Military Aircraft Technology to challenge US Military Power

12:44
A great video on future military Aircraft Technology for the Russian Military. SUPPORT SOUTH FRONT: PayPal: [email protected], http://southfront.org/donate/ or via: https://www.patreon.com/southfront An aircraft is a machine that is able to fly by gaining support from the air. It counters the force of gravity by using either static lift or by using the dynamic lift of an airfoil,[1] or in a few cases the downward thrust from jet engines. Common examples of aircraft include airplanes, helicopters, airships (including blimps), gliders, and hot air balloons.[2] The human activity that surrounds aircraft is called aviation. Crewed aircraft are flown by an onboard pilot, but unmanned aerial vehicles may be remotely controlled or self-controlled by onboard computers. Aircraft may be classified by different criteria, such as lift type, aircraft propulsion, usage and others. Fixed-wing[edit] An Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger airliner Main article: fixed-wing aircraft The forerunner of the fixed-wing aircraft is the kite. Whereas a fixed-wing aircraft relies on its forward speed to create airflow over the wings, a kite is tethered to the ground and relies on the wind blowing over its wings to provide lift. Kites were the first kind of aircraft to fly, and were invented in China around 500 BC. Much aerodynamic research was done with kites before test aircraft, wind tunnels, and computer modelling programs became available. The first heavier-than-air craft capable of controlled free-flight were gliders. A glider designed by Cayley carried out the first true manned, controlled flight in 1853. Practical, powered, fixed-wing aircraft (the aeroplane or airplane) were invented by Wilbur and Orville Wright. Besides the method of propulsion, fixed-wing aircraft are in general characterized by their wing configuration. The most important wing characteristics are: Number of wings – Monoplane, biplane, etc. Wing support – Braced or cantilever, rigid, or flexible. Wing planform – including aspect ratio, angle of sweep, and any variations along the span (including the important class of delta wings). Location of the horizontal stabilizer, if any. Dihedral angle – positive, zero, or negative (anhedral). A variable geometry aircraft can change its wing configuration during flight. A flying wing has no fuselage, though it may have small blisters or pods. The opposite of this is a lifting body, which has no wings, though it may have small stabilizing and control surfaces. Wing-in-ground-effect vehicles are not considered aircraft. They "fly" efficiently close to the surface of the ground or water, like conventional aircraft during takeoff. An example is the Russian ekranoplan (nicknamed the "Caspian Sea Monster"). Man-powered aircraft also rely on ground effect to remain airborne with a minimal pilot power, but this is only because they are so underpowered—in fact, the airframe is capable of flying higher. Rotorcraft[edit] An autogyro Main article: Rotorcraft Rotorcraft, or rotary-wing aircraft, use a spinning rotor with aerofoil section blades (a rotary wing) to provide lift. Types include helicopters, autogyros, and various hybrids such as gyrodynes and compound rotorcraft. Helicopters have a rotor turned by an engine-driven shaft. The rotor pushes air downward to create lift. By tilting the rotor forward, the downward flow is tilted backward, producing thrust for forward flight. Some helicopters have more than one rotor and a few have rotors turned by gas jets at the tips. Autogyros have unpowered rotors, with a separate power plant to provide thrust. The rotor is tilted backward. As the autogyro moves forward, air blows upward across the rotor, making it spin. This spinning increases the speed of airflow over the rotor, to provide lift. Rotor kites are unpowered autogyros, which are towed to give them forward speed or tethered to a static anchor in high-wind for kited flight. Cyclogyros rotate their wings about a horizontal axis. Compound rotorcraft have wings that provide some or all of the lift in forward flight. They are nowadays classified as powered lift types and not as rotorcraft. Tiltrotor aircraft (such as the V-22 Osprey), tiltwing, tailsitter, and coleopter aircraft have their rotors/propellers horizontal for vertical flight and vertical for forward flight.

Caspian Sea Monster KM Ekranoplan [HD]-2014

01:25
The Caspian Sea Monster, officially «KM» (Korabl Maket, Russian - Корабль-макет Naval Prototype), also known as the "Kaspian Monster", was an experimental ekranoplan, developed at the design bureau of Rostislav Alexeyev. The KM was designed in 1964 -- 1965, and was unique in size and payload. The first spy photographs from American spy satellites showed a strange aircraft carrying letters "KM" on its fuselage. CIA disambiguated it as "Kaspian Monster", while it actually meant "Korabl maket" -- "prototype ship" in Russian. Chief designer for this aircraft was Rostislav Alexeyev, and the lead engineer was V.Efimov. The ekranoplan had wingspan of 37.6 m, length -- 92 m, maximum take-off weight -- 544 tons. Until An-225 it was the largest aircraft in the world. KM was designed as a special vehicle for the military and rescue teams. However designing such a machine caused serious difficulties. It was documented as a marine vessel and prior to the first flight a bottle of champagne was broken against its nose. It displayed the Soviet Navy Flag and was assigned to the Soviet Navy, since the ground effect is only possible within several meters from the surface. The new vehicle was, however, piloted by air force test pilots. KM testing started in 1966 at the Caspian sea near Kaspiysk (Dagestan). First flight was performed by V. Loginov and Rostislav Alexeyev himself, which was very unusual - most Soviet aircraft designers never piloted their own creations. All works were conducted under patronage of the Ministry of Shipbuilding Industry. The KM was determined to have an optimum (fuel efficient) cruising speed of 430 km/h (267 mph, 232 knots), and a maximum operational speed of 500 km/h (311 mph, 270 knots). Maximum speed achieved was 650 km/h (404 mph, 350 knots), although some sources claim up to 740 km/h (460 mph, 400 knots). KM was tested at the Caspian Sea for 15 years until 1980. In 1980, pilot error caused a crash without human casualties. The vehicle was too heavy to be recovered from its watery wrecksite.

Caspian Sea Monster - Ekranoplan

02:50
Ekranoplans. These "ekranoplans" are Ground Effect Vehicles (GEV). GEV's are usually of water type. They seem like a mix of a ship and a plane. GEV's cannot fly at the same altitude of normal planes but few are designed to fly at those altitudes as well as using GEV. These aircraft use ground effect making it more fuel efficient than conventional planes in it's category. A ground effect vehicle needs some forward velocity to produce lift dynamically and the principal benefit of operating a wing in ground effect is to reduce its lift-dependent drag. The basic design principle is that the closer the wing operates to an external surface such as the ground, said to be in ground effect, the more efficient it becomes. An aerofoil passing through air increases air pressure on the underside, while decreasing pressure across the top. The high and low pressures are maintained until they flow off the ends of the wings, where they form vortices which in turn are the major cause of lift-induced drag - Normally a large portion of the drag affecting an aircraft. The higher the aspect ratio (Or how long and skinny) the wing is, the less induced drag created for each unit of lift and the greater the efficiency of the particular wing. This is the primary reason gliders have long and skinny wings. Placing the same wing near a surface such as the water or the ground has the effect of greatly increasing the aspect ratio, but without having the complications associated with a long and slender wing, so that the short stubs on an ekranoplan can produce just as much lift as the much larger wing on a transport aircraft, though it can only do this when close to the earth's surface. Once sufficient speed has built up, some GEV's may be capable of leaving ground effect and functioning as a normal aircraft until it approaches its destination. The distinguishing characteristic is that it is unable to land or takoff without a significant amount of help from the ground effect cushion, and cannot climb until it has reached a much higher speed. To name a few Ground effect vehicles: The Caspian Sea Monster, Lun-class Ekranoplan and A-90 Orlyonok (These aren't the only GEV's). Music: Hello World - Two Steps From Hell.
