The secret language of flowers | Heather Whitney | TEDxSalford
Dr Heather Whitney is a molecular biologist by training, but now uses ideas from across the scientific spectrum (from optical physics to beekeeping) to study plant-animal interactions. As both a researcher and speaker, she hopes to show that plants are much more sneaky than is usually suspected -- they have to do everything that animals do (from finding a mate to coping with predators) but manage it without moving. Heather and her work have been featured on Radio 4′s Material World and The Naked Scientist. As a scientist, Heather has won awards for her research and has recently been awarded a L'Oréal-UNESCO UK and Ireland for Women Award in Science Fellowship. She spent several years as a researcher at the University of Cambridge before moving to the University of Bristol. Post production done by https://twitter.com/#!/CassiusClayson About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. The Secret Language Of Plants - National Geographic Documentary National Geographic Documentary HD - The Secret Language of Plants. Also called green plants, are multicellular eukaryotes of the kingdom Plantae. Green plants have cell walls with cellulose and obtain most of their energy from sunlight via photosynthesis by primary chloroplasts, derived from endosymbiosis with cyanobacteria. Their chloroplasts contain chlorophylls a and b, which gives them their green color. Some plants are parasitic and have lost the ability to produce normal amounts of chlorophyll or to photosynthesize.

Flowers with secret meanings
http://chennai.shriramproperties.com Giving flowers to someone you care about is easy, relatively inexpensive and might just be one of the most universally appreciated gestures. We assign our own meaning to the bouquets we give. The plant or colour we choose often has to do with a special memory or event, for example. But more than 200 years ago in the Victorian era, flowers themselves were symbols. People gave a certain flower to convey a specific sentiment or message. What that was depended on the flower, petal colour and number of blooms. Floriography, the language of flowers, was well-understood during this time. If you're curious about the hidden meaning behind some of the most popular flowers we love today, let this list be your guide. http://chennai.shriramproperties.com

Learn to speak the secret language of "Irigi" by Henry Catherwood Lesson One
No Under 12's please ! We don't want you knowing this. Only share with those that you want to talk privately with. Irigi is a secret language that is really easy for anyone to learn and speak. It uses your normal language (any language will work) but you simple learn to add sounds as you say the word. This then disguises the word with only an irigi speaker being able to understand it. (great for words like ice cream, swimming etc) Also see http://www.irigi.com My 12 year old son was speaking well with in three hours of watching and after 3 weeks occasional use, is fluent. Can you do better?

The Language of Flowers - Connie Dover
The Language of Flowers written and performed by Connie Dover. You speak the language of flowers You hear them wake in the soft morning hours With you they dare their secrets to share You speak the language of flowers You bring the song of the wind Crying from heaven for you my friend Through stormy skies to your arm it flies You bring the song of the wind You find the sparrow that falls When boughs break, to you she calls With broken wing, still she sings You find the sparrow that falls Instrumental You feel the beat of my heart Though we are ages and lifetimes apart When oceans are wide and nations divide You feel the beat of my heart I see your face in the stars You walk on moonlight, you drift on clouds Vision unseen, you float through my dreams I see your face in the stars You speak the language of flowers.

Rose - Queen of Flowers - The Secrets of Nature
Subscribe to watch full natural history and science documentaries! A new documentary is uploaded every week. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesecretsof... Twitter: https://twitter.com/NatureUniversum Throughout the world, roses speak an unmistakeable language. They have touched and seduced mankind for thousands of years, while their names and varieties reflect contemporary history. One of the most famous varieties - the Gloria Dei or Peace Rose - has elevated the rose to a symbol of world-peace. Being the most successful garden rose of all time this documentary retraces a large portion of the history of rose cultivation in Europe by its means. All of these manmade varieties also have wild rose ancestors - life giving, thorny monsters, which charm us once a year with their luxuriant flowers and perfect beauties. The film presents the biological features of roses and explains why they are capable of producing such an abundance of varieties. How are humans and animals affected by the composition of the scent of roses? Why do some white garden roses develop red spots when it rains? And why do red spiders fall in love with the bikini rose? Besides these interesting facts the environmental significance of roses are also explored, both at home in our gardens and for animals in the wild.

Vanessa Diffenbaugh on THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS
A mesmerizing, moving, and elegantly written debut novel, The Language of Flowers beautifully weaves past and present, creating a vivid portrait of an unforgettable woman whose gift for flowers helps her change the lives of others even as she struggles to overcome her own troubled past. The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it's been more useful in communicating grief, mistrust, and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings. Now eighteen and emancipated from the system, Victoria has nowhere to go and sleeps in a public park, where she plants a small garden of her own. Soon a local florist discovers her talents, and Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But a mysterious vendor at the flower market has her questioning what's been missing in her life, and when she's forced to confront a painful secret from her past, she must decide whether it's worth risking everything for a second chance at happiness.

Shel Silverstein Forgotten Language
Once I spoke the language of the flowers, Once I understood each word the caterpillar said, Once I smiled in secret at the gossip of the starlings, And shared a conversation with the housefly in my bed. Once I heard and answered all the questions of the crickets, And joined the crying of each falling dying flake of snow, Once I spoke the language of the flowers. . . . How did it go? How did it go?

Rehearsal of "To Daffodils" from Benjamin Britten's Five Flower Songs (Op. 47, No. 1)
The William Ferris Chorale rehearses "To Daffodils" -- the first movement from Benjamin Britten's Five Flower Songs -- for our upcoming May 2014 concerts "The Secret Language of Flowers, Music and Sweet Poetry". Text is a poem by Robert Herrick (1591--1674), "To Daffodils": Fair Daffodils, we weep to see You haste away so soon; As yet the early-rising sun Has not attain'd his noon. Stay, stay, Until the hasting day Has run But to the even-song; And, having pray'd together, we Will go with you along. We have short time to stay, as you, We have as short a spring; As quick a growth to meet decay, As you, or anything. We die As your hours do, and dry Away, Like to the summer's rain; Or as the pearls of morning's dew, Ne'er to be found again. More concert information: The Secret Language of Flowers -- Music and Sweet Poetry Works of Britten, Persichetti, Lauridsen and Whitacre The William Ferris Chorale, Chicago's internationally acclaimed professional choral ensemble and Artist-in-Residence at Loyola University, concludes its 42nd season with "The Secret Language of Flowers -- Music and Sweet Poetry" a program of four contemporary choral works celebrating flowers and springtime. The program promises to be all the sweeter coming out of a particularly long and harsh winter. Featured works are Benjamin Britten's highly imaginative Five Flower Songs, and Vincent Persichetti's Flower Songs, evocative settings of e. e. cummings's poetry. Morten Lauridsen's glorious choral cycle, Les Chansons des Roses, and Eric Whitacre's dramatic Flower Songs will conclude the festive and colorful concert. Renowned Chicago actress Marie Goodkin will intersperse the music with recitations of poetry by a variety of poets. There will be two performances of this program -- May 3rd and 4th. • Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 7:30pm Madonna della Strada Chapel, Loyola University, 1032 West Sheridan Rd, Chicago, IL • Sunday, May 4, 2014 at 3:00pm Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 203 South Kensington Ave, La Grange, IL TICKET INFORMATION: Tickets available at www.williamferrischorale.org • Preferred Seating: $25 • General Seating: $20 • Students and Seniors: $5 discount available on Preferred and General seating • Special pricing for Loyola University students available. $7 with LUC ID card • Groups of 10 or more are eligible for discounts. The Language of Flowers
This week’s video is a short introduction into the language of flowers. I’ve focused on the meanings attributed to different flowers during the Victorian period, but of course flowers have held meanings to people long before that time. If you want to look up some other flowers, I’ve linked below three excellent books that contain extensive lists of flowers and their sentiments: The coloured language of flowers (1886) https://archive.org/details/colouredlanguage00burk The language and poetry of flowers (1858) https://archive.org/details/languagepoetryof00adamiala Hill's manual of social and business forms (1888) (This one is a fascinating read and covers a wide variety of topics!) https://archive.org/details/manualofsochills00hillrich ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thelonghairedflapper/ My Clothing Line / Etsy Shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/PhonographFashions My Blog: http://vintageinamodernworld.blogspot.com/ PS: Remember in the last video how I mentioned how little sleep I got wearing those curlers?
