The William Ferris Chorale rehearses "To Daffodils" -- the first movement from Benjamin Britten's Five Flower Songs -- for our upcoming May 2014 concerts "The Secret Language of Flowers, Music and Sweet Poetry".
Text is a poem by Robert Herrick (1591--1674), "To Daffodils":
Fair Daffodils, we weep to see
You haste away so soon;
As yet the early-rising sun
Has not attain'd his noon.
Until the hasting day
But to the even-song;
And, having pray'd together, we
Will go with you along.
We have short time to stay, as you,
We have as short a spring;
As quick a growth to meet decay,
As you, or anything.
As your hours do, and dry
Like to the summer's rain;
Or as the pearls of morning's dew,
Ne'er to be found again.

The Secret Language of Flowers -- Music and Sweet Poetry
Works of Britten, Persichetti, Lauridsen and Whitacre
The William Ferris Chorale, Chicago's internationally acclaimed professional choral ensemble and Artist-in-Residence at Loyola University, concludes its 42nd season with "The Secret Language of Flowers -- Music and Sweet Poetry" a program of four contemporary choral works celebrating flowers and springtime. The program promises to be all the sweeter coming out of a particularly long and harsh winter. Featured works are Benjamin Britten's highly imaginative Five Flower Songs, and Vincent Persichetti's Flower Songs, evocative settings of e. e. cummings's poetry. Morten Lauridsen's glorious choral cycle, Les Chansons des Roses, and Eric Whitacre's dramatic Flower Songs will conclude the festive and colorful concert. Renowned Chicago actress Marie Goodkin will intersperse the music with recitations of poetry by a variety of poets.
There will be two performances of this program -- May 3rd and 4th.
