https://www.quest.com/products/toad-for-oracle/ Developers often struggle with SQL tuning, often calling upon a DBA to help. In the world of agile processes and Continuous Integration, this approach no longer works and developers need tools to help solve performance issues that would otherwise make their way into production. Toad’s patented SQL optimization technology automatically re-writes SQL and presents a number of faster running alternatives.

While the primary focus of both Oracle and SQL Server is on relational database management, there are a number of tools that come with each software package that are focused around monitoring and investigating the performance of the servers. These monitoring tools vary wildly between the two platforms, yet still have a lot in common because of shared fundamentals. In their latest live 'Oracle vs. SQL Server' discussion, Jonathan Lewis (Oracle Ace Director, OakTable Network) and Grant Fritchey (Microsoft SQL Server MVP) will look at built-in performance monitoring mechanisms and tools. Most IT organizations tend to manage system performance in a reactionary fashion, analyzing and correcting performance problems as users report them. When problems occur, hopefully system administrators have tools necessary to quickly analyze and remedy the situation. In a perfect world, administrators prepare in advance in order to avoid performance bottlenecks altogether, using capacity planning tools to predict in advance how servers should be configured to adequately handle future workloads. Watch as capacity planning expert Jon Hill explains the 3 crucial steps of successful capacity planning. Hill then performs real world demonstrations that detail each step using TeamQuest Performance Software. If you're in the capacity management arena or just want to know more on how to efficiently manage IT infrastructure performance; this video is a must see.

Mark Champion, Product Marketing Manager at Redgate, talks you through the major new features in SQL Monitor 6, including: 00:33 New diagnostic interface 03:10 Query plans To find out more about SQL Monitor, visit https://www.red-gate.com/sql-monitor Or download it now https://www.red-gate.com/dynamic/products/dba/sql-monitor/download ----- Transcript ----- Hi I’m Mark Champion, one of the team behind SQL Monitor. We have recently released version 6 of our SQL Server monitoring and alerting tool, SQL Monitor, and I want to show you what’s new, what’s great and how SQL Monitor can make your job easier. In version six we have make it quicker and simpler to diagnose the cause of problems affecting a server. The main changes you will see are centred on the server/instance overview, which we get to by clicking here. In previous versions the information was displayed across a variety of screens, and it could be fiddly to jump between them to get the information you needed. In version six we’ve brought all that information together into this one server overview. Starting at the top of the page there’s an overview graph showing four key metrics for this server, the CPU and Memory usage, Disk I/O, and Waits. These can all be turned on and off like this. We can also baseline any of these, based on the previous 7 periods. By default this graph shows the past 24 hours, but you can look at longer or shorter periods like “The last 6 hours” or “the Last 2 days”, and of course, you can rewind time as in previous versions. Another thing you’ll notice is that underneath the graph there are small circles. These indicate alerts that happened over your select period and they are colour-coded according to severity. If I hover over the circle I get a brief description and if I click it, I can see the details for that alert in this right-hand-side panel. I can also now directly clear the alert from here, or jump straight to that alert’s settings. This makes it easier to clear and tune alerts as they arrive. Having the alert information on the same page as the metrics gives you additional context so you have a better understanding of exactly what was going on with your server. You’ll see on the overview graph, there’s a highlighted window in white. This is the “Focus Window”. We can move it around or resize it using the handles. Everything below that graph now updates to look at just that narrowed time window that we have selected. For example, I might want to take a look at this spike in CPU usage from this morning. The 4 graphs below break out those metrics further, and let you see some finer detail which isn’t visible on the main graph above. All the other metrics you will see below are also tied to the period selected in the Focus Window. So first we have Top Queries and Top Waits ( I’ll come back to the top queries section in a moment) , but scrolling down or using the navigation on the left here, we can see various other metrics you’d expect from the previous version, including general metrics, processes, the error log and databases. We can click any of the databases here and see full details for that database appear. Jumping back up to the top to the top queries list, we can see another major new enhancement. If we choose to look at this most expensive query, we can see a new query plan button. We automatically pick out expensive operations which you can jump straight to by clicking here. We also automatically pick out certain warnings for you. Here for example, we show that there was an operation with no join predicate, which is the reason this query runs slowly, and can be used to understand how the query could be rewritten better. We’ll also warn about things like missing indexes, and give you the script to create those indexes. Version six of SQL Monitor now helps you get the answers to a whole range of SQL Server problems in a faster, easier and simpler way. Try it for yourself by clicking the download link in the description below and get a free 14 day trial. If you have any questions, feel free to email [email protected] Thanks for watching and remember to subscribe.

This Video will Provide the step by step installation of TOAD, which is oracle database 12c, 11g, 10g, 9i, 8i client. Installation of oracle is not sufficient. We need an oracle client to work with. It is possible to work with the server, but only if you have working on the stand-alone or personal computer. But If you are working on the network, where oracle database will be installed only on one computer i.e. server. Then to work with that server or interact with that installed oracle database you need an oracle client. TOAD is one of the popular client available in the market. There are others too. Let start with the installation of oracle database client TOAD.

SQLskills Insider video from May 15th, 2011 newsletter. Several times recently I've been asked about checkpoints and how to track the I/O load they place on SQL Server. There are two trace flags you can use to trace checkpoint information so you can tell which database is the one undergoing a checkpoint when an I/O spike occurs. To show you this I thought I'd do a demo for you. The short video (11 minutes) shows how to track checkpoints using perfmon, the trace flags, and looking in the log to examine the checkpoint log records themselves. Demo code: http://www.SQLskills.com/InsiderContent/YouTube/Insider201105Code-2.zip You can get all the Insider videos by joining our community, with a bi-weekly newsletter with an editorial, demo video, and book review. http://www.SQLskills.com/Insider.
