Ever wonder what goes on inside of those industrial design studios? Well you've come to the right place. This is a video that myself and 5 other classmates made during our final year as ID students at Arizona State University. The purpose of this video is 1. to show how much fun us industrial designers have and 2. to explain to others what it is we do. Please note that we absolutely endorse the views and opinions expressed in this video (as comical as they may be, they are all very true). More about Elise: http://www.eli5e.nl/en/ More about i.materialise: https://i.materialise.com/ Industrial Designer Elise Luttik from Amsterdam, founder of design studio eli5e, creates stunning interior design objects, product designs, and furniture. From Polyamide to Ceramics and Transparent Resin, she has created outstanding gadgets and décor items with the help of 3D printing. For our latest video interview, we met up with Elise to learn more about the passion that drives her. Elise likes playful designs with a twist that make people think twice before using an item – and that make them smile. Her inspiration to start using 3D printing came to her at the SXSW Conference in Austin, Texas: “I see 3D printing as a sustainable driver for my design studio. I think it is great that as a start-up you get the opportunity to develop high-quality products without the need for big investments.” The Dutch designer finds most of her inspiration for new designs while traveling, and always carries her sketchbook with her in case something catches her eye. “I get inspiration during my trips abroad. Foreign cultures inspire me to change my view on daily matters. I always carry my little sketchbook with me, so whenever an idea pops up, I make sure to write it down or draw a quick sketch,” she told us.

Christiaan Maats is a designer and entrepreneur who challenges the way we look at product design. Going beyond form and function he shows us how products carry deeper layers of meaning and how those layers can connect us to a bigger reality. In this Talk, Christiaan Maats explains how meaningful products can embody the change we want to see in the world and sheds light on his own vision of a circular society that integrates industrial society with its natural roots. Christiaan Maats was born and raised in Groningen, though he studied Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University in Delft. His keen interest in the psychology behind product- and brand experience took him to Sydney, Australia where he conducted a case study titled “Storytelling through Product Design”. Good product design is good storytelling, according to Christiaan. His creation of the world’s first biodegradable shoes that bloom is a perfect example of his philosophy. Christiaan considers himself a practical idealist. He is driven by his passion for innovation and creating products and brands that inspire a better future by making you smile, think and wonder. His refreshing ideas on sustainable innovation disrupt the status quo. Christiaan's diverse background and enthusiasm are great ingredients for an inspiring TEDx Talk that focuses on the society of the future and how to get there. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

There are lots of product design studios out there. Choosing a good one can be a challenge. For more info check out: http://www.focuspdm.com/services/ Product Design Overview Product design and development is the process of taking an opportunity, and turning that idea into a market ready, viable product. What is it about this process that is so special? Why do you need a designer to be involved? Design is a creative process in which designers use their “design thinking” skills (intuition, creativity, and analytical ability) to understand opportunities and constraints. With an understanding of competitive markets, customer needs, business goals and current technologies we envisage and realize practical solutions that meet customer needs and create real value. By nature, this process is an iterative process in which we design, develop, test, redesign and refine. The design process needs to be flexible enough to meet the needs of the particular product and the client organisation. There isn’t a precise ‘recipe’ that we follow for each and every project. However, we do have an effective design process that provides a framework within which we can work. Product Design Our product design process has been proven to result in “good design” with commercially successful and award winning products in the following market categories. Lifestyle & Architectural products Medical & Scientific equipment Electronic & Industrial products Plastic product design Mechanical product design We recognise that our client knowledge and experience is invaluable and is used throughout the product development process. It is rare that a successful product is designed in isolation. Ideally, we like to immerse our clients in our process, collaborating and keeping them involved all the way through. Working together towards a shared goal is the best way to reach their customers. http://www.focuspdm.com/services/

DIT's Product Design programme is the first of its kind in Ireland. Graduates of the programme have gone on to a variety of successful careers in Ireland and abroad. In the course of this four year honours degree, students are immersed in the various disciplines of product design through a unique interdisciplinary approach -- students develop their knowledge and skill sets through modules in the areas of design, engineering and business. This integrated method produces product designers who have the ability and confidence to be both creative and innovative in whatever role they choose to pursue. It gives them the necessary ability to face the challenges of designing new products and bringing them to market. Graduates of the program have proven themselves. equally comfortable in the design studio, the engineering office and the boardroom. Students learn how to produce accurate physical models of their designs using the extensive studio and prototyping facilities. They also use industry standard design software to bring their projects to fruition. In the capstone module of the programme, students conceptualise, design and develop a novel product. A number of students have developed successful products in this project which they have gone on to pursue and develop further upon graduation. While the final project is important for the students' individual development, a series of team projects over the course of the program help the students to develop interpersonal skills along with an appreciation of team dynamics. Students of the programme have won and been shortlisted for prestigious national and international awards including the Enterprise Ireland All Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, the James Dyson award, the International Forum for Design Concept awards in Hannover, Germany and the Staples Global Eco-easy Challenge in Washington DC, USA. Students of the programme have won and are regular finalists in the DIT Bolton Trust Student Enterprise awards in which they must demonstrate the ability to form their own company, design and develop a new product and produce a viable business plan in tandem.
