The Allemande (18th Century Dance)

02:23
Abigail Harrington and Mason Armour dance the Allemande at the Joel Lane Museum House (www.joellane.org). Allemande, processional couple dances with stately, flowing steps, were fashionable in 16th-century aristocratic circles; also as an 18th-century figure dance. The earlier dance apparently originated in Germany but became fashionable both at the French court (whence its name, which in French means “German”) and in England, where it was called almain, or almand. The French dancing master Thoinot Arbeau, author of Orchésographie (1588), a principal source of knowledge of Renaissance dance, regarded it as an extremely old dance. Its popularity waned in the 17th century. In the allemande the dancers formed a line of couples, extended their paired hands forward, and paraded back and forth the length of the ballroom, walking three steps, then balancing on one foot; a livelier version used three springing steps and a hop. The music was in 4/4 time. As a 17th-century musical form, the allemande is a stylized version of this dance. In a suite (as in J.S. Bach’s English Suites) it is normally the first movement. The 18th-century allemande was a figure dance in 2/4 time for four couples; one of its handholds possibly derived from the earlier allemande. The dancers performed intricate turns called enchaînements, or passés, with elaborate interlacings of the arms. As popularity grew it became a two couple dance - note how closely the dancers hold each other - this was one of the first dances of its kind. www.historicinterpretations.org

Karen Brown's Hotel Palazzo Stern, Venice Italy Hotel

01:01
http://www.karenbrown.com Welcome to Karen Brown's World of Travel We would like to share with you one of our recommended hotels in Italy The Hotel Palazzo Stern in Venice After two years of loving restoration, the Palazzo Stern reopened in the spring of 2008 as a stunning small boutique hotel; one of Venice's latest jewels. Because it is a sister-hotel of the one of our favorites in Venice, the Locanda Vivaldi, we knew it would be wonderful. And, it is. This 15th-century palace was built by the prestigious Malpaga Family. Later the Stern Family bought the mansion as their private home, totally rebuilt it, and enriched the interior with fine architectural details, gorgeous mosaics, magnificent chandeliers, frescoes, stained glass, and sculptures. The Palazzo Stern faces the Grand Canal, conveniently located next to the Ca' Rezzonico Vaporetto stop. The peach-colored building with arched Moorish-style windows is very handsome and is further enhanced by a spacious, waterfront terrace. As you enter the reception area, you find a marble staircase lined by columns. The wooden staircase to the next level is a copy of the one at Ca' D'Oro Museum. All of the guestrooms are lovely. Some face the Grand Canal, while others overlook a private garden, the tiled rooftops of Venice, or a side-canal called the Rio Mapaga. Throughout, the decor is splendid, reflecting a traditional Venetian flair with precious wall fabrics, sumptuous drapes, oriental carpets, frescoes, ornate furnishings, and Murano glass. On the top floor there is a roof-top terrace featuring a Jacuzzi tub. The hotel is planning to open a restaurant. Until then light meals can be ordered at the bar Travel your Dreams with Karen Brown!

Costumi cinematografici, abiti d'epoca, vestiti storici. Costume Designer Catia Mancini.

05:11
The term costume can refer to wardrobe and dress in general, or to the distinctive style of dress of a particular people, class, or period. Costume may also refer to the artistic arrangement of accessories in a picture, statue, poem, or play, appropriate to the time, place, or other circumstances represented or described, or to a particular style of clothing worn to portray the wearer as a character or type of character other than their regular persona at a social event such as a masquerade, a fancy dress party or in an artistic theatrical performance. www.catiamancini.it www.catiamancini.eu www.catiamancini.com One of the more prominent places people see costumes is in theatre, film and on television. In combination with other aspects, theatrical costumes can help actors portray characters' age, gender role, profession, social class, personality, and even information about the historical period/era, geographic location and time of day, as well as the season or weather of the theatrical performance. Often, stylized theatrical costumes can exaggerate some aspect of a character; for example Harlequin and Pantaloon in the Commedia dell'Arte. [edit] National costume National costume or regional costume expresses local (or exiled) identity and emphasises a culture's unique attributes. It is often a source of national pride. Examples of such are a Scotsman in a kilt or a Japanese person in a kimono. [edit] Holidays and festivals A traditional, European-style Santa suit The wearing of costumes has become an important part of such holidays and festivals as Mardi Gras and Halloween (see Halloween costume for more information), and (to a lesser extent) people may also wear costumes in conjunction with other holidays, such as Christmas and Easter. Mardi Gras costumes usually take the form of jesters and other fantasy characters, while Halloween costumes traditionally take the form of supernatural creatures such as ghosts, vampires, pop culture icons and angels. Christmas and Easter costumes typically portray mythical characters such as Santa Claus (by donning a santa suit and beard) or the Easter Bunny by putting on an animal costume. Costumes may serve to portray various other characters during secular holidays, such as an Uncle Sam costume worn on the Independence day for example. In Judaism, a common practice is to dress up on Purim. The Jews celebrate the change of their destiny. They were delivered from being the victims of an evil decree against them and were instead allowed by the King to destroy their enemies. A quote from the Book of Esther, which says: "On the contrary" (hebrew: ונהפוך הוא ) is the reason that wearing a costume has become so popular among the Jews on this holiday. [edit] Children A Child wearing a bee costume. Costumes also serve as an avenue for children to explore and roleplay. Children can dress up in various forms; for example characters from history or fiction like pirates, princesses or cowboys, common jobs like nurses or police officers, or animals such as those seen in zoos or farms. [edit] Mascots Another very popular situation where costumes are employed are for sporting events, where people dressed as their team's representative mascot help the club or team rally round their team's cause. Animal costumes which are visually very similar to mascot costumes are also popular among the members of the furry fandom where they are referred to as fursuits.

Corelli: Sonata 12 in D major

06:29
Arcangelo Corelli (17 February 1653 -- 8 January 1713) was an Italian violinist and composer of the Baroque era. Corelli was born on 17th February 1653 in the small Romagna town of Fusignano, then in the diocese of Ferrara. His family were land-owners who had lived in Fusignano since 1506 (a Corelli moved to the area from Rome in the fifteenth century); although apparently prosperous, they were certainly not of the nobility, as several fanciful accounts of the composer's genealogy subsequently claimed. The wealth of anecdotes and legends attached to Corelli contrasts with the relative paucity of truly reliable contemporary evidence documenting events in his life. This gap is especially pronounced for his formative years, including his musical education, even though traditional accounts of a highly idealized childhood have long been debunked. Chronicles of the Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna indicate that Corelli was accepted as a member by 1670, at the exceptionally young age of seventeen. The style of execution introduced by Corelli and preserved by his pupils, such as Francesco Geminiani, Pietro Locatelli, and many others, was of vital importance for the development of violin playing. It has been said that the paths of all of the famous violinist-composers of 18th-century Italy led to Arcangelo Corelli who was their "iconic point of reference". His concerti grossi have often been popular in Western culture... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcangelo_Corelli A link to an informative and relevant WebSite concerning Corelli and his artistic genius: http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/artists/a3546087-fe59-47d3-a3a8-42d58e2573c7 A comprehensive listing detailing many indispensable recordings of Corelli's music: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/arcangelo-corelli-mn0001190565/compositions Please Enjoy!

Muted colours, micro 3D architectural shapes, age-old traditions revived and a celebration of the skills of the master craftsman. This is the fil rouge linking the new collections of Fap ceramiche seen at Cersaie 2014 for the time. The 4 new lines are called Terra, Creta, Boston, and Firenze and were inspired by gorgeous Tuscan farmhouses, old decorated floors, and time-worn plaster finishes as well as by a more metropolitan and minimalist style, whose distinctly vintage notes lend unmistakeable personality. The new collections are the result of experimentation and ceramic haute couture, with a medley of shades reproducing the “aged” look of old decorated floorings, modern 3D textures and an ample choice of mosaics and decorative inserts. The wide range of soft yet determined colours like nature, and new and popular sizes recreate a traditional mood. Close your eyes. Now relax and picture green hills dotted with old cottages. Envisage landscapes that look like they were painted by hand, with the genuine, earnest pleasures of an ancient world drifting between the land and the sky. This was the scene that inspired us as we created our new collections. Materials with a timeworn feel have been revitalized. They come in hues borrowed from nature and the land. The surfaces are reminiscent of the finest Italian “handmade” traditions. They have been masterfully produced to have a powerful, spellbinding effect that goes straight to the heart. There is a sense of the past returning in modern form to bring stunning new delights. Relax. All of this is waiting to surprise you.

The Vietnam War: Reasons for Failure - Why the U.S. Lost

01:45:58
In the post-war era, Americans struggled to absorb the lessons of the military intervention. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0871137992/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0871137992&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=d1bb53399f448906b40e7c954de052ac As General Maxwell Taylor, one of the principal architects of the war, noted, "First, we didn't know ourselves. We thought that we were going into another Korean War, but this was a different country. Secondly, we didn't know our South Vietnamese allies... And we knew less about North Vietnam. Who was Ho Chi Minh? Nobody really knew. So, until we know the enemy and know our allies and know ourselves, we'd better keep out of this kind of dirty business. It's very dangerous." Some have suggested that "the responsibility for the ultimate failure of this policy [America's withdrawal from Vietnam] lies not with the men who fought, but with those in Congress..." Alternatively, the official history of the United States Army noted that "tactics have often seemed to exist apart from larger issues, strategies, and objectives. Yet in Vietnam the Army experienced tactical success and strategic failure... The...Vietnam War...legacy may be the lesson that unique historical, political, cultural, and social factors always impinge on the military...Success rests not only on military progress but on correctly analyzing the nature of the particular conflict, understanding the enemy's strategy, and assessing the strengths and weaknesses of allies. A new humility and a new sophistication may form the best parts of a complex heritage left to the Army by the long, bitter war in Vietnam." U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger wrote in a secret memo to President Gerald Ford that "in terms of military tactics, we cannot help draw the conclusion that our armed forces are not suited to this kind of war. Even the Special Forces who had been designed for it could not prevail." Even Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara concluded that "the achievement of a military victory by U.S. forces in Vietnam was indeed a dangerous illusion." Doubts surfaced as to the effectiveness of large-scale, sustained bombing. As Army Chief of Staff Harold Keith Johnson noted, "if anything came out of Vietnam, it was that air power couldn't do the job." Even General William Westmoreland admitted that the bombing had been ineffective. As he remarked, "I still doubt that the North Vietnamese would have relented." The inability to bomb Hanoi to the bargaining table also illustrated another U.S. miscalculation. The North's leadership was composed of hardened communists who had been fighting for independence for thirty years. They had defeated the French, and their tenacity as both nationalists and communists was formidable. Ho Chi Minh is quoted as saying, "You can kill ten of my men for every one I kill of yours...But even at these odds you will lose and I will win." The Vietnam War called into question the U.S. Army doctrine. Marine Corps General Victor H. Krulak heavily criticised Westmoreland's attrition strategy, calling it "wasteful of American lives... with small likelihood of a successful outcome." In addition, doubts surfaced about the ability of the military to train foreign forces. Between 1965 and 1975, the United States spent $111 billion on the war ($686 billion in FY2008 dollars). This resulted in a large federal budget deficit. More than 3 million Americans served in the Vietnam War, some 1.5 million of whom actually saw combat in Vietnam. James E. Westheider wrote that "At the height of American involvement in 1968, for example, there were 543,000 American military personnel in Vietnam, but only 80,000 were considered combat troops." Conscription in the United States had been controlled by the President since World War II, but ended in 1973." By war's end, 58,220 American soldiers had been killed, more than 150,000 had been wounded, and at least 21,000 had been permanently disabled. According to Dale Kueter, "Sixty-one percent of those killed were age 21 or younger. Of those killed in combat, 86.3 percent were white, 12.5 percent were black and the remainder from other races." The youngest American KIA in the war was PFC Dan Bullock, who had falsified his birth certificate and enlisted in the US Marines at age 14 and who was killed in combat at age 15. Approximately 830,000 Vietnam veterans suffered symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. An estimated 125,000 Americans fled to Canada to avoid the Vietnam draft, and approximately 50,000 American servicemen deserted. In 1977, United States President Jimmy Carter granted a full, complete and unconditional pardon to all Vietnam-era draft dodgers. The Vietnam War POW/MIA issue, concerning the fate of U.S. service personnel listed as missing in action, persisted for many years after the war's conclusion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War
