The way we dress has a profound impact on how we think about ourselves and how others perceive us, yet there remains a disconnect between what we stand for and how our clothes are made. The scale and emotional power of the fashion industry uniquely position it to create a more equitable society. Christian Birky started a pony-powered, zero-emissions lawn service at age 10. IELTS Speaking Test | CLOTHES & FASHION - IELTS Sample Speaking Test 8.0+ with Tape Script Examiner: Good morning, what’s your full name, please? Candidate: My full name is Kaisy Nguyen. E: Could you please give me your ID card? C: Here it is. E: Nice to meet you, my name is…, and I come from… I’ll begin by asking you some questions about yourself. Candidate: Yeap. Part 1 E: What clothes do you like to wear? C: I like to mix T-shirt with Jeans, especially for the casual style. It’s really fashionable and convenient. E: What kinds of clothes do you dislike? C: Honestly, I don’t wear the skirt which is too tight and too short. It makes me feel like it needs letting out and letting down. E: What does your family think about the clothes that you wear? C: I suppose that each of us has the different eye for fashion and that’s the reason why my family respects my style. E: Are clothes and fashions important to you? C: I have to confess that I take pride in my appearance, so I’ve never regretted spending a lot of money for it. Part 2 E: Thank you very much. Let’s move on cue card topic. Here’s the question: Describe the types of clothes you prefer to wear You should say: What the clothes look like When you prefer to wear them Where you like to buy them And explain why you like wearing these clothes I’d like you to speak on this topic in 2 minutes. Before that, you have 1 minute to prepare. And here’s some paper and pen for you to make some notes if you wish. …1 minute… Well, could you please begin. Well, as I’ve mentioned before, I like to mix T-shirt with Jeans. It’s really fashionable and convenient, which I prefer to dress for the casual occasion. Although this style is simple, this is one of the timeless fashions in the world that likes a must-have item for fashion lovers. Moreover, I guess that it’s easy to get a makeover with T-shirt and Jean, you always look young and smart. In detail, when I need to go out with my family and friends, this style is absolutely my first choice. Indeed, it’s faster and comfortable when I just have to put on a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. Especially, I have to confess that I’m actually a shopaholic so I always go crazy with a brand-new T-shirt and Jean for each season. When I see things I love, I’ll immediately buy them, it not depends on where I like to buy. Sometimes I get in Mango store when I’m in a shopping mall and other times maybe while I’m in a supermarket, I have a quick look and see if there’s anything that catches my eye. Moreover, online shopping is my favorite activity as well, I prefer free size so it’s easier, cheaper and safer to buy via the Internet. I suppose that I even can save me a lot of time too. Besides, everyone says that I look good in this style, therefore, I spend a lot of money like a slave for fashion. For T-shirt and jean, for each occasion, I have different ways of the makeover. I always feel that with this style, I’m so trendy and smart. In addition, I suppose that I have an eye for color so, with my T-shirt and jean collection, I still know how to wear it suitable for the particular event. As a woman, I love to dress up and my choice is always T-shirt and jean. Part 3 E: Thank you very much. Let’s move on to discussion topic related to Fashion&Clothes. E: How different are the clothes people wear now compared to ten years ago? C: I suppose that everything has change swiftly since 10 years ago, especially in fashion. There are a variety of brand-new styles that the previous generations have never known before, such as unisex or cosplay etc. However, there are still some styles that are always popular and fashionable like vintage or T-shirt and Jean, which are as same as the last 10 years. E: Compare the materials and fashions of today's clothing with those of the past C: In my opinion, there are more and more materials and fashions were born to meet the need of modern people. For examples, suede, denim etc, they are the latest and the hottest trends in recently. Meanwhile, linen was one of the most trendy materials in the past. Moreover, people in modern society have a tendency to choose the sexy style, instead of vintage style in the past. E: Do men and women have the same buying habits when they buy clothes? -------------------------------------------------------------- SUBSCRIBE: https://goo.gl/Zd4cFB Latest Real IELTS Speaking Tests from all over the world: http://ieltsez.com DOWNLOAD FREE Practice App iOS: http://apple.co/2j3DJBZ Android: https://goo.gl/LVf3jF VISIT OUR COMMUNITY: https://www.facebook.com/ieltsezdotcom

Hi everyone! This is a topic that I've been thinking about a little bit recently and I wanted to share my thoughts with you. If you've got anything to add, feel free to tell me about it! I think that what inspires us as people and our style is a really interesting topic, because inspiration is all around us! it often comes from the groups that we exist in - whether that's geographical, identity-based (like the LGBT community), or online. And I think that we have to lift each other up within these groups! The exhibition I mentioned is called Queer Looks and is part of Brighton Museum's Wear It Out project, celebrating 50 years since the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK. Queer Looks is focused on the dress of LGBTQ+ people in Brighton and Sussex! It opens next Summer!! Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elliemedhurst/ Stay Fabulous! xoxoxoxoxo

Learn new vocabulary about beauty and fashion. Just like fashion trends, the words we use in English to talk about makeup, clothing, hair, and style, change quickly. The words that are used today are not the same as five years ago. There is a whole world of beauty vloggers and fashion hauls on YouTube. If you’re into fashion, you’ll want to look en point when wearing items from your most recent haul. If makeup is your thing, you’ll be wearing a red lip or using a palette to get a smoky eye. You’ll be sporting balayage or ombre hair (don’t worry -- I’ll teach you how to pronounce those new French-origin words too!). Watch and never forget the boyfriends of Instagram. Then take the quiz at https://www.engvid.com/english-slang-15-trendy-fashion-words/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. In this lesson we're going to look at trendy fashion words. These are words that I'm hearing used a lot now around our times, so let's have a look through the words and learn them one-by-one so we can sound really cool and fashionable. Let's start with: "en pointe". If something is en pointe, it means perfect, it looks so good. What you're wearing today, that dress, your dress is en pointe. It's so fashionable, it's so, so hot right now. Very similar meaning to something being "on-trend". If we think about the word "trendy", it means fashionable. But to say something is trendy isn't fashionable enough anymore, we have to change it and say: "on-trend". We could also change it and say: "bang-on-trend". If it's bang-on-trend, it's even more now, happening right this minute. Next, if we're talking about makeup... When I was younger we used to talk about wearing lipstick or wearing red lipstick, or a pink lipstick, but now instead of saying the word "lipstick", it's described as: "I'm wearing a red lip today." And the same thing, instead of saying: "eye shadow", "Oh, I bought this eye shadow. It's blue. Look at it on my eyes", you don't say that because it doesn't... Doesn't sound... Doesn't sound fashionable enough, it doesn't sound like you know about makeup. So, what people who know about makeup say is they say: "Oh, today I'm wearing a smokey eye." I'm not wearing a smokey eye, I haven't got anything on, but a smokey eye is when the eye shadow looks grey or dark, and it's most often worn at night when you're going out. You get your eye shadow these days in "palettes". And instead of wearing just one eye shadow, like, wearing a pink eye shadow, the eye shadow palette comes with about... Well, as many as you want I suppose, but from 4 to 12 eye shadows, and what they do is they put on the different eye shadows from the palette. So, they will talk about creating the smokey eye from palette number three, or whatever. Next is a makeup term that's been around for a few years. This makeup term came from when the Kardashians got famous because the kind of makeup Kim Kardashian would use was a kind of makeup that shades her face to give it a certain... To make it look like there's more shadow on the face and a more dramatic kind of foundation, which is done with different brushes. It's a kind of makeup technique called "contouring". Apparently it comes... Apparently it's a makeup technique that's been around for ages, but before, drag queens used to use it, men who... Men who were still men, but dressed up as women mostly for performance and being in shows and things like that. So it originally comes from there. And I did experiment with contouring. I once watched a few too many YouTube videos, and it all went terribly wrong, so moving on from contouring. Next we have "drugstore makeup". In England we don't have drugstores, we have pharmacies where you go and buy your medicine, and you can buy toiletries, but we don't have drugstores. We have chains of drugstores, for example, Boots or Superdrug, and you can go in there and buy makeup, but we never call those places drugstores. Yet, when people talk about makeup now, the younger generation, they will... They will talk about buying drugstore makeup, which means the kind of makeup that only... Only costs you a few pounds to buy, it's not the really, really expensive makeup, and you can... You can buy it easily, close... Close... Close where you live. So, drugstore makeup is the kind of makeup you can do that doesn't cost you so much money as the really expensive brands. So that's an American term, but it's being used a lot here now in England. The next... The next two terms are about hair. These are newer fashionable techniques for dying your hair, and the two words come from French. In the English pronunciation we'd say: "balayage".

Rob and Neil discuss the oddest item of clothing to hit the catwalk this year - the humble high-vis jacket. They were designed to be worn for safety by people like cyclists and pedestrians and by workers who need to be seen if, for example, they're working in the road or are directing people. So it's strange to think that now people choose to wear them as the latest fashion item. Listen to our discussion and learn new vocabulary along the way. http://www.engvid.com/ Do you know what a 'phrasal verb' is? In this lesson, I will explain what a phrasal verb is, and teach you the most common phrasal verbs native speakers use to talk about clothing. I will teach you 'dress up', 'zip up', 'do up', 'wear in', 'kick off', 'have on', and many more! Phrasal verbs can be difficult for English learners to remember. Watch this lesson and then take the quiz, so that you'll remember them all! http://www.engvid.com/12-phrasal-verbs-clothes/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. My name is Emma, and in today's video, I am going to teach you some phrasal verbs about getting dressed and putting on clothes. Okay? So it's about clothes. What's a phrasal verb? A phrasal verb is when you have a verb and you have a preposition. So it's a verb plus preposition is a phrasal verb. Students usually hate phrasal verbs. There's so many of them in English and they're very difficult to remember. So, in this video, I'm going to teach you maybe 12 or 13 phrasal verbs that will really help you to improve your English. So let's get started. The first verb I want to teach you is: "dress up". Okay. "Dress up". What does it mean "to dress up"? When you dress up, maybe you have a hot, hot date. Maybe there's the boy or the girl of your dreams and you want to look good - you will dress up, meaning you will wear something that looks extra good. So, for example, right now, I'm wearing this sweater, not dressed up. If I wanted to dress up, oh, look here, maybe I would put on this nice dress. Okay? So dress up. Here's my sentence: "I have a date. I have a date. I should dress up tonight." Okay. "Zip up". So again: "dress up", "zip up". What does "zip up" mean? Well, I'll show you. Did you see that? "Zipping up" means you have a zipper and you pull it up. "Zip up! It's cold!" Mothers love to say this to their children: "Zip up your jacket so you won't be cold." Very similar to zip up, is: "button up". When you "button up" something, you don't zip up, you have buttons. So let me show you. So I will take off my sweater and I will put on a new jacket with buttons. Okay, so if I button up my jacket... Maybe... Where is the button? Okay, here we go. Just like this. Okay? So I buttoned up my jacket. Okay, good. "I should button up my jacket." The next expression I want to teach you: "do up". So all of these: "up", "up", "up", "up". If you "do something up", it means you either button it up or you zip up. "Do up" means the same thing as "zip up" and "button up". "I must do up my jacket." Means: I should button up my jacket, do up your jacket. Okay? It's all the same. "Have on". "What do you have on right now?" It means the same thing as: "wearing". What are you wearing? What do you have on? Pay special attention, the preposition is: "on". Okay? So tell me, what does Emma have on right now? Emma has a hat on. Well, it's not exactly a hat; it's a shower cap. I like to take baths, so this is for the shower. "Put on". "I put on my hat." Okay? When you put something on, it's just putting on. "I put on my hat." What's the opposite of: "put on"? Oh, I don't have it here. Well, you will see it in a moment. But I put on - "take off". I took off my hat. Next expression: "throw on". "I threw on my hat." Can you guess what this means? If I "throw it on", it means I do it quickly. Okay? "I threw on my hat and I ran out the door.", "I threw on my hat and I went to school.", "I threw on my jacket and I went to school." So it means you put on clothes very quickly. I'm going to take off my hat. I think it's a little too colourful. "Try on". What does it mean "to try something on"? If you ever go to a store and you see: "Oh, look at that dress. It's the most beautiful dress." I'm going to try it on, meaning I'm going to put it on at the store to see if I like it. So "try on" is for shopping. You usually go to a small room, a fitting room, and you see if you like the outfit by putting it on. So it's about stores. "At the store, I tried on a shirt.", "At the store, I tried on the shoes, I tried on the hat." So this is the expression: "try on". Again: "on", "on", "on", "on". And the first four were: "up", "up", "up", "up". It's very important that you use the correct prepositions. If I say: "Do down", or: "do in", or: "do off", these maybe don't make any sense or they have different meanings. So the preposition is what makes the meaning. So let me teach you some more expressions about getting dressed. Okay, so I already explained: "take off", but I wanted you to see how it's spelt. "Take off". I took off my hat, now I have no hat. "I took off my jacket." Means to take off your jacket. Okay, so it's the opposite of: "put on". I put on my hat and I took off my hat.

February IELTS speaking test questions & answers: http://ieltsspeakingquestions.blogspot.com/2016/02/clothing-you-received-as-a-gift-recently.html Questions about: job, work, computers, learning, future plans, clothes, gifts, fashion, designer clothes, young people, old people, trendy clothes, uniforms How to pass the IELTS Speaking Test | Part 3 Top tips on how to respond to Part 3 questions in the IELTS speaking test In section 3 of the IELTS speaking test, the IELTS examiner asks you some additional questions (follow up questions) related to the topic you speak about in Part 2 of the test (the Cue Card Topic). The time allowance for Part 3 in the IELTS test is 4 to 5 minutes. How many questions you are asked will depend on the length of the answers you give to each question – around 40 seconds per question is a good guide. The format of the questions in part 3 is as follows: Part 3 consists of two main questions (Q1 and Q2), and each main question has three sub questions. Time management is important in this section of the test because if you spend 4 minutes answering the first question and the three sub questions – you will not be asked the second main question (Q2) and sub questions. Why is this important? Because instead of responding to six questions in total – you will respond to only three. The IELTS examiner only allows for four minutes in total. Therefore, if you speak for four minutes in response to Q1 – you will have no more time available to try and answer any other questions. It’s possible that some of the other questions provide a better opportunity for you to talk. For some test takers, it might be easier to give shorter answers (40 seconds) and attempt to answer all six questions. Important: Part 3 questions are related to the topic you talk about in Part 2 of the IELTS speaking test. This means that if you receive a Part 2 Cue Card Topic about food, for example, then the Part3 questions will also be related to food, in general. Part 3 Question Examples: We have been discussing a popular type of food in your country, and now I’d like to ask some more questions about this subject in general. Question 1 Firstly, I would like to discuss what things make a specific kind or style of food become popular in a country. Can you suggest some things which make a certain type of food popular? • Which types of food are the most popular in your country? • Why do you think these particular types of food are the most popular? • Do you think that other types of food might be popular in the future? Question 2 Now, let’s continue and talk about national variations in styles of food. Why do you think different types of food become popular in different countries? • Do you think it is important to be able to correctly cook the national food of the country you are born in? • What are some of the ways in which people can learn about and learn to appreciate food from different countries? • Do you think it’s possible that there might only be one kind of global food sometime in the future? Good luck in your IELTS Speaking Test!
