6.1 The Men | Yohji Yamamoto & Comme des Garçons Fall / Winter 1991 Joint Presentation in Tokyo

04:07
A/W 1991, as far as I know, showed in Paris at the end of January 1991 and then showed again together with CdG in Tokyo on June 1st and called “6.1 THE MEN”. Still one of the most talked about and coveted collections by Yohji fans in Japan from what I can tell, many of the pieces still catch quite large sums on the second hand market. The theme was “war”, several musicians including Charles Lloyd and John Cale (who also modeled in A/W04 btw) modeled the show and apparently sang some antiwar song together at the final part of the show (the collection was created and shown during the gulf war). Some of the signature pieces was the leather jacket with women prints on the back (he referenced this in “my dear bomb” as well, when he talked about nose art of american fighter planes being pictures of “girlfriends and sexy ladies” when heading into battle), zipper jackets and Joan Miró inspired blazers. This is a great story from Ottmar Liebert about his experience when he walked the show, well worth the read. “In 1991 the Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto, together with Comme des Garçons, was putting on the first men’s fashion show in Japan and asked me to be one of his runway models. At the time Yohji prefered to use actors and musicians over models and he has also used athletes in the past. I flew to Tokyo from Los Angeles and was picked up at the airport and taken to a very nice hotel in Tokyo, which Frank Lloyd Wright had designed in the sixties. The show took place in the Olympic swim stadium of Tokyo, where the pool had been covered by a runway stage. On each end of the runway a huge wall was erected. Behind one wall Yamamoto was set up and behind the other wall Comme des Garçons. Comme des Garçons : Dennis Hopper, Trumpet player Don Cherry and his son Eagle-Eye Cherry (a TV presenter in the UK and not yet the pop star), British actor Julian something or other, Keyboardist Morgan Fisher (who later produced the wonderful CD "Miniatures” to which I contributed a piece)… Yohji Yamamoto : Charles Lloyd, Edgar Winter, a member of YMO (one of Japan’s most famous bands, which also featured Ryuichi Sakamoto)… Yohji and his people treated everyone wonderfully. And then he made a mistake on the day of the show. Thinking we were all men instead of the stars some felt they were, he offered as part of the refreshments Japanese cans of beer. In Japan cans are tiny, they are cute and many of the guys probably thought that one couldn’t possibly get drunk from drinking tiny cans of beer….well, if you drink a dozen of them you do get drunk, you know! And then a British pop singer asked a French rapper to turn down the crap on his boom-box and the French guy responded with his fist, which fractured the pop guy’s jaw. While he was rushed to the hospital Yohji’s people frantically searched for somebody who could wear his clothes…. In the end one of Yohji’s French employees took his place and wore the clothes well. I felt terribly embarassed. Here we were in one of the great cities of the world, guests of a real artist, and these men had to get into a fight. What a way to repay Yohji’s kindness! But fame is fleeting and karma instant.. I never heard from the British pop star and the French rapper again… I remember how amazed we were at the Japanese audience. Some had waited since the early morning hours and yet, when the doors opened the first in line went to the last seat instead of claiming the best seat in the house. It was almost biblical… One thing I remember about the show itself is that Yohji, who is a guitarist himself and also produced the soundtrack, had installed sound triggers along the runway. We were invited to step on those triggers, each of which controlled a different sound that would blast over the music. Car crashes, industrial sounds, drum breaks, glass breaking, guitar riffs etc…I also remember that the Brit who was walking ahead of me was drunk or high or both and thought that the crowd’s enthusiasm was directed at him instead of the clothing…I remember three or four people helping me change into the next outfit, grabbing shirts, pulling on shoes…I remember the late Don Cherry walking around on the runway like a court jester and greeting the other Comme des Garçons walkers…“

Avant-Garde Fashion - Beauty Through Reduction

09:31
Avant-garde fashion designers produce beautiful garments that push the boundaries of conventional taste. In many ways, avant-garde pushes back against the trends in mainstream fashion in an attempt to create work that is more thoughtful and of a higher quality. With its emphasis on silhouette, drapery, asymmetry and unique textures, avant-garde fashion yields some of the most creative garments we see today. Designers and brands featured (partial list): Yohji Yamamoto / Y-3, Comme des Garçons, Rick Owens, Junya Watanabe, Alexander McQueen, Thom Krom Please support the designers you like! Y-3 Spring/Summer 2016 Runway Show (HD)

14:15
Y-3 SPRING/SUMMER 2016. At their essence, adidas and Yohji Yamamoto are united in their endless quest to define and dress one singular object: the human body in motion. For Spring/Summer 2016, Y-3 delivers a bold, iconic collection that explores a kinetic grace with sheer, fluid, ultra-light pieces designed to move – the 3 Stripes in Motion. Presented during Paris Men’s Fashion Week at the Lycée Carnot on Sunday, June 28, 2015, the collection signifies a return to the graphic simplicity of both Yamamoto’s work and adidas’ three-stripe motif. Heightening the theme, men’s and women’s pieces debuted side by side against the backdrop of an avant-garde performance by “TAO Dance Theater” and choreography by Tao Ye", a fearless gesture of modern movement. The collection originated in a series of sketches that Yamamoto imagined with rapid-fire creativity. The drawings yield the clothing itself, but also serve as decoration when printed as artwork across a range of apparel from tanks to T-shirts. Further inspired, Yamamoto created four self-portraits of himself in motion that are also used as graphic treatment. For the designer, the topic of movement is most clearly encapsulated in a series of stunning ponchos in three distinct silhouettes, two of which are emblazoned with his sketches. The poncho is undoubtedly the star of the collection, arriving in 3 distinct styles. The first in a classic black, ultra-light, rain-proof nylon with custom white Yamamoto artwork, the second in a light air mesh fabric featuring a voluminous silhouette that can be converted and customized; and the third a bonded, two-layer poncho. Elsewhere in the collection, Yamamoto’s iconic inspiration is seen in men’s and women’s apparel bearing four characteristics: fluidity, color, print, and light. The range shows simplicity of form with easy, fluid, ergonomic lines—breezy sportswear designed to ride the wind. Bright pops of electric blue for men and candy red for women enhance a classic Y-3 color palette of black and white. Abstract prints create a study in motion, emphasizing the elegant fluidity of the clothes. And Y-3 continues its forward strides in ultra-light design with air meshes and delicate jerseys that conjure a sense of easy elegance and couture comfort. Light also served as a literal inspiration for a pack of clothes printed with Yamamoto’s signature quotes spelled out in neon light. Footwear, meanwhile, further builds on two established icons: the adidas Boost and the Qasa. The Boost pairs adidas’ breakthrough performance cushioning with bold new upper designs, while the unmistakable Qasa profile evolves into cool summer sandals in a range of colors and materials for men and women. Also new this season is the Kyujo footwear style—a silhouette that features an inner “booty” comprised of technical knit fabrics that is overlaid with panels of leather wrapping around the foot. Offered in both a mid and low cut, the Kyujo debuts in a black and white graphic combination along side iterations in both seasonal prints and colour-ways. Further, this directional new shoe is detailed with a lightweight outsole, providing the wearer with superior comfort and stability. The show had notable attendance from Asian- American model Soo Joo Park, and adidas’ own athlete Damian Lillard from the Portland Trailblazers. As a first, Y-3 will make two key styles from the Spring/Summer 2016 collection available for pre-order on Y-3.com, starting Monday, June 29th at 12pm CET. This exciting option will allow Y-3 fans worldwide the opportunity to be among the first to receive both items, only weeks after debuting during the Y-3 Spring/Summer 2016 runway presentation. This exclusive pre-order selection includes the brand new all white Qasa High sneaker and the black funnel-necked Shacho’s poncho, featuring the Yamamoto artwork on the back. Pre order is available for one week only, with items arriving to customers by the end of July 2016, long before the remaining collection arrives in stores for the new season. Since its launch in 2003, Y-3 has remained fascinated by movement, pioneering a futuristic sport-style that at its very essence enables the body to move—faster, stronger, more elegant. Inspired by Yamamoto’s desire for a brave new energy, Y-3 revisits this central idea as the core message of the season – the 3 Stripes in Motion. “It’s time to move,” says Yamamoto. “This is life’s only constant, and I was enchanted by the beauty and simplicity of the body in motion. This was my only inspiration.” Be sure to watch the full TAO Dance Theater version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzLAmLwvyP8 SHARE AND FOLLOW THE STORY #adidas #Y3 #PFW http://www.Y-3.com

Yohji Yamamoto pour homme A/W18-19 Show Footage - Official version

17:09
Yohji used to say that Menswear was limited compared to Womenswear. Limited in terms of the variety of clothing you can wear. Consequently, Yohji paid more attention to the little details… But times have changed and seeing so many dresses and skirts in a mens collection has become almost trendy. The distinction between the genders seems all the more ambiguous today. Not from a gender view point, but rather from a styling view point. But above all, for Yohji, Menswear is mostly about a state of mind, a way of Life. Since the collaboration with Yasuto Sasada in the A/W14-15 collection, Yohji has been establishing a whole new relation between Art and Fashion. A lot of his pieces in his recent collections feature some sort of graphical design, a pictorial motif, or even some words, carefully put on the garments by way of prints, bleachings, embroideries, patchworks, etc... It is a known fact that Yohji doesn’t use much color in his collections, especially because colors necessarily imply something, some sort of meaning, even a cultural connotation in some cases. The neutrality of his signature black is convenient for him as a canvas to embellish his clothing with his own artwork. “(…) Today’s show was another masterclass on the subject. It opened in black and in black it closed, coming across as a bit clerical and decidedly nonchalant. The shapes were particularly slouchy and the boots, as always, stompy. The Finale, with models marching slowly to John Lennon’s Imagine was touching: a poignant protest against our divisive times (…)” -Angelo Flaccavento for BOF
